KAECKER, Kenneth Andrew. Born August 10, 1911 in Rochelle, IL, died Monday, March 10, 1997 in Tucson. Preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Minnie Kaecker and son, Ronald. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Golden Mary Kaecker; sons, Robert (Pat) Kaecker of Chino Valley, AZ, David Kaecker of Phoenix; nephew, Warren (Judy) Finn of Tulsa, OK; stepchildren, Priscilla Metropoulos of Tucson, Bob Calhoun of Tucson, Loren (Adrianna) Calhoun of Tahlequah, OK; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. On May 24, 1951 Ken and Golden were married in Ft. Worth, TX and honeymooned in Cuba. In Illinois Ken farmed extensively, raised cattle and Registered Quarter Horses, which the family showed in the Midwest. Being an excellent judge of cattle and horses he judged many shows. In 1954 Ken and Golden moved to Scottsdale and the next three years were spent looking for a ranch. In January 1957 they purchased the Tanque Verde Cattle Ranch on Reddington Road. They worked on the ranch until 1993 when due to his health he retired. He has been a member of the 49er’s Country Club since 1964 and has many golfing friends there. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A special thank you to the St. Joseph’s Hospice for their excellent care and consideration for his family. KNUTZEN, Leslie Kennedy, 39, of Tucson, passed away Sunday, March 9, 1997. Survived by her husband, Peter M. Knutzen; parents, James Harold and Doris Kennedy; brothers, James S. and Kevin B. Kennedy, all of Tucson; her uncle, Lloyd (Pat) Kennedy of Arkansas; her beloved Cocker Spaniel, Buffy. Other survivors include her husband Peter’s parents, Walter M. 'Bill' and Ruth Knutzen; Peter’s brother, Mark (Roxann) and Peter’s sisters, Karina, Lori (Michael) Cooper and five nephews and one niece. Leslie was born January 13, 1958 in Patchoque, Long Island, NY and moved to Tucson with her family as a young woman. She was graduated from Sabino High School and the University of Arizona where she received her BSN Nursing Degree. Leslie was employed in the medical community in Tucson, Head Start in Santa Fe, NM and at the time of her death, worked for the Department of Economic Security in Tucson. Services will be held Thursday, March 13 at 11:00 a.m. at East Lawn Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Tucson.
LACKEY, Esther P., 76, of Tucson, AZ, passed away March 9, 1997 from cancer. Longtime resident of Waterbury, CT., she moved to Tucson in 1972. Her great laughter and good humor will be missed by all who knew her. LEONARDO, James, died March 8, 1997 in Tucson. Services will be held at St. Odelia Catholic Church at 9:00 a.m., March 12, with interment at Holy Hope Cemetery. Mr. Leonardo was born October 16, 1914 in Savanna, IL, and attended Cornell College and Cedar Rapids Business College. He was employed by the Des Moines, Iowa Post Office from 1938 until his retirement in 1981, except for two years of WWII military service with the Persian Gulf Command. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Wilma Leonardo; his sister, Angeline Richardson of Joliet, IL; sons, James S. (Peggy) of Des Moines and John S. of Tucson; daughters, Catherine Leonardo of New York City and Nancy (Michael) Leonardo-Santos of Tucson and Patricia Leonardo of Tucson; as well as grandchildren, Nathan, Marian, Sam, Emily, James, Sean, and Austin. Mr. Leonardo was a loving, generous, and jovial man who enjoyed people and had an unmatchable zest for life. He will be truly missed. Memorial donations may be made to Casa De Los Ninos.

MEINES, Clarence Simon, 78, born in Ireton, Iowa on January 7, 1919, died Monday, March 10, 1997 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Violet; daughters, Karen Heiser, Marilyn Halloran and Jayne (Bob) Wyllie; sisters, Alice Dangermond, Emma Dayton; brother, Paul (Joy) Meines and eight grandchildren. Mr. Meines retired from the US Air Force in 1962 after 22 years of service, and after 19 years with the City of Tucson, Traffic Dept. here tired again in 1982. NELSON, Irl D., 70, died March 9, 1997. He was born in Lebanon, South Dakota in 1927. He spent much of his career in Chile as a mining engineer for Anaconda, retiring from ARCO in 1984. Irl is survived by his wife, Billie; daughters, Leslie (Don) Taullie of Arvada, CO, Karen (Gary) Endorf; and grandchildren, Laura, Erin and Ryan of Bartlesville, OK, and Julia Nelson, Major, USAF of Tucson. O’BRIEN, Michael H., 57, of Tucson, AZ, passed away March 8, 1997. Mr. O’Brien was a respected business leader in Tucson for the last 19 years as owner/operator of several east side service stations. He was a member of the Service Station Dealers of Arizona Association. He had been an extremely active member of the Sabino Canyon Little League program for a decade, organizing and hosting the State Tournament in 1989. He was a consultant to the Roosevelt Lake Task Force for two years, representing the water skiing interest. In the past three years, he had been heavily involved as a nationally rated timer, and judge for both slalom and jump. He was in the process of working on his driving rating also for the American Water Ski Association. His two sons water ski competitively. He assisted in the organization and development toward a stronger, more involved Arizona faction of the AWSA. Though not personally a skier, he worked as hard as anybody whether at the lake or at tournament. He is survived by his wife, Jan Linton O’Brien and sons, Patrick and Jack; his mother, Antoinette Mackler; sister, Sheila Wallaceall of Tucson and half brother, John Mackler of Baton Rouge, LA. He was predeceased by his brother, Dennis J. O’Brien. Memorial services will be held at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. RUTHERFORD, Lona B., age 92, passed away March 11, 1997 in Tucson. Born June 5, 1904 in Grafton, West Virginia. Mrs.Rutherford was a resident of Tucson for over 50 years. The last six years she was cared for in Florida. She was brought back to Tucson by her grandson. ANDERSON, Walter Ray, 64, died March 6, 1997. He was born in San Diego, CA., attended Hermiston High School in Oregon, Long Beach College in CA., and served in the U.S. Navy from 1949-1953, veteran of the Korean War. He married Nancy Kummer in 1973. Survived by seven children, Dan, Linda, Sharon, Michael, Steven, Theri, Thomas and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Gray Barker; father, Roy Lee Anderson, Sr.; brothers, Roy Anderson and Leslie Bearrow. Survived by brothers, R. Stanley Bearrow, Kenneth Barker and Jack Barker. He lived in Irvine, CA until 1992 when he moved to Tucson. He was in Aerospace Manufacturing. BAKER, Jane H., of Tucson was born March 26, 1920 in Amsterdam, NY and died March 3, 1997. Survived by her husband Ellsworth A. and sons Larry M. (Merle) Baker and John S. Baker and granddaughter Jennifer Baker. Jane gradated from Syracuse University and taught art for three years in Scocia, N.Y. She married Ellsworth Baker on June 26, 1942, and began a life as an Army Officer’s wife traveling throughout the United States and around the world. During the Korean War they were stationed at Misawa, on the northern tip of Japan. Aircraft carrying wounded personnel would arrive from Korea every other night and Jane was one of the Red Cross Volunteers who helped care for the wounded. While stationed in France she worked as a Red Cross Volunteer in the hospital as well as managing the Thrift Shops. At DMAFB in Tucson she was chairman of the Red Cross Volunteers for three years as well as chairman of the DMAFB Thrift Shop. In Tucson Helen Claig and Jane started the first Blind Center. Cele Peterson donated the hose. Jane owned her own Braille machine and did Braille for the blind. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church and a member of their Craft Guild where she made stuffed toys for the University Medical Center.
