She leaves behind her husband, Joyotpaul (Joy); sons, Joydev (Paul) and Jonodev (Jon); nephew, Lance and sister, Richinda, as well as many other relatives and a wide circle of friends. She was a full blood Muscogee-Creek Indian who was born in rural Oklahoma of the Bear Clan lineage on her mother’s side and Bird Clan on her father’s side. She was always deeply involved in community service, first in Creek communities with her parents, then in Oklahoma City, Portage County, Ohio, Vermilion, SD, New Haven, CT, Tallahassee, FL, Tucson, AZ, Las Cruces, NM and the Phoenix metropolitan area. The areas of her commitment were many: health care, education, employment, alcoholism, corrections, cultural preservation, the environment, writing, storytelling, counseling, and above all, advocacy on behalf of many disadvantage groups, including Native Americans. Jean was often embarrassed by recognition because she believed in action more than words. Nevertheless she received many honors, among them the Jefferson Award in 1977 for public service in Tucson, and then the national Jefferson Medal at a ceremony at the United States Supreme Court. Most recently she was involved with the Old Phoenix Indian School property to try to retain the memory of Indian history and sacrifice.
