YOUNG, David Lemuel, 96, of Tucson, passed away February 9, 1997. He was born November 24, 1900 in Prescott, AK to James Calhoun and Fannie Haughton Young. Ancestors on both sides of the family were early day settlers in America, from having fought in the American Revolution. One uncle on his fathers side of the family fought with the Confederacy during the Civil War. Dave moved to Tucson in 1928 from Morenci where he had been working in the Phelps Dodge Company Store. After moving to Tucson Dave enrolled in the University of Arizona and attended for one semester. During that time he landed a job in Steinfeld’s Grocery Store where he worked until 1933. During this time he established a homestead near Rattlesnake Pass, where he lived in an adobe and cactus-rib shack near the site of the present day White Stallion Ranch. In 1934, on a shoestring, Dave opened the Young Wholesale Candy Co. After several years of slow growth, his trucks were supplying stores from Bowie to Gila Bend and from the Bisbee area to Casa Grande. He finally sold the candy business in 1948. Dave married Helen Tanksley Meleen in 1941. After the sale of the candy business, Dave and Helen (better known as 'Honey' or the 'Dutchess') spent five years of extensive travel in Mexico, Canada and the US, including the newly opened Al-Can Highway of Alaska. In 1952, the Youngs opened the Three Flags Indian Trading Post in the high sierras of California at Walker. They summered in California and spent the winters in Tucson and on various trips to purchase indian goods for the store. In 1966, they sold the store in Walker and retired to their 'Paradise Acre' home on Blacklidge Drive here in Tucson. After years of retirement, travel and golf, Dave became restless and opened a wholesale Navajo rug distributing business from his home. He continued to sell Indian rugs until 1992 when his health forced him to sell out. He always loved meeting the new friends that he made when folks would visit his home to purchase a beautiful Navajo weaving. He shared his life’s adventures with all who wished to listen and would also entertain them with his original poetry. 'Desert' Dave is survived by several great-nieces and nephews and will be missed by friends and family whose lives he has touched and blessed. Graveside Service, 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 11, 1997 at T.M.P. East Lawn. Memorial contributions may be made to Dignita Hospice of Tucson or the Tucson Community Food Bank. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.
