BUGAJSKI, Eleanor Mae, beloved mother of Bruce and Dennis; 'like a mother' to Bruce’s wife; and aunt of Bonnie, died peacefully at home on April 23, 1997 in the early evening hours. She courageously battled cancer for almost a year. Her loving sister, Alice, died of cancer just a few months earlier.
Eleanor was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 15, 1926. She lived there for many years until she relocated to Tucson to be close to her family.
She loved the beauty of the southwest, which she expressed in her many works of art. She will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched.

BURNHAM, John F., a resident of Tucson since 1956, passed away on March 21, one week after his ninety-third birthday. Mr. Burnham was born on a Wisconsin dairy farm, the youngest of four children of David and Mita Burnham. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1926 with a major in Journalism. After graduation, he worked in various newspapers around the state of Wisconsin, including the weekly Waupaca County Post owned and operated by his father.
In 1944, Mr. Burnham left Wisconsin for North Dakota to take a position as a staff writer on the Fargo Forum. He left the paper in October 1947 to become Executive Secretary of the North Dakota Dairy Association. He moved on in 1949 to become Experimental Station editor of the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo.
John and his wife, Margiemae, left the climes of North Dakota for Tucson when he was offered the position of Agriculture Editor for the University of Arizona. He retired from this position at the mandatory age of 70 in 1974.
Not happy with the idle life, after six weeks he prevailed on the Dean of Agriculture to create a position for him as Extension Specialist on Aging, a subject in which he now considered himself an expert.
Burnham’s work here included membership on the Governor’s Council on Aging and writing a weekly column 'Common Sense for Seniors' which went to newspaper and radio outlets and senior citizen agencies throughout Arizona and half a dozen other states. He served two years as president of the Arizona Council for Senior Citizens and in 1979 Governor Bruce Babbitt, named John J. Burnham as Arizona’s 'Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year.' He was also a long time member of the State Pharmacy Board, a Mason, a member of Sigma Delta Chi as well as several other civic and professional organizations. John Burnham was predeceased by his wife in 1979, survived by his long time companion Sabin Jones of Tucson, a sister, the Baroness Henrietta von Meyendorff-Phalen of Washington D.C., two daughters Dr. Barbara B. Rider, Ph.D. of Kalamazoo and Sarah Mr. Burnham R.N. of Napa, California, a son Donald L. of New Orleans and five granddaughters.
CASTANEDA, Jose G., 87, of Marana, passed away, April 25, 1997. Preceded in death by wife, Josefa E. Castaneda; daughter, Dolores Gastelum; daughter-in-law, Connie Castaneda. Mr. Cawelti (April 1903 – October 1, 1992) and Mrs. Cawelti (September 1902 – April 12, 1997). Arizona residents since 1972, formerly from Winnetka, IL. Both are missed dearly by their family and many friends. They dedicated their lives to each other and teaching – teaching all those who knew them the true meaning of love, friendship, and living life to its fullest. Died at Life Care Center on April 25, 1997 after six years of residency. Survived by loving husband; daughter, Ellen Marie Lutzow (James); sons, John Charles (Michele), Edward Ernest (Danita), Peter John (Carla); grandchildren, Sara-Elizabeth, Carol, Ned, Lauren, Stephen and Ciara Heller and Stacey and Blake Huber; a niece, Sandra Plant of Barbados; numerous cousins in U.S., Canada and Barbados. HENDERSON, Scott A., born in Tucson, June 27, 1942 died after a brief illness at Long Beach, California Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Michele; his children, Megan of Tempe and Michael of Huntington Beach; his stepchildren, Rachel, Benjamin and Jason Knight of Huntington Beach; his mother, Rosemary Franco Henderson of Tucson; his sisters, Carol Linda Evans of Natick, MA and Roda Nordin of Tucson; his former wife, Lisa Nibarger of California. He was the beloved uncle of Tammy, Darin and Melissa; and great-uncle of Kaila; and beloved nephew of Harold and Isabel Franco; great-nephew of Ramona 'Chocha' Franco and Guadalupe 'Ruby' Rau; and cousin of Charley and Lucy Rau. He will be missed by numerous other relations and friends. He is preceded in death by his brother Michael Henderson; his father, David Scott Henderson; and his grandparents, Albert S. and Maria B. Franco. Services will be held in Long Beach, California, on April 25. In Tucson a graveside service will be held at Holy Hope Cemetery on Monday, April 28, 1997 at 11:30 a.m. A Memorial Mass will be announced later as will a family request for donations to a scholarship fund to be established in Scott’s name. HIGUERA, Wencie, 77, of Tucson, passed away April 19, 1997. A loving father, grandfather and friend, was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen. Survivors include his children, Kurt (Donna) Higuera, Paula (Mack) Brown, Carole (Michael) Fisher; grandchildren, Erica, Benjamen, Daniel, Austin, Carly, Breann, Sam and Joe; sister, Armida; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Higuera left behind a legacy of goodwill and rich family history for his survivors and his community of Tucson. A native Tucsonan, Mr. Higuera devoted 25 years of his career to the Tucson Fire Department and retired as Captain in 1973. He later spent 10 years with the Pima County Assessor’s Office before his final retirement. Mr. Higuera served in the U.S. Army as Sergeant during WWII. Sergeant Higuera’s company was one of the first to assist with the liberation of Ohrdruf concentration camp in Germany during 1944 and 1945. Memorial Services will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 1145 E. Ft. Lowell Rd., Monday, April 28, 1997 at 11:00 a.m., with reception to follow at the Hellenic Center. JORDAN, Betty, of Tucson, AZ, died April 24, 1997. Born in Saginaw, MI on March 14, 1921. Survived by sons, Gerald (Maryann), Michael (Sue); and daughter, Sue (Dick) Tillis; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Betty graduated from Saginaw General School of Nursing and was married to the late Peter Jordan. She moved to Tucson in 1955 and worked in the Sunnyside School District as a nurse from 1966 until 1987. There will be a Memorial Mass 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 1997 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 7651 E. Pima.
