Frank J. Peters, In loving memory of Frank J. Peters, a dedicated husband and a devoted father. He went to be with the Lord on July 4, 1997, Friday. He is survived by wife, Nora; children, David (Jan) Peters, Margaret (Glenn) Gutierrez, Daniel (Christina) Peters, Richard (Una) Peters, and Joseph Peters all of Tucson; sister, Rosemarie Petrus; parents, John and Roselee Peters; grandchildren, Melanie, Anthony, Christine, Michael and Michaela; step grandchildren; Valerie, Madeline and Nicole; great-granddaughter, Ashley. Mass for Mr. Peters will be said at 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 7, 1997 at Our Mother of Sorrows, 1800 S. Kolb with Military Honors at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 8, 1997 at Our Lady of the Desert, 2151 S. SCHUMANN, Charles B., 64, of Tucson, died July 2, 1997 as a result of an auto accident in Albuquerque, NM. Survived by his wife of 42 years, Lillie R. Schumann; daughters, Pamela Fabian of Grantsburg, WI, Nona Tuson of Puyallup, WA; son Michael Schumann of St. Paul, MN; 100-year-old mother, Stella Schumann of St. Paul, MN; sisters, Delores Bonniwell, Luella Musta; and brothers, Howard Schumann, of St. Paul, MN, Gerald Schumann of Rush City, MN; six grandchildren; one great- granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. SHURTZ, Mabel Elaine Holdsworth, of Las Vegas and Tucson, born August 7, 1909, went to meet her Lord on July 4, 1997. She was greeted by her husband, Carl; her daughter, Jeanette Shay; her grandsons David Schofield and Carl M. Shurtz; her brother, Glenn Holdsworth; and her parents. She is survived by her son, Carl M. (Phyllis) Shurtz; daughters, Frances (Jack) Stewart; and Carol Foggiano; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Ted (Gerri) Holdsworth, and Charles (Edith) Holdsworth; sister, Violet Gephart; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was born in Conesville, OH and moved to Tucson in 1944. She and her husband owned and operated Columbia Building Materials for many years. Private family services will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at East Lawn Mausoleum. Pastor Phil Conrad from Ohio will officiate. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to Nevada Lung Association or Nevada Arthritis Foundation.

SMITH, Harold L., born February 27, 1926, died July 5, 1997 at the age of 71 by breaking the hold that Alzheimer’s and Cancer had on him. He was born and raised in southern Michigan. At the age of 17, he joined the Naval Armed Guard and served 34 months in the South Pacific during WWII. He completed his education and married (Alice) Miriam Whitelock in 1946. They made their home in Flint, MI, where they raised their four children. Mr. Smith was in the investigation and security business, first for insurance companies, then for himself. He and his wife opened their agency in 1957, which they sold to their son in 1979. During these years, Mr. Smith was a volunteer Disaster Coordinator for the American Red Cross. He was an avid sportsman, especially enjoying golf and hunting. Mr. Smith retired in 1979, he and his wife moved to Tucson, AZ, in 1981, where he continued to enjoy golf and developed the special interest of exploring mountain trails and ghost towns. He invited many to go with him on the back trails, and he always served a tailgate lunch that was remembered. He was also known for his Wild Game Feasts in both MI and AZ. In addition to Professional Organizations in MI, Mr. Smith was a member of BPOE, Rotary International, Breakfast Optimists, the Bear Hunters Association, and the Flint Golf Club. In AZ, he was a member of Santa Rita Golf Club, a life member of the American Legion Post #109, and was so pleased to be an Honorary Member of the Active 20-30 Club. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Miriam; son, Steven H. Smith (Pam) of MI; daughters, Susan S. Smith of CO, Joanne (Michael) Spagel of CA, Christine A. Smith of Tucson; grandchildren Brooke (Michael) Pachuta and Ryan H. Smith both of MI, Jordan Kasper, CA, Wesley Spagle, CA, Gabriel Spagle and Charlene Spagle both of AZ; brother Gene Smith, MI, and many nieces and nephews. Respecting Mr. Smith’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Family and friends are invited to join Celebration of his life, at the residence, 8760 East Desert Spring Street, Tucson, Wednesday, July 7, 1997 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Respite Care Fund, Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging, 2221 North Rosemont, Tucson, AZ 85712, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Southern Arizona Chapter, P.O. Box 13423, Tucson, 85732-3423. Cremation will be followed by distributing his ashes in his beloved Santa Rita Mountains. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

TAPIA, Celia, 73, of Tucson, passed away July 3, 1997. Survived by husband, Santiago M. Tapia; daughter, Gloria Hobbs; sons, Joe Tapia, Santiago Tapia Jr.; sisters, Mary Pitts, Belia Amador, Lucia Armenta. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 1997 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, (Center Chapel), 240 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered at 9:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral. Interment to follow at Valley View Cemetery in Mammoth, AZ. FERRARI, Alice Theresa, age 61, of Tucson, died July 3, 1997. Survived by husband, Vincent Ferrari; son, Gary Ferrari of Dekalb, IL; three daughters, Theresa Walen (Terry) and Mary Ferrari of Brookfield, IL and Sharon Ferrari of Tucson; four brothers, Gene, Dick, Tom, and Ronnie Lancour; four sisters, Rita Gosse, Cook Haessely, Osa Herreid, and Maryann Nordstrom; and seven grandchildren. LEON, Frank R., 69, of Tucson, passed away June 30, 1997. Brother of the late Jesus D. Leon, Arthur Leon, and Genaro Leon. Survived by son, Roy Leon (Cookie); brother, Joe Leon; sister, Teresa Norton of California. Also survived by beloved nieces, Diane and Christie, also of CA and numerous nieces and nephews; also long time companion, Cruz Gutierrez; grandchildren, Amanda, Michael Leon and god-daughter, Melissa Salazar. Also survived by cousins, Rosa Contreras, Anita Enriquez, and Mrs. B. Jenson. He was employed by Aircraft Industries. Also a veteran of Army Aircorp. He also managed Frank and Bambi’s Baseball Team. Roberto H. 'Bob' Lizardi, 69, of Tucson, died July 1, 1997. Survived by wife of 47 years, Adela Lizardi; son, Robert Lizardi; daughter, Inez (Paul) Linares; two grandchildren and one great-grandson; and nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by a granddaughter. Mr. Lizardi retired after 28 years in the U.S. Army and 15 years in Civil Service. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, with Vigil Service at 4:30 p.m., followed by Knights of Columbus Chalice Service at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 7 at St. Cyril’s Church, 4725 E. Pima. Burial with full military honors will follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery.

Robert Eric Turner, 23, of Tucson, born January 30, 1974.Survived by Samuel E. and Phyllis J. Turner. Born in our master bedroom, died in his bedroom, July 2, 1997. Rob is survived by siblings Julie Ann, Amy Lyn and Kathryn Zenizo and daughter Jessica Louise, Joseph Samuel Turner and wife Cindee, and many wonderful friends whose lives he touched. Rob freely gave joy, happiness and humor to all who knew him. Memorial services will be held at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church (Swan and River Rd.) July 6 at 4:00 p.m. Friends of his family are welcome to share in the Celebration of his Life. In lieu of flowers, donations accepted to St. Francis in the Foothills.

Cleve H. White, 69, of Tucson, passed away July 2, 1997. Survived by wife, Helen; daughters, Mary Groom, Patricia Manns, Rita Hernandez and Brenda Vildusea, all of Tucson; eight sisters and five brothers; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. YANEZ, Alfonso L., age 74, of Tucson, died July 2, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Emma; daughters, Carmen (Tony) Sanchez and Frances (John) Cavanaugh; son, Al (Silvia) Yanez; granddaughters, Natalie, Danialle, Brianna and Sara; also survived by sisters, Cruz (Frank) Dancil, Sally (Pete) Salas; and brothers, Daniel (Julia) Yanez and Joe (Emily) Yanez. Preceded in death by mother and father, Carmen and Medardo; and by sisters, Jean and Beatrice. Also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews. DEITEL, Rose, 81, of Tucson, died July 2, 1997. FLOREZ, Avesline K., 73, of Tucson, died June 30, 1997. He was preceded in death by his sons, Abbie and Eddie Florez. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; sisters, Marie Flores of Tucson and Rita Lozano of Albuquerque, NM; and brother, Frank Sandoval of Dexter, NM. Services are private. JUDGE, Stephanie, 25, passed away June 30, 1997. Survived by husband, Tim Judge, Jr., and children Timothy, 3, and Sarah, 2; daughter of Linda and Raymond Ellis of Playas, NM; sister Tammy Ellis; grandfather Charles Ellis, and many family members and friends. Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 5 at EASTLAWN Mortuary Chapel.

KUNKEL, Hope L., 93, of Tucson, died at Manor Care Springhouse of Tucson, on 25 June, 1997. Hope was a resident of Tucson since 1954 and a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Gerald M. Kunkel and two grandchildren, Michael and Steven White. Hope is survived by her daughter, JoAnne K. White of Ashland, OR; and her son, John B. Kunkel of Tucson; and by grandchildren, Janet White, Karen Chico and Susan Kriefels and three great-grandchildren, Allison and Brent Chico and Donna Kriefels. As was her wish she was cremated. Memorial Services will be held in the Chapel at First United Methodist Church of Tucson on 4 July at 3:00 p.m. Reception to follow the service.

LOTT, Gregory Thomas, born May 12, 1997, died June 16, 1997.

Glover, formerly of Harrisburg, PA; great-grandmother, Mrs. Gladys Bragg, formerly of Lonoke, AR and great-grandmother, Mrs. Esther Pool, formerly of Lonoke, AR.
