GRAY, Edwin B. 'Eddie', age 83, went home to be with our father in heaven June 25, 1997. He retired from ASARCO’s Ball Mill Mission Plan in 1979. He was born March 28, 1914 in Capitan, NM. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; his father, Walter and his brother, Irving. He was a surviving WWII Veteran. He is survived by his loving wife, Edna and their baby, Kiko; one sister-in-law, Hazel Eckeburger, Garland, TX, Don and Bonnie Thompson, Odessa, TX and many nieces and nephews. His very special family, Martin Bonnie, Marlene, Maxine, Martin II, Moriah and Mia Diamante of Tucson, AZ, stood by Edwin and Edna during the last three years of their courageous battle with Alzheimer's. ROADS, Donald S., 67, of Robinson, IL, died June 22, 1997. He graduated from Tucson High School in 1947 and earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Xavier University in Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a retired Systems Accountant for the Federal Government in Washington D.C. He was on the Board of the American Heart Association, a member of American Legion Post #69 and a visiting member of the Mended Hearts group. He is survived by his wife, Jayne of Robinson, IL; his children, Bridget Roads, John Roads, Sarah Roads (Jeff Goldstein) and Christopher Roads (Lee Ann) and eight grandchildren, all of Tucson, AZ. He is also survived by his brother, John H. Roads (Hank) of Tucson and his sister, Susie Coyle (Terry) of Phoenix and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann Owens. No Funeral Services are planned. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the American Heart Association.
SHELTON, Beverly Richey, of Tucson, died Sunday, June 22, 1997. She is survived by her children, Julie Vargas and Nathan Shelton; Julie’s husband Henry Vargas and Nathan’s fiancee, Laura Neely; granddaughter, Riley Vargas; and cousin, Doris Lust of Tooele, UT; Laura’s children, Solita, Javier, Laura and Rafael DeZubiria. Bev was born December 20, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the only child of Martha Braithwaite Richey and William Richey. The family lived in Tooele, where Bev grew up and graduated from Tooele High School in 1949. She worked at Dugway Proving Grounds and later at the Utah State Employment Office. Bev earned a BA in psychology, graduating with honors from the University of Utah, 1954. Bev married Ralph L. Shelton, October, 1955. They moved to Kansas City, Kansas, in 1959, where she raised the children and ran the the household. The family camped often with friends and canoed the Current River in Missouri. Bev studied counseling at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.After the family moved to Tucson in 1970, Bev received her M.A. in 1971. In the 1970's, Bev worked at West Center, specializing in counseling for alcoholism. She also became active in Alcoholics Anonymous and sponsored many new members. Bev divorced in 1983. Through the 1980's, Bev worked at the University of Arizona 4-H office, the Agriculture Communications Dept., and others. In addition to staying active with AA and the Alano Club, she also led therapy groups for Parents Anonymous. Bev retired in 1990. She began to stay home more, where she could enjoy the view of her yard and the many birds. She also enjoyed the companionship of her friend Ed Fahy and his excellent cooking. Eleanor Nell Nelson, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 1997 at Tucson Medical Center. She was 79 years of age. Eleanor Nelson was born September 13, 1917 in Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. She came to Tucson in 1952. Mrs. Nelson was a long time employee of the Tucson Medical Center Dietary Department, where she retired from after 16 years of service. She was also a 45-year member of the Catalina United Methodist Church and a long time member of the Homebuilders and Rebeccas. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Thomas H. Nelson. Mrs. Nelson is survived by daughters, Betsy Bykerk, Nancy Grubb and three daughters in North Carolina; 18 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Local Memorial Services will take place from the Catalina United Methodist Memorial Chapel, 2700 E. Speedway, on Sunday, June 29, 1997 at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Hal Cowart to officiate. ZAVALA, Michael Olvera, 51, of Tucson, passed away at his residence on June 23, 1997. Mr. Zavala was born in Banning, CA on May 8, 1946 to Michaela and Santiago Zavala. During high school, Mike was an AFS exchange student to Belgium. After graduating high school he moved on to attend Stanford University, then the University of Arizona Law School. He became a private practice lawyer in Tucson where he served as the attorney for the Mexican-Americans in the desegregation lawsuit against theTucson Unified School District. He loved his children and was active in many youth sports activities to include coaching soccer, softball and baseball. He also played and coached on his adult softball team, the Yankees, for many years. Mr. Zavala is preceded in death by his parents, Santiago and Michaela Zavala; his brothers, Felix Zavala and Lorenzo Casarez. Surviving are his children, Mercedez and Andrew; sisters, Cecilia Garcia, Rosa Pena and Ysaura Cuen; one brother, John Valdivia; and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, June 27, 1997 in Banning, CA from the Precious Blood Catholic Church, with interment to follow in San Gorgonio Memorial Park.
