VALLE, Erasmo ”Shorty”, of Tucson, AZ, was born in Harlingen, TX on November 25, 1929. Passed away Saturday, September 20, 1997 at home with all his loved ones, family and friends. He resided in Marana, AZ since 1952, working at various farms including Eloy. When he retired in 1989, he moved to Tucson to be with his family. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Juana Paula Castillo Valle; daughter, Yolanda (Richard) Morales; stepsons, Steve (Carmen) Armadillo, Felipe S. Molina (Herminia); six grandchildren, Dena and Ricardo M. Morales, Crystal, Steven, Elizabeth and Adam Armadillo; also his brothers, Manuel, Rubio, Juan and Julian; and many more family and friends. CHAPUT, Jane Lowman, died August 21, 1997 after a lengthy illness. She was born April 26, 1921 in Elmira, NY, but grew up in Philadelphia. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Paul; daughters, Laurel of Dallas and Linda of San Francisco; son, Paul and his wife Cathy of Littleton, Colorado. She also leaves three cherished grandchildren, Christina, Benjamin and Matthew. Jane was a resident of Tucson for more than 14 years. She was an Honors graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. She was an active member of Chi Omega Sorority for many years and shared many duties and activities of the Junior League in the several cities to which her husband’s business assignments took the family including Philadelphia, Boston, Calgary, Midland, Texas, Kansas City, Houston and San Antonio. She had a life-long devotion to the Episcopal Church and taught Bethel Bible classes for more than three years. Currently she was a member of St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church. She was also a member of the Tucson County Club. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4400 N. Campbell (at River), on Saturday, September 27, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will be in the Memorial Gardens at the Church. Following the Memorial Service, there will be a reception at the Tucson County Club at 12:00 noon. Joy Cloud Cortner, 73, born February 5, 1924 in Tucson, Arizona, died in her sleep this Thursday evening, September 18, 1997 in Moss Beach, California, with her daughter, Lisa Joy Francis in attendance. Having long-suffered from lung disease, she had recently moved for her health to an auxiliary home on the sea coast near her daughter who is a health care worker. She was preceded in death by her son, Wilson Weaver ”Buddy” Waggoner. She is survived by her husband, Dr. John Wright Cortner of Tucson, AZ; her two daughters, Deborah Cloud Waggoner of Albuquerque, NM; and Lisa Joy Francis; her granddaughter, Melissa Francis of Concord, CA; and her stepdaughters, Sandra Cortner Payne and Kathleen Cortner, and Kathleen’s son, John Cortner. Joy Cortner was born Thelma Joy Cloud to Russell E. and Eva Cloud at the Old Stork’s Nest in downtown Tucson. Before she was born, her parents had moved from Oklahoma to Tucson after her father had contracted Tuberculosis. Her mother worked at the Pima County Courthouse and her father was first a trolley car conductor, then real estate broker, homesteading several hundred acres along the Catalina Mountains. Joy Cloud was a popular and well-loved girl, graduating from Tucson High School, having been an honor student and both Rodeo and Homecoming Queens. She attended the U of A as an Alpha Phi. Her mother, she, and her first husband built and operated the Saddleback Guest Ranch, located on their land near Sabino High School and the Raven Golf Course, north of Cloud Rd., named for her father. She lived her entire life in Tucson, the last 35 years with her husband, Dr. Wright Cortner. There will be a Sunrise Service on Thursday, September 25, 1997 and a Memorial for all friends of Joy and Wright at noon at the Tucson Country Club. John Barry Borden died peacefully on September 17, 1997, from complications of a stroke. Born to Nathaniel and Thelma Wilkinson Borden, November 30, 1933 in Fall River, MA.Survived by sons, Christopher T. of Tucson, J. Paul of San Diego, CA; and daughter, Marne E. (Robert) Meeker of Tucson. Also survived by sister, Beverly A. (Robert) Blaney of Torrance, CA; sister-in-law, Rosemarie Borden of Peirson, MI; five grandchildren. Also surviving are former wives, Terry G. Borden and Patti Borden, both of Tucson. Predeceased by brother Robert and son Keith Borden. J.B. was an avid ham radio operator (WA7AHF) and for a time, held a private pilots license. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his family as they were growing up. No services will be held.
CALENE, Raymond M., 96, of Tucson, died Friday, September 19, 1997. Born on October 26, 1900 in Sylvan Grove, Kansas, Raymond graduated from Kansas University in 1920. Throughout his life, he remained an active member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, having recently been notified that he was to be inducted into their Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the University of Arizona in November. Upon earning his degree from college, he returned to Sylvan Grove to manage the Calene Mercantile Co. Based on his retail experience, he joined the JC Penney Co. as a manager and established his family in Mansfield, Ohio where his career spanned 35 years. Being a prominent community leader, much of his time was spent giving service to the Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodges, Eastern Star, numerous war efforts, Chamber of Commerce, BPO Elks, and the YMCA. Following his retirement in 1960, he and his wife of 55 years, Lottie Fowler Calene, wintered in Tucson. Upon her death in 1983, he became a permanent resident. Survivors include his two daughters, Camilla (Charles) Griffin of Carpinteria, CA. and Charlotte Dean of Tucson; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. CHANDLER, Verlin Noah, born July 30, 1911 in Franklin, IN, died September 17, 1997 at his home in Tucson. Survived by wife, Inez Pauline Chandler (they were married September 30, 1932); son, Samuel (Donna); grandson, Jeffery (Lisa) and granddaughter, Colleen (fiance, Daniel Mueller). Mr. Chandler moved to Arizona at the age of four because of asthma. Mr. Chandler was employed as a mechanic at DMAFB and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
