Carol Jean Halpenny, RN, MA, Lt. Col. USAFR (Retired)
Jean was born in Tucson, Arizona on August 20, 1941 to Corky and Leonard Halpenny. She was educated in Tucson through grade school. In early 1955 she moved with her parents and brother, Philip, to Mocamedes, Angola, Africa, where they lived for 2 1/2 years. During this period, Jean learned the Portuguese language and carried on her first three years of high school under University of Nebraska correspondence courses. Upon her return from Africa in late 1957, Jean completed her final year of high school in Tucson. In the Summer of 1960, before she entered the University of Michigan School of Nursing, Jean joined her parents in Lahore, West Pakistan. After two years she withdrew from the University, explaining that she did not have enough confidence in her abilities to be a nurse. In 1963 Jean enrolled in the foreign specialist program at the University of Arizona. But, while at the University, she served as a candy-stripper volunteer St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson. Upon graduation in 1965 with her BA in History, she realized her true calling was nursing, and she returned to the Ann Arbor, Michigan campus and earned her BSN in 1967. Jean completed her MA, with a major in nursing and a minor in physiology and biophysics, at the University of Washington in 1975. In 1979 she was accepted into the predoctoral program in nursing science at the University of Washington, where she completed all coursework required for the PhD degree.
Jean’s professional career spanned both military and civilian nursing. Jean enrolled in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1966 and, in 1967, was accepted into the Officer Candidate School, U.S. Women’s Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island. She began her military nursing career at Naval Hospital, San Diego, in the extensive care unit, where she worked as a staff nurse for two years. In 1969 she was assigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital, Guam, Marianas Islands, where she served as charge nurse in military medical and newborn nursery. Jean moved to the Seattle area in 1971, continuing her military career in the Naval Reserve as a charge nurse, Naval Hospital, Whidbey Island. That reserve unit was disbanded in 1978, so Jean transferred to the U.S. Air Force Reserve at McChord AFB, where she served as flight nurse with the 40th Aeromedical Evacuation Unit for 11 years. After 23 years of distinguished military service, she retired in 1989 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Her civilian nursing career began in Seattle in 1971 when she began working at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital coronary care unit. In 1975 she accepted a faculty position in the Department of Physiological Nursing at the University of Washington School of Nursing, where she taught both undergraduate and graduate nursing students. It was during that time that she co-authored the textbook ”Cardiac Nursing” because there was no other text available to meet her students’ needs. That book is currently in it 3rd edition. In 1982 she began working for Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound, first at the Eastside Hospital’s intensive and coronary care units, and in 1990 at Eastside Home and Community Services. She continued in that capacity until her recent hospitalization. Jean also was an adjunct faculty member at Seattle Pacific University School of Health Sciences, where she served as a preceptor for students in community health nursing.
Jean devoted her life to the profession of nursing and to the love of family, friends, colleagues, patients, and many kitties, especially Mr. Friendly and Spooky. Jean’s love of learning and joy of teaching are well known to all who have worked with her, been her students, or benefited from her care. Her attention to detail was matched by an equal capacity to see the ”big picture.” She had a unique gift of making complex material understandable while at the same time maintaining correct explanations.Nothing was ever too minor for Jean to tackle on behalf of her patients.
Jean died on August 23, 1997, after a long and valiant struggle with breast cancer and its recurrence. She is survived by her parents, Leonard and Corky Halpenny, 3938 Santa Barbara, Tucson, Arizona 85711; her brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Mary (Pattison) Halpenny, also of Tucson; and goddaughters, Rene Collins of Flagstaff, Arizona and Kristen Presley of Alaska.
