Isaias A. Merino, 87, of Tucson, passed away September 10, 1997. He was retired from Magma Copper in San Manuel, worked for many years with Southern Pacific Railroad, and spent many years on the mission staff of the Tucson Indian Training School of the United Presbyterian Church during the late 40's and 50's. Born in El Paso, Texas, he graduated from Morenci High School in 1932. He was preceded in death by his wife Lupe and is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Bartholomew of Cave Creek, Nina Childs of Hacienda Heights, California; and son, Paul David Merino of Tucson. He is also survived by four grandsons and one great-grandson. Visitation Thursday 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. METZ, Hugh A., 84, of Tucson, died September 10, 1997. He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine; sons, Galen R. Metz of Phoenix, Michael H. Metz of Colorado Springs, CO.; daughters, Sabra (Jim) Borst of Tucson and Jena (Russell) Brown of Pima, Arizona. Also survived by granddaughter, Chanda D. Brown and grandson, Jacob S. Brown of Pima, AZ. Mr. Metz was a Sgt. Pilot during WWII. He taught pilots how to land on a short runway and many other aspects of flying. He owned and operated a retail jewelry store in Colorado Springs, CO for many years. He and his wife moved to Green Valley, AZ in 1976. They have resided in Tucson for the past three years. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 20, 1997 at St. Joseph’s Hospital Chapel, 350 N. Wilmot Rd. MORENO, Gilbert Elias, born September 22, 1904, died September 2, 1997 in San Diego, CA. He died from complications of a brain tumor. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Amalia Wood Moreno and two daughters, Edna Harper (Alexander) of San Diego and Mia Moreno of Kauai, Hawaii. Also a brother, Fred Elias Moreno of Tucson, Arizona and a sister-in-law, Mercy Wood Carrillo also of Tucson, AZ and many cousins, nephews and nieces. After completing his education in Tucson, AZ he began a lifetime career in the printing and publishing business at El Tucsonense, a family-owned Spanish language newspaper in Tucson, AZ owned by his father, Francisco S. Moreno and his mother, Rosa Elias Moreno. During World War II he moved to San Diego where he worked for Convair. He then continued at printing with the Copley Newspaper chain at their flagship publication The San Diego Union and Tribune as a linotype operator, linotype machinist and proofreader. He retried in the late 70's. He was a 67 year member of the International Typographical Union (now merged with the Communications Workers of America). A Memorial Mass was held September 11, 1997 at 12:00 noon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ocean Beach, CA. A Reception was held at his Point Loma family home where many family members and friends gathered and recalled many of his favorite memories and stories of his early childhood on the Elias’ Sopori Ranch (south of Tucson) and of his early life in his beloved Tucson and then his move to San Diego, CA where he became enamored of his adopted city and had many close friendships and acquaintances with many printing-trade friends as well as other family members that were also residents of San Diego. Summer always took many Tucsonans to visit with him and his beautiful family and of course he was always happy and thrilled to be host to any of his family members and friends. SCHOONMAKER, Ray Edward, 86, of Tucson, died September 14, 1997. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Frieda Mae Schoonmaker; his children, Lee E. Charles W. Hinkle, 77, of Tucson, died September 10, 1997. Survivors include wife of 56 years, Waneta; one son, Bob (Joanne) Hinkle of Seattle, WA; two sisters, Anna Lucille of Frankfort, KY, Shirley Kleu of Lexington, KY; two brothers, Frank Hinkle of Sharpsburg, KY, Maurice Hinkle of Paris, KY; four grandchildren, Tracy Cameron, Beth Brooks, Rob Hinkle, Sean Hinkle; four great-grandchildren, Tony, Rachel, Ashley and Chandler. Mr. Hinkle was an Assistant Supervisor with the Southern Pacific Railroad. He retired in 1981 after 27 years of service. Charles loved bowling and had been president of several leagues. ALBRIGHT, Wayne, (73), born December 11, 1923, beloved husband and father, went home to be with the Lord on September 10, 1997. Wayne was born in Wichita, Kansas, and moved to Tucson in 1935. There he met his wife of 52 years. They were married in 1945. Mr. Albright proudly served his country in WWII. He was part of the 82nd Airborne Division, 19th regiment, battle of the Rhine, where he reached the rank of Tech Sergeant. Mr. Albright was also a P.O.W. Wayne received the following decorations: American Theater Service Ribbon; The European African Middle Eastern Theater with Service Ribbon and bronze Battle Star; and the Good Conduct Medal. Wayne retired from Mobil Oil Corp. as a fuel truck driver after 39 years of service. His philosophy was to serve God and country, and to care for his family. He was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. Wayne is survived by his wife, Dorothy, from Tucson; his children, Barbara Burns (Robert) from Tucson, Deborah Cheves (Randy) from Tucson, Mark Albright (Marissa) from Albuquerque; his grandchildren, Jennifer Richards, Amy Fisher, Justin Burns, Rachel Cheves, Melissa Cheves, Timothy Cheves, Rebecca Albright, Ruby Albright, Amanda Albright, and Wayne Albright.
