RISK, Rufus H., Ret. Lt. Colonel USAF, 76, of Tucson, died August 11, 1997. Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Laverne; children, Judi Armstrong, Jim (Debbie) and Ron (Meggan); grandchildren, Jayson and Kacy Armstrong and Joel and Brittany Risk; one brother, Leon of Redlands, CA, plus many friends. Mr. Risk took great pride in his military career as a pilot retiring in 1964 and moving to Tucson where he enjoyed his time hunting and fishing. SCULLY, Rita Ann, 55, of Tucson, passed away August 9, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband Edmund Q. Scully of Tucson and brother Michael Timothy Ellis. She is survived by her devoted daughter Valerie K. Van Note-Kreider and son-in-law Marc Kreider of Falls Church, Virginia. She is also survived by her parents John and Ernestine Ellis; sisters Deborah, Cathi and Rebecca, and brother Mark. ANDERSON, Carl Elmore ”Andy”, died peacefully at home August 10, 1997. Andy was born October 31, 1905 and married Wanda Redfern Anderson in 1934. Andy was a member of the Elk’s and of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA). He is survived his wife; their children, (Janet Barta of MI and James E. Anderson of Tucson); three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; and a baby great-granddaughter. Their daughter Kay died in 1959. Visitation will be Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Hudgel’s SWAN FUNERAL HOME, 22nd & Swan, with Service following at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery.
BOTTING, Floyd W., 84, died August 9, 1997. Brother of Harold (Shirley) Botting of Tucson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. MARTHENS, George Walker, II, Colonel, U.S.A.F. (Ret), 84, of Chevy Chase, MD, died at his home on August 7, 1997. Colonel Marthens was the son of the late Sadie Willets, and son-in-law of the late Congressman, Brazilla Carroll and Louise Goff Reece of Tennessee. Col. Marthens was born in Pittsburgh, PA on May 3, 1913. Col. Marthens grew up in Arizona on a family ranch. As a career officer with the United States Military, Col. Marthens started his military career in the last surviving ”Calvary Regiment” in the United States Army. Col. Marthens then served as a pilot with the Army Air Corps during WWII (and held the rank of ”Colonel” in the Confederate Air Corps-1953.) In Post-War Europe Col. Marthens served as a ”Special Liaison and Field Officer” for the Defense Department reporting to and working closely with President Eisenhower on ”National Security Issues” of that time. Col. Marthens served with the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1958-60) and as an Air Force Special Projects Officer at the Pentagon. As a teacher Col. Marthens taught various Aerospace Computer and Operational/Logistic and Statistical Research classes at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) for six years. During his military career Col. Marthens was the recipient of numerous ”Meritorious Service” Medals including two Legion of Merit medals. Col Marthens was an honors graduate of the University of Arizona (1942), Harvard University (1949) and the Armed Forces Staff College (1954). Col. Marthens also served as the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Carter County Bank, TN and as Chairman of both the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the First People’s Bank in Johnson City, TN. An avid sports fan and player, Col. Marthens attended the University of Arizona on a baseball scholarship and played briefly with the Detroit Tigers. Col. Marthens was a Championship Tennis player for the Armed Forces in the late 50's and early 60's, as well as a coach with then ICAF Softball League. Col. Marthens was also an accomplished horseman and ”COWBOY” as he liked to be known. Col. Marthens retired from the Air Force in 1967 after 30 years of service and enjoyed a number of entrepreneurial careers. These careers included owning his own Corporation, managing financial investments, research and analysis in the oil and gas field, as well as researching, wildcating and drilling his own oil and gas wells in the state of West Virginia. Besides his wife of 45 years, Louise R. Marthens, he leaves behind two daughters, Louise R. Marthens of Gaithersburg, MD and Carol A. Marthens of McKinney, TX; two sons, George W. Marthens III of Centreville, VA and Bradford G. Marthens of Block Island, RI; and two grandchildren. Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 15, 1997 at Fort Meyer Chapel, Fort Myer, Virginia. Interment Arlington National Cemetery. NICHOLAOU, Maria N., 89, of Phoenix, formerly of Nogales, passed away August 8, 1997. She was born in Greece in 1907. She then moved to New York in 1930 with her husband. She and her husband then moved to Nogales along with their three children. She is survived by her sons, George Nicholaou of Paradise Valley, Dino Nicholaou of Mesa; and daughter, Pauline Kontsiotis of Phoenix. She was a wonderful, loving mother and wife to her husband and three children.
