BARNHART, Josephine M., 86, passed away peacefully on July 22, 1997. Survived by her children, Homer Phininzy (Virginia) of Douglas, Salome Navarro (Rudy) of Tucson, Ralph Barnhart (Maria) of Phoenix; her three sisters, Florence of CO, Rose of CO, Alice of NM; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.Josephine will be very missed by her family. Memorial Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 1997 at Kingdom Hall, 1910 S. San Antonio Drive.

CZERNY, Everett Watson, MD., died suddenly in Denver, CO, Wednesday, July 30, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Gregory Czerny; son, Bradford Rush (Una Yazzie); daughter, Betsy Fredrick (David); two grandsons, Eric and Kevin; and a sister-in-law, Judith Czerny. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, August 4, 4:00 p.m. at Grace St. Paul’s Church, 2331 E.Adams. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, P. O. GLUNT, Earl F., 81, of Tucson, died July 31, 1997. Survived by his wife of 39 years, Angeline Glunt; a sister in Pennsylvania; brother-in-law, James (Dorothy) Tsaconas of Buffalo, NY; sister-in-law, Rita (Arthur) Grant of Tucson. HAMMOND, James Earl, 52, of Tucson, passed away on July 29, 1997. He is survived by wife, Barbara; daughter, Brandee; son and daughter-in-law, Kory and Sandra; two grandchildren, Joseph and Erica; sister, Donna. All of his friends and Family loved him very much and will greatly miss him. Friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, August 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Thornydale Family Church, 10501 N. PORTER, Gertrude F., 86, of Tucson, died July 31, 1997. Preceded in death by husband, Raymond and son, Melvin. She is survived by sons, Raymond (Nancy) of CA, Robert (Mary) of Tucson, daughters, Kathleen (Eric) Van Hoesen of Tucson and Pauline (Ron) Baran of CA; sister, Ruby Bragdon of MA; nephew, Donald T.Thompson of Tucson; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 1:00 p.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1800 S. Kolb Rd. Interment will follow in South Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday, 11:00 a.m. until Service time at OMOS. The Rosary will be prayed at noon. SMOTHERS, Michael J., 34, of Tucson, AZ, died July 26, 1997 in Arivaca, AZ. Survived by wife, Traci; children, Katherine and Michael of CA; parents, Joe and Carolyn of Tucson, AZ; brother, Patrick of CA; and grandparents, Joe and Betty of Phoenix, AZ. No services will be held.

ALVAREZ, Vicente O. ”Harpo”, 84, of Tucson, passed away July 29, 1997. Survived by friends, Raul y Angela Lopez, Ignacio Valenzuela; nieces, Ernestina Morris, Ruth Molina, Maria Vargas; nephews, Jesus, Miguel and Augustine Bernal. Vincent ”Harpo” worked at Sunnyside for many years and retired. He had a great sense of humor, we will miss him. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 1, 1997 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY (South Chapel), 240 South Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Saturday, August 2, 1997 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, 192 South Stone Ave. Interment to follow at South Lawn Cemetery. BIAGAS, Albert Paul, Jr., was born to Albert Paul and Ora Jean Biagas on November 6, 1933 and was raised in Lake Charles, LA. After graduating from Xavier University in New Orleans, he served in the U.S. Army for two years as a Medical Laboratory Specialist and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. After receiving his honorable discharge from the military, Albert lived briefly in Los Angeles, before settling in Washington D.C., where he began his career in education. He taught in the D.C. Public School system for 13 years, before accepting a position in 1972 with the Department of Defense and moving to Frankfurt, Germany. For the next 22 years he worked as a teacher in the Department of Defense School systems in Frankfurt and later in Okinawa, Japan before retiring from teaching in 1994. During his time overseas he received a Master’s Degree from Boston University’s European Division. Albert was a member of the National Education Associations’, Overseas Education Associations’ Phi Delta Kappa organization. Albert and his family traveled extensively in both Europe and Asia during the time they lived abroad. Albert was also an avid golfer who relished the opportunity to play on courses wherever his travels would take him. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Alvin and Paul and is survived and will be forever cherished by his beloved wife, Cindy; sons, Hal and Marc; daughter, Angela; grandchildren, Scott, Selena and Serenah and siblings, Katie Granger, Theresa Williams, Maydell Granger, Highland, Percy and Robert. He is also lovingly remembered by many family members and friends. Contributions to Our Mother of Sorrows Church, Youth Group, Crusader’s of the Cross, 1800 S. Kolb Rd., Tucson, AZ 85710, in Albert Paul Biagas, Jr.’s memory would be appreciated. BONJOUR, James D., Sr., 65, of Tucson died July 27, 1997. Survived by former wife, Nellie Nay Bonjour; children, Linda S. (John) Rechtin, Jamie D. (Denise) Bonjour, Jr., David LeRoy (Tracy) Bonjour and Joany Lynn Bonjour, all of Tucson, Vickie Lynn (Steve) Buckley of Phoenix, Cindy Lou (Mike) Jetmore, Kevin W. (Terri) Bonjour, both of Indiana; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Brother of Howard and Maurice Bonjour, Viola Dickerson, Doris Evans, Olive Skiles and Opal Tenny, all of Indiana. Funeral Services will be Friday, August 1, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. at ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL, with Burial to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. BOSS, Fannie Lou, age 83, born Camden, SC April 20, 1914, passed peacefully in her sleep on July 28, 1997. Daughter of Berta Mae Fouche’ Brady and Clyde M. Brady. Survived by children Carolyn Cindrich of Tucson, Bonnie L. Harnish of Deland, FL, and Preston E. Boss of Winter Park, FL; grandchildren, Pamela R. Weiss of MI, Richard Russ of FL, Timothy D. Nares of CA, Terry Nares of Syracuse, NY, Christopher P. Nares of Moravia, NY; five great-grandchildren. She was active in the Eastern Stars, Women’s League and the Salvation Army. She made specially designed ties when she was young and was a nurse’s aide for the N.Y. State Hospital until her retirement. In loving memory services will be held at 22nd St. Baptist Church, 10:00 a.m. on July 31, 1997.

Mabel Grace Edmiston, 80, of Tucson, passed away July 29, 1997 in Tucson. Preceded in death by her son, John David Edmiston. Survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, John B. Edmiston and one sister, Sue Cragwick and her family in Montana. After graduating from East Washington in Pennsylvania she moved to Arizona. She was a charter member of Arizona Pharmaceutical Association Auxiliary and active in their charitable projects and the scholarship program at the University of Arizona for Pharmacy Students. She was a member of Pueblo Junior Women’s Club and continued as a member of the Emeritus Group. Funeral Service 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 1, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, with Dr. Lee Scott officiating. Interment to follow at Tucson Memorial Park East Lawn. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 31, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

Major (Ret.) Donald E. Ethier, 77, died at St. Joseph’s Hospice on July 29, 1997. Born on January 9, 1920 in Ramsey, Michigan to Mary and Albert Ethier, he had an early career as a radio announcer, then joined the Army Air Corps in 1940 and served overseas during WWII as commander of a B-29. After retirement from Warner Robins AFB, GA in 1964, Major Ethier served as an air traffic controller and ultimately as airfield manager in charge of disaster control activities on several Air Force bases, retiring from Civil Service at Davis Monthan AFB in 1982. Survivors include his wife, Aileen; sons, Mark of Albuquerque, NM, Pierce of Portland, OR, Paul of Bonaire, GA and daughters, Clio Morris of Vidalia, GA and Yvonne of Tucson; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, August 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 9252 E. 22nd St. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Joseph’s Hospice or Immanuel Presbyterian Church.

HENLEY, Joan Ashby, 70, of Tucson, passed away July 29, 1997 in Glendale, AZ. Born in Nogales, AZ, August 24, 1926, she was the daughter of a pioneer Arizona family. She was a retired medical office manager, author and newspaper reporter. She is predeceased by husband, Robert F. Henley and survived and beloved by six children; daughters, Ann H. Linebarger (Richard) of Glendale, AZ, Juliet H. Larson (Larry) of Rainier, OR and Patricia H. Gasperich (Mark) of Clovis, NM and sons, Robert A. Henley (Carmen) of Tucson, William F. Henley (Mary), also of Tucson and James R. Henley (Leslie) of Glendale, AZ. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 9071 Old Spanish Trail, Tucson, AZ, Friday, August 1, 1997 at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Nogales Public Library, Nogales, AZ. TAYLOR, Thomas J., 64, died July 29, 1997 in Tucson. Survived by his wife, Joyce Taylor of Tucson; two sons, Mark Taylor of Tucson and Michael Taylor of Dallas, TX; three grandchildren, Alyssa, Kiersten and Preston. Thomas was a salesman and owned and operated a linen company. He will be missed by his family. Memorial Mass for Mr. Taylor will be Friday, August 1, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, 602 W. Ajo. Private inurnment will be at Holy Holy Hope Cemetery. Don Barnes, 49, died on the evening of November 19, 1997 in Exton, Pennsylvania. Don was preceded in death by his father, Charles Barnes. He is survived by his wife, Marianne; his children, Rachel, Daniel, and Adrienne; his mother, Carol, all of Tucson. Also surviving are his brother, Bill (Nancy) and their children, Angela, Alexandra and Carmel of Japan; his sister, Judy (Jim) LaLone and their children, Katie and Eric of Michigan; and his uncle, Herb (Liese) Barnes of Maine. Don’s life was dedicated to working with youth in crisis. From a childhood growing up in a group home operated by his parents to his work at Carson Valley School in Pennsylvania, the stage was set for joining the team that started VisionQuest in the early 1970's at the corner of Pima and Swan. Don’s drive, loyalty, hard work and optimism made him one of the vital directions of the management circle from which VisionQuest built a national organization. While he worked incessantly to give direction to the lives of thousands of troubled young people in programs around the country, the love he had for his family was always with him. Just entering a room, Don Barnes made an impact. His energy and humor lightened the load and gave us insight. He is greatly missed and is greatly loved by his family and his friends at VisionQuest. HARTNETT, Pat M., passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on November 19, 1997, but continues to touch the lives of many. Born December 18, 1934 to Maurice P. and Geraldine Hartnett in Rockford, IL. He had been a resident of Tucson for many years and well known in real estate and political circles. Survived by his wife, Ermalene; daughters, Cathy (John) Nicholas, Linda (Karl) Kinstle, Sandy (Buddy) Pope, and Ermalene Gallahue; six granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter; grandmother, Drusilla McFarlane; sister, Drusilla (Charles) Hickman, all of Perryville, MO; sister, Patrice Hartnett of CA; five nephews; Uncle Lyle (Audrey) Branham of Huntsville, AL. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. Memorial Services at First Southern Baptist, 445 East Speedway on November 26, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Southern Baptist Church or TMC Hospice. LEBER, Joseph John, 83, born in Franklin, Kansas. He is survived by his loving wife, Maxine after 55 years of marriage. He is also survived by his only son, Larry, and his wife, Dede. He loved and so enjoyed his four grandsons, Mark, Eric, Scott, and Todd. We spent many happy times fishing, camping, and watching sporting events. Grandpa Joe was the most generous and caring person, with the biggest of hearts. His love and guidance will remain with us forever. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, 1941-1946. He was a meat cutter and owned his own grocery store in Kansas. After moving to Tucson in 1957, he worked for Goodmans and later for Lucky’s. He retired in 1981 and then became a school crossing guard for twelve years. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo, Friday, November 28, 1997 at 2:30 p.m. Donations, in lieu of flowers, to the Salpointe Catholic Education Foundation at 1545 E. Copper St., Tucson, Arizona 85719. MOORE, Edgar W., 67, passed away November 20, 1997 in Tucson, Arizona.Survived by wife, Lorene Moore; one stepdaughter, Linda Kelly; one stepson, Lawrence Walther; two brothers, Albert Moore and James Moore; and four granddaughters. Mr. Moore was an Associate Professor of History from 1966-1990 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and retired as an Emeritus Professor of History. Professor Moore was a charter member of Phi Alpha Theta, Honorary National History Society founding member IUP Latin American Studies Program, developed the University’s fist courses on Native Americans. Presented scholarly papers at the Great Lakes History Conference, the Society for Americans Baseball Research, and the History Forum of Duquesne University. His research on missionary activity among the Navaho was published in the scholarly journal Presbyterian History. He was a pioneer in presenting topics on Native Americans and the American West in the popular culture mode, featuring the films of John Wayne and Gary Cooper. Visitation for Professor Moore will be November 25, 1997 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway, 881-0338.
