McGURREN, Henry ”Hank”, 86, a Chicago attorney for 62 years died Monday, November 17, 1997 at his home in Tucson, AZ. Mr. McGurren, a Chicago native, was an attorney with Department of Justice from the years 1941 through 1948, during which time he commuted to Washington, D.C. He then practiced corporate international and tax law with the firm of McGurren and McGurren until 1965. He continued to practice law in his own firm until his death. During the second World War and for many years following the war Mr. McGurren worked covertly for the office of the Secret Service. Mr. McGurren graduated from Cornell University in 1932. He received his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1935. Mr. McGurren is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carroll Brady McGurren; two daughters, Karen Hoyt and Joy Whitmer; their son, Henry J. McGurren; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Betty Newmeyer Owens
August 24, 1911 – November 17, 1997
Betty Newmeyer Owens, 86, died peacefully in her sleep on November 17, 1997. She was born in DuBois, Pennsylvania on August 24, 1911. Having visited Tucson many times beginning in 1956 she moved to Tucson in 1986, with her husband, William R. Owens. A Registered Nurse for 40 years, she was educated at Allegheny College and the Spencer Hospital School of Nursing in Meadville, Pennsylvania and took post-graduate training in tracheotomy at Bellview Hospital in New York City. Early in her career she was a Relief Investigator for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and subsequently served as a Pennsylvania Country School Nurse. Later in her career, her services as private duty nurse were much in demand in hospitals and homes because of her great compassion and competence. She was active in the communities where she and her family lived and served as a member and officer of the Faculty Wives’ Clubs at the University of Buffalo, Temple University and Russell Sage College (Troy, N.Y.), colleges at which her husband, was a professor. She and her husband were Danforth Foundation Associates, representing Russell Sage College and were co-chairs of the Doubles Club at the United Presbyterian Church. She also served on the Board of the YWCA and was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. Among her many interests she enjoyed reading, painting, the arts, needle-work and traveling. She traveled extensively in the United States and visited the British Isles and Europe with her family. She made enduring friendships all over the country. She was an excellent cook and relished entertaining her many friends in her home. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, William R. Owens of Tucson; her sister, Jakie Jean Didiwick of Selbyville, Delaware; her son, Russell K. Owens and his wife, Janet of Castleton, N.Y.; her daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) O. Conroy and her husband, James; her grandchildren, Benjamin R. Conroy and Catherine E. Conroy, all of Tucson; 7 nieces and nephews and the many close friends she enjoyed so much. She lived her life with passion and deeply touched her family and friends who greatly miss her. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, November 23, 1997 at 3:00 p.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6565 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ (85710). Mary E. Rodello
Mary, born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1929, had resided in Tucson since 1971.After a long and courageous struggle against cancer, she passed away on November 17, 1997. Mary is survived by her companion and husband of 42 years, Henry ”Joe” Rodello; daughter, Renee and husband Mike Stofko; grandchildren, Michelle Ingalls, Aaron Stofko, Melanie Cardenas; and great-granddaughter, Madison Cardenas. Mary retired from AT&T in 1986 and was an active member of the”Pioneers”. She continued working as chief dispatcher for Ready Rooter until her last days. She greatly enjoyed her work and lived life with an indomitable spirit. Mary’s loving and giving nature touched all with whom she came in contact. Mary is greatly loved and will be sorely missed both by her family and by the many friends she made here and all over the country as she traveled with her husband, Joe, as President of the 82nd Airborne Association. A memorial service will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, November 22, 1997, at Holy Hope Mausoleum, 3555 North Oracle Road. Internment immediately following Mass at Holy Hope Cemetery. SCOFIELD, Eugene H. ”Pete”, passed away November 15, 1997, in Tucson. Born September 6, 1909, in Terre Haute, Indiana. Survived by wife of 12 years, Gertrude; daughter, Dee Ann Sakrison (Jim); son John S. Scofield; and grandchildren, Holly Sakrison Clark (Reid), Jim Sakrison, Jr., and Michael Scofield. Preceded in death by wife Ruth. A graduate of Rose Polytechnic Institute in Terre Haute, Pete was a registered civil engineer employed for many years by the Federal Aviation Agency.Private services will be held. SHULKIN, William M., 83, passed away November 18, 1997 in Tucson, AZ. Born July 11, 1914 in Kalispell, Montana. Mr. Shulkin was a member of the Shrine Temple in Tucson. Survived by his loving wife, Marty; son, Michael Shulkin; daughter, Sandra Olsen; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers; one sister; other relatives and a host of friends. Elizabeth Dumitrov, 63, of Tucson, 4741 North Oeste Place, Tucson, AZ, died Wednesday morning, November 19, 1997 at Carondelet Hospice at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson, AZ. She was the wife of Peter Dumitrov. Mrs. Dumitrov was born in Ellenburg, NY, December 11, 1933, a daughter of the late Homer and Mildred (Fisher) Schutt. Mrs. Dumitrov moved to Waterbury, CT in 1946 and then to Naugatuck, CT in 1974. She then moved to Tucson, AZ in 1987. Mrs. Dumitrov was a past communicant of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Waterbury, CT where she was also a former Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Dumitrov was an active member of the Philoptochos Society of Waterbury, CT and was the former director of summer camp at Camp Laurel for the Waterbury Girls Club. Mrs. Dumitrov will always be remembered by friends and loved ones for her warmth and kindness. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Michael Fusco of Waterbury, CT and Joseph Fusco of Tucson, AZ; one daughter, Cathy Dumitrov of Tucson, AZ; one brother, Leonard Schutt of Tucson, AZ; two grandsons, Steven Fusco of New Milford, CT and Jesse Fusco of Tucson, AZ; one niece and two nephews. LENIHAN, F. MARCO, Mae Vernice, 78, of Tucson, died Saturday, November 8, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph D. Marco, III; grandson, Kevin; brother, Lloyd and sister, Ruth. She is survived by her children, Joseph D. Marco, IV, Pamela Marco Danjou; grandchildren, Joseph, Anthony, Andrew, Michael, Tammy, Shawn; and two great-grandsons; two brothers, Wayne and Ralph Erickson, also survive. A Registered nurse, Mrs. Marco graduated from Rayburn Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. She worked for over 42 years in Tucson, including; The Arizona Asthmatic Foundation, Kino Hospital Allergy Clinic and several Allergist’s offices. At her request there will be no services. Jack Loren Ruddell
Left us this November 17, 1997, following a brief illness. He was 85 years of age. Jack was born November 26, 1911 in Weatherford, OK. Survivors include his brother, George W. Ruddell of Dallas, TX; his sister, Betty (Ruddell) Hendrickson of Seattle, WA; his loving stepchildren, Eddie E. Fry of Alpine, CA, Zola Christensen of Descanso, CA, Jerri Ann Phillips of Baldwin, KS, Marlene Berry of Richwood, TX, Robert K. Smith of Salida, CO and Wayne E. Smith of San Diego, CA. He was blessed with a dear friend and companion in Helen White of Benson, AZ and took great pride in his 12 ”wonderful” grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his wife, Evelyn Marie; his parents, George and Belle Ruddell; his sister, Neoma (Ruddell) Dickey and brothers, Frank, John and Davis. Jack wished for cremation and to have his ashes scattered (as was his wifes) in a beautiful forested area in Descanso, CA.
