William M. Feinberg M.D., born April 21, 1952, passed away following sudden cardiac arrest on October 24, 1997. Dr. Feinberg was a professor of neurology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 13 years, Lois Loescher and devoted children, Max, age six and Hope, age four of Tucson. Other survivors include his parents, Dr. Milton and Marjorie Feinberg of Encino, CA and brother, Lawrence (Karen) of Los Angeles; in-laws, Dr. Thomas and Dorothy Loescher of Tucson, Jon Loescher (Carol) of San Diego, Eric Loescher (Laurie); two nephews and one niece of Portland, Oregon and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Bill was first and foremost an exceptional human being who treasured above all else, time spent with his family and friends. He endeared himself to countless others with his terrific sense of humor, gentle and caring nature and sharp intellect. Bill attended Stanford University and received his M.D. at University of California, San Francisco. Professionally, he will be remembered as an internationally-known expert in stroke prevention research and an excellent, compassionate physician. A memorial service will be held at University Medical Center, DuVal Auditorium, Tucson, Arizona on Friday, October 31 at noon. FENSTERMACHER, Walter Leon III, 50, of Tucson, died October 27, 1997. Survivors include his children, Wesley and Kisha; parents, Honor and Walter Fenstermacher II; one brother, Logan of New Jersey and one sister, Julia Trusley of Idaho. Graduating from Villanova University in Pennsylvania with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Walter did post graduate work at at the University of West Virginia. GONZALES, Peter O., age 61, a 55 year resident of Tucson, passed away October 25, 1997. Born April 25, 1936 in Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico. Mr. Gonzales served in the U.S. Army National Guard. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 40 years, Consuelo; daughter, Esther (David) Reddoch; son, Enrique (Maryann) Gonzales; daughter, Lola (Armando) Escalante; son, Pedro (Diane) Gonzales; 10 grandchildren also survive. A Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 1997 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Dale Korich, 37, died October 23, 1997 after a four-month battle with brain cancer. Dale attended Santa Rita High School in Tucson and graduated from the University of Illinois. At the time of his death, he was employed by NatureScape Lawn Service in Indiana. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, and their three children, Alex, Matt and Cassie, all of Granger, IN. He is also survived by his parents, Dick and Carol Korich; sister, Dee Korich; uncle, Sandy Korich; and grandmother, Mary Anne Ochran, all of Tucson, AZ. Services were held Sunday, October 26 at Chapel Hill Memorial Home in Osceola, IN. Pallbearers were Dale’s cousins, Sandy, Kerry and Sean Korich, his friend, Dave Kirby, his brother-in-law, Jeff Zumbrun, and his Tae Kwon Do instructor, Neil Bissel.
METCALF, Joseph Roscoe, born April 12, 1922 in Brocton, IL, passed away October 24, 1997. Survived by his wife, Margaret; sons, Dave (Pat) and Tom; daughter, Marcia Davenport; son-in-law, Dr. David Davenport; grandchildren, Deron, Amy and Julie Davenport, Melissa and Jacob Metcalf. Joe was educated in Redmond, Illinois. He joined the Army Air Corps and eventually was transferred to Davis Monthan in 1941. During World War II he was a B-24 lead Bomber pilot stationed in England with the 8th Air Force. He was decorated with the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After graduation from the U of A in 1948, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, he became a trainee with Sears in the Tucson store. In 1964 he returned as manager and opened the Park Mall Store. Retiring from Sears in 1978 he returned to Tucson where he was active in Catalina Rotary, on the Board of the YMCA, was the Executive Vice President of the Youth Foundation, a member of Skyline Country Club and Pinetop Lakes Country Club. He was also an active member of the White River Masonic Lodge in Show Low and the Builders Masonic Lodge in Tucson. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and many friends. Morris Benedict Smith, 80, died October 27, 1997. Served in the Army during WWII, graduate of Boston College. Was recognized across the country for his service in United Way for over 30 years. Moved to Tucson in 1969 as Executive Director of United Way. Active member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge #2572. BANTA, George Kent, 88, of Tucson, died on Sunday, October 26, 1997 at the Northwest Hospital. Mr. Banta was born and raised in Oxford, NE. After graduating from Oxford High School he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for two years, then attended the Williams Institute of Mortuary Science. Kent has worked in funeral service for over 50 years in several states to include: Denver and Springfield, CO, Kansas, California and Nebraska. He eventually purchased the funeral homes where he worked in Alma, NE from his employer, Mr. Zulauf. Mr. Banta remained a part of the funeral business until they moved to Tucson in 1990, even though he sold the funeral homes in 1975. He was very active in his churches both here and in Nebraska. He also was very involved in civic organizations while in Nebraska. He had served on the School Board in Alma, the Library Board, Masons and Shriners. Kent also served as Past District President of the Nebraska Funeral Directors Assn. His memberships in Tucson included St.Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Exchange Club of N. Tucson and a volunteer Interfaith Services. Mr. Banta is preceded in death by his parents and one brother. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Leona of Tucson; sons, R. Kent (Carol) Banta DDS of Tucson, Richard L. (Susan) Banta of San Antonio, TX, Robert J. (Pamela) Banta of Dallas, TX and eight grandchildren, Kaya, Jodi, Stacie, Erin, Molly, Megan, Ryan Blaine and Bradley and one great-grandson, Kalib. COOK, William H. II, 58, ”Jack of all trades, master of some, ” died Saturday, October 25, 1997 as the result of chronic lung disease. A 27 year resident of Tucson. He was active as a volunteer. A member of Oasis Lodge #52 and Monarch of Alton Kol Grotto and a third generation Mason. Survived by children, Sheryl (Johnny) of OH, William (Joan) of TX, Dale (Kim) of KY and Thomas (Donna) of TX and six grandchildren. Also survived by father, Edward (Jane) of Tucson; brothers, Richard (Bonnie) of OH and Ellis of Tucson and sister, Charlotte of Tucson. Preceded in death by mother, June and brother, Robert. DEHEER, Howard C., age 84, of Grand Haven, MI, formerly of Tucson, AZ, died Friday, October 24, 1997 at a local hospital. He was born October 13, 1913 in Grand Haven to Jacob and Kate (Pippel) DeHeer and married Marjorie Correll in 1941. They had been married 47 years at the time of her death, July 5, 1988. Mr. DeHerr was a lifelong resident of Grand Haven and owned Zen-De Manufacturing, retiring in 1979. He was previously employed by Anderson-Bolling, Ottawa Steel, Muskegon Tool and Die and Four Square in Grand Rapids. He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church, a former Elder and Deacon and also had been a Prayer Captain. Mr. DeHeer had served on the school board for Grand Haven Christian School and was a former member of the Sheriff Reserve. He also loved hunting. He is survived by his son, Dr. David (Jolene) DeHeer of Grand Rapids and son-in-law, Dr. Gregory Maciulla of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren, Jeff DeHeer, Jim, John and Julie Maciulla; one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth DeHeer; three sisters, Josie Moore, Louise DeHeer and Laura (Austin) Angel all of Grand Haven; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Trudy Maciulla in 1993 and his sister, Bertha in 1997. Service, 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Reformed Church, Grand Haven, MI with Rev. FITZGERALD, Michael James, 81, of Tucson, died Sunday, October 26, 1997. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marian; daughters, Betty Jo David, Patricia Ann Roucken; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Fitzgerald retired in 1981 as Vice President of the Container Equipment Development Division of Campbell Soup Company. He was a life member of Crescent Lodge #25, A.F. & A.M. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Tucson, Orient of Arizona. He was also a life member of Sabbar Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. of Tucson, where he was active in Greeters Unit. HALL, Mary Elizabeth, passed away in her sleep at her residence in Northridge, CA on October 13, 1997. She was a native of Wisconsin and had been a long time resident of Tucson. She is survived by her father, three sisters, one niece and four nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother. According to her wishes, her ashes were scattered over her beloved Arizona.
