Col. Warren E. Hender, U.S. Army (Ret), 76, of Tucson, formerly of Rock Island, IL, passed away October 5, 1997. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Betty; son, Michael (Janice) Hender of Chandler, AZ; daughter, Susan (Andy) Fink of Boise, ID; daughter, Carrie Hender of Tucson; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also is survived by brother, Douglas (Lorraine) Hender of Rock Island, IL; sister, Barbara (Don) Morris of Chico, CA; aunt, Marian Alvine of Rock Island, IL; brother-in-law, Richard Oglebay of Tucson; and several cherished nieces and nephews. Warren served 28 years in the US Army, retiring as a Colonel in 1972 from Ft. Huachuca, AZ. During his proud career, he served in Japan during World War II, Korea, Rome, Italy, the Pentagon and Bangkok, Thailand, as well as numerous other stateside posts while performing such assignments as ordinance, MAAG, IG, procurement and logistics. After retirement Warren worked for and then owned Travis Television in Tucson. He later sold the business and retired to full-time golf, maintaining an active membership at the DMAFB, Blanchard Golf Course. He spent many enjoyable years participating in tournaments and challenging his wife and friends. In the years prior to his military service, Warren worked at the Rock Island Arsenal as a tool and die maker. He attended Lyons and Augustana Colleges in IL. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge #2532, MOWW, TROA, and the Masons. Warren was born on March 23, 1921 in Washington, IA. He is preceded in death by parents, Walter Earl and Ruth (Anderson) Hender. Memorial Service will be at Evangelical Lutheran Church of the King, 2450 S. Kolb Rd. (at Golf Links), on Tuesday, October 14, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the King in Warren’s name. Warren’s joy and love of life will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

KELLER, Dr. John Haney, III, 83, passed away after a short illness October 10, 1997. Father of John H. Keller IV of Denver, CO, Johanna B. Keller of New York City, NY and Liluer K. Seifried of Tulsa, OK; grandfather of Kurt Seifried and Erica Seifried. He attended pre-med school at Duke University and Tulane Medical School. Entered US Marine Corps in 1939 and transferred to the US Army from 1940-1947, serving in the North Atlantic and Pacific area during WWII as a physician. From 1947 to 1962 he practiced medicine in Ahoskie, NC and then at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Aurora, CO. After retiring he lived in California and Arizona. Memorial Service 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 13, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. Contributions to St. Joseph’s Hospital, 350 N. Wilmot, Tucson 85711 in memory of Dr. John H.Keller III.

SIEGEL, Richard, 84, died October 10, 1997. Uncle of David Wohlgemuth of Woodland Hills, CA; four grandnieces also survive. He was a life member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #385. A volunteer for 15 years at University Medical Center, a service counselor with SCORE for 10 years advising small businesses. Graveside Service 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12 at Evergreen Cemetery with Rabbi Joseph S. Weizenbaum officiating. In addition to the Graveside Service there will be Memorial Service Sunday, October 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the Doubletree Inn, 445 S. Alvernon Way. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

LEWIS, William Edward, 74, formerly of Sidney, Ohio, passed away on October 6, 1997. Husband of Norma Lewis of Tucson; father of Steve Lewis of Chicago, IL, Greg (Maggie) Lewis of Phoenix, AZ, Randy (Sandy) Lewis, Roger (Terrie) Lewis and Connie Nine (Glenn McLaughlin) all of Tucson; brother of Bob (Rita) Dye of Pensacola, FL, Dick Lewis of Truth or Consequences, NM, Betty Flanagan of Sidney, OH and Phyllis Lewis of Schiller Park, IL; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. He was a US Army WWII veteran, a member of D.A.V. Post 18, a retired auto body repairman and an avid motorcycle enthusiast. Mass will be offered 12:00 noon Friday, October 10, 1997 at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1800 S. Kolb Rd., with Father Charles Knapp officiating. Interment to follow at Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery. Rosary will be recited 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 9 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL. Contributions may be made to Casa de Los Ninos, 347 E. MORENO, Sarah Mattia, age 73, of Menagers, AZ, died October 7, 1997. Survivors include; sisters, Clara, Katherine, Juanita, Sally, Elizabeth, Chris; brothers: Francisco and Angelo. Friends may call at Mrs. Moreno’s residence in Menagers Dam, Friday, October 10, 1997 from 6:00 p.m. Graveside services will be at Menagers Dam Cemetery, 8:00 a.m. Saturday. PYLE, Milton Otto, 79, died of a heart attack on October 2, 1997, at his home in Franklin, TN. He was born on March 10, 1918, in Vacaville, CA. He graduated from San Jose State University in 1942. In 1942 he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps., where he was selected to receive 18 months of training in the use of radar at Harvard and MIT. He was married in Boston during that time. He later served overseas in Burma, India, China, and Okinawa, Japan, retiring at the end of the war with a rank of Captain. He worked for 32 years for RCA on various projects, including the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System. He lived for 30 years in Haddonfield, NJ, retiring to Tucson, AZ in 1981. In 1988, he moved to Franklin. He is survived by his wife, Jean of Franklin; sons, Charles of Tucson; Milton Jr. of Seattle, and Cabot of Nashville, TN; daughter, Cynthia, also of Nashville; brothers, Louis of Susanville, CA; and Edlef of Vacaville; and eight grandchildren. He was buried on October 6, 1997, in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery after a graveside service. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be sent to the Bill Wilkerson Hearing and Speech Center, 1114 19th Ave. South, Nashville, TN, 37212.

TISDALE, Pauline E., 90 years old, died Monday, October 6, 1997 in Tucson. Survived by daughter, Pearl Henson of Tucson; granddaughter, Gloria Johannson; great-grandchildren, Melinda McCray and David Henson, all of Phoenix; four great-great-grandchildren. Services and burial will be in Mt. Carmel, IL. Arrangements by WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 881-0338.

ROSS, Renee, 86, of Tucson, died December 21, 1996. Renee S. Ross (Schaefer) was born June 1, 1910 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Renee received a Nursing Degree from the University of Minnesota and worked as a nurse in Minneapolis. After her graduation she moved to Tucson in May of 1961 with her husband, John B. Ross who preceded her in death in April of 1974. She had no children and is survived by her sister, Louise McCahill of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Memorial will be at St. Philips in the Hills Episcopal Church, on Monday, 11:30 a.m. January 13, 1996, with Rev. Peter Cheney officiating. Interment will be private. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

WOOTEN, Theodore R., 54, of Tucson, died October 5, 1997. A retired machinist and a Vietnam veteran awarded two bronze stars. Armorer, a long time S.C.A. member known as Count Master Sir Theo Dwarf Monster Crusadene Lord Mightkin Wood, A.O.A., K.S.C.A., O.P., O.Q.G., O.L.A., O.O.S. He is survived by his wife, Deborah of Tucson; son, Daniel of Albuquerque, NM; brother Donald of Los Angels; sisters, Linda Barker of Spring Valley, CA and E. Loraine Entwhistle of Yuma, AZ. Funeral Services Saturday, October 11, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to service time at ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3435 N. 1st Ave., (888-1111). Reception follows at Sir John of Flanders, (745-1200). Contributions may be made to the Theodore Wooten Memorial Fund at Bank One. For information contact Deborah Wooten.

CHRISTENSEN, Geraldine, age 67, of Tucson, AZ, died October 7, 1997. Survived by husband, Alfred; daughter, Karen (Edward) Goff of St. Paul, MN; son, Richard (Diane) Christensen of De Kalb, IL; grandchildren, Ryan Goff of St. Paul, Abigail Christensen, Rachel Parness, and Aaron Parness, all of De Kalb, IL. Services will be held at Resurrection Lutheran Church, Oro Valley, 11575 N. 1st Ave., Friday, October 10th at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Snyder officiating. Entombment will follow at a later date. Donations may be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church in lieu of flowers at the family’s request. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee.

DOTY, Velma Brown, died Saturday, October 4, 1997 at the age of 81. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth H. Brown; and by her mother, Grace Storie Graves; and father, Herbert Graves. She is survived by her only child, Linda Brown Lynn; and her sister-in-law, Xenia Brown Gills, both of Tucson, AZ.Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 9, 1997, at Evergreen Cemetery, Oracle and Ft. Lowell.

GONZALEZ, Deanna Lee, born August 13, 1957, died October 6, 1997. Preceded in death by her loving husband of 20 years, Francisco G. Gonzalez. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Manuel; and her two sons, Francisco L. Gonzalez, Jr. and Luis Gonzalez. She had two grandchildren whom she loved very much, Michael Isaiah Manuel and Destiny Marie Bracamonte. She is also survived by her father, David W. Manuel and her mother, Gloriana Manuel; sisters, Margaret Wilkins of Atlanta, GA, Judith Hillier, Jennifer Manuel, Yvonne Ybarra; and one brother, Michael Manuel, all of Tucson. She also had eight half-brothers and sisters, all of Gu-Vo, AZ. She had many nieces and nephews that she cared for and loved.Deanna died peacefully at Kino Community Hospital. She was surrounded by many family members as she made her journey home to be with Jesus. Visitation to be held at First Southern Baptist Chapel, 445 E. Speedway, on Friday, October 10, 1997 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Funeral Service to be held on Saturday, October 11, 1997 at 9:00 a.m. in the First Southern Baptist Chapel. Burial will be held in Ajo, AZ following the service.

Melinda Ann Leon, In loving memory of Melinda Ann Leon, age 23. Melinda is survived by her parents, Oscar and Terry Leon; her brother and sister-in-law, Oscar and Angela Leon; her sister, Susana Leon and Peter Rivera; her only nephews, Peter and Jesse Rivera and Jeffrey and Oscar Leon, Jr.; her grandparents, Carlos and Amelia Lopez. Melinda is an alumni of Tucson High School. She is also in the top five percent of the Who’s Who’s of American High Schoolers. She also attended NAU. Melinda is a published poet and an accomplished athlete and also an avid lover of the Tex/Mex music. Visitation Thursday from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. Stone Ave. Mass will be held on Friday, October 10 at 10:00 a.m. at Santa Cruz Church at the corner of 6th Ave. and 22nd St. Flowers may be sent to Tucson Mortuary or donations made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation of Arizona in Melinda Leon’s name. Melinda, you will be greatly missed by all whom you loved….. We Love You.

LEVY, Edward ”Ed”, age 45, born in Tucson, AZ on June 6, 1952; died in Elko, NV on October 2, 1997. Preceded by father, Leonard and brother, Leonard Jr. Survived by wife, Kathy Poston Levy; children, Michelle, Edward Jr.”Eddie” and Bernadette Levy; grandchildren, Jacob Edward, LeeAnn and Rayn Levy; mother, Mary Benitez Levy; brothers, Anthony ”Tony”, Alfred and George ”Ricky”. Ed was born and raised in Tucson, AZ. He graduated from Tucson High School in 1970. He was employed by Anaconda/Annamax Copper Mine from 1970 to 1984. In 1984 he and his family relocated to Elko, NV where he became employed with Newmont Gold Company. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 10, 1997 from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be held on Saturday, October 11, 1997 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Cathedral. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. RODNEY, Hugh L., born in Sterling, CO on February 5, 1930, died on October 8, 1997. Hugh is survived by his wife, Patricia; and children, Michael Rodney, Christine Rodney, Paula Birch, Regan Noad, John Ross and Scott Ross; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Hugh is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Millie and Robert Giacomini; nieces and nephews. Hugh attended the U. of A. and graduated from Regis U. (Denver, CO) in 1951. Hugh was a Real Estate Broker in Tucson for more than 45 years. In the years before his retirement, he was the Lease and Rights of Way administrator for the Tohono O’odham Nation. Hugh was an avid golfer, belonging to a number of golf clubs in and around Tucson. Along with other service and social clubs, Hugh was a 45 year member of the Elks, most recently affiliated with Lodge #2532. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, the 14th at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo, followed by a brunch at the Elks Lodge, 615 S. Pantano at Kenyon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Pius X (Landscape Committee) or a charity of your choice.

Joanna Mary Rosinski, 77, of Tucson, returned to God October 3, 1997 after a long struggle with heart disease. She passed away peacefully in her home with family members present. Joanna was born February 29, 1920 in Buffalo, NY. At an early age she moved to Cass City, MI where she resided until her move to Tucson, AZ in 1947. Joanna was preceded in death by her parents, Casmir and Bernice Straty, her brother, Henry and her sister Frances. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Mitchell Rosinski; her only son, Richard J. Frankowski; granddaughters, Lisa K. Darrough, Darlene A. Usborne (of Show Low), Dawn M. Frankowski, Shannon L. Escalante and Joleen E. Gonsalves, all of Tucson; great-grandchildren, Jennifer Payan, Sarah and Patrick Darrough, Ashlee Joanna Usborne, Danielle Escalante and Joey Gonsalves; great-great-grandchild, Jason Darrough; sisters, Cassie Wydra, Rose Zolinski, Helen Brown, Florence Robinson and Mary Marki; many nieces and nephews; grandsons-in-law, Timothy A. Usborne, Martin Escalante, Patrick Darrough and Barry Gonsalves. Joanna was an active member of the Catholic Church and dedicated over 2, 000 hours of her time to community service. She was active in Veteran affairs and instrumental in the naming of the Veteran’s Memorial Interchange and Kino Veteran’s Memorial Sports Park in Tucson. Joanna gave of herself throughout her life. She is loved beyond words and will remain with us in spirit forever. Graveside Services were held October 3, 1997 at Holy Hope Cemetery for family members only.
