Mrs. Edna E. Webb
Member of the Douglas, Arizona Unified School District Governing Board, died Monday, October 6, 1997 at Tucson Medial Center of a heart attack. She was 79 and lifelong resident of Douglas, AZ.
She married Robert D. Webb, now a retired Southern Pacific engineer on August 18, 1935. The couple celebrated their 62ndwedding anniversary at Grace Methodist Church in Douglas in 1997. Mr. and Mrs. Webb have three children, a daughter, Jacqueline E. Stewart; a son, Robert W. Webb, both of Tucson; and a son, Richard R. Webb of Phoenix. They have four grandchildren, Leslie E. Ruben, Joseph Courtney Lillywhite, and Rob M. Webb of Tucson, and Sunny E. Webb of San Francisco. Mrs. Webb leaves a sister, Faye Bruce of Douglas and two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Levi Ruben of Tucson.
Mrs. Webb was born in Douglas, December 5, 1917 to William and Bess Stocks, who came to Arizona in 1882. She graduated from Douglas High School as Salutatorian in 1935, and was a member of the first graduating class of Cochise College. She graduated with distinction from the University ofArizona, receiving her Master of Education Degree in 1973.
In 1971, Mrs. Webb was one of 14 teachers in Arizona selected to participate in a pilot program of the Health, Education and Welfare Department of the U.S. to study people lore and its use in classrooms. She was selected Lady of the Year for 1975 by Beta Sigma Phi.
Mrs. Webb taught English at Douglas High School for nine years and was voted Teacher of the Year in 1976, by the students. She was a member of the Cochise Reading Council, The Arizona English Teachers Association, the YWCA and the Women’s Society for Christian service.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Education Society, a den mother for the Cub Scouts and Brownies, a member of PTA and a past president of the Douglas Womens’ Club. She enjoyed traveling and collecting legends from around the world and helped create the Arizona Folklore Society in Cochise County.
Douglas School Superintendent, Dr. Jesus Greer, said: ”Mrs. Webb was an educator whose love for education and children extended into her retirement years. The community has lost a great person. The education community will miss her. Speaking for the Board, the teachers and the administrative staff, I want to extend our condolences to the Webb Family who have been pioneers in our community.” Mrs. Webb was serving her second term as a Douglas Unified School District Governing Board member.
Pastor Kathy Burt of Grace United Methodist Church, Douglas said: ”Mrs. Webb was well known in Douglas and very dedicated to her Christian faith; and, will be missed by the community and her loving family. There will be a double funeral with Mrs. Webb’s dear and lifelong friend, Virginia Thomas who died October 3.”
Brown-Page Mortuary of Douglas is handling the funeral arrangements. Services at the Grace United Methodist Church in Douglas are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory, may be sent to the charity of one’s choice.
ATKINSON, Charlotte Fiske, 88, of Tucson, died October 6, 1997. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Fred) Russell; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Ruth) Russell, Houston, Cynthia (Jim) Wheeler, Cumming, GA, Candace (Kip) Buss, Norcross, GA and Catherine (Craig) McKee, Tampa, FL; great-grandchildren, Dina and Caleb Russell, Houston, Lauren and Andrew Buss, Norcross. CARMICHAEL, Eugene (Gene) Martin, 67, died Saturday, October 4, 1997, surrounded by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Georgia Ann; son, Dennis (Jill) Carmichael and grandchildren, Kristin, Lindsay and Sean, all of Rockford, IL; brothers, Harry D. Carmichael of Aurora, CO and Richard (Shirley) Carmichael of Fremont, NE; uncle, Wes (Catherine) Carmichael of Phoenix, AZ; aunt, Ethel Carmichael of Sidney, NE; sister-in-law, Joyce Pesek of Ord, NE and brother-in-law, Jim Miller of Enfield, CT. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Lynn; parents, Harry and Mildred Carmichael and sister, Catherine Miller. Gene began his life journey on December 2, 1929 in Kearney, NE and attended school there. In 1947 he joined the Nebraska National Guard. He entered the United States Air Force in 1950, serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. In 1970, Gene retired as a Tech Sergeant at DMAFB. After retiring he worked for TUSD, Gates Learjet and for AMARC, where he retired in 1994. Gene was an active member of Christ Church United Methodist; Builders Masonic Lodge #60, Order of Eastern Star Desert Star Chapter #54; Sabbar Temple of Tucson and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. He was a Past Associate Grand Guardian of Jobs’ Daughters of Arizona. Gene enjoyed playing cards, traveling and camping, having coffee with his cronies, watching sports (especially Arizona Wildcats and Nebraska Cornhuskers) and visiting with his many friends. His home and family were his first love and seeing his three grandchildren always brought a smile to his face. A Memorial service will be held at Christ Church United Methodist, 655 N. Jayne Connor Craig returned to God on October 3, 1997 after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved mother of Sandra, Sharon Olivia, Edward and George. Loving grandmother of Eric, Jennifer, Ashley, Brian, Moira, Carolyn and Leigh Ann. She will be greatly missed by her sons-in-law, Jean Digras and Dennis Sefert; and her daughters-in-law, Kathy and Karen Craig; as well as all her dear friends in Tucson and her home town of Chicago. Jayne lived her life with joy in her heart and thanks to her devoted care team, Norma, Starr, Nancy and Linda, she died in peace. CRANE, Josiah Wellington, died October 6, 1997 in Tucson, AZ. He is the second son of Josiah Wellington Crane, MD and Caroline Hauer; and had five children by his first wife, Eleanor C. Walsh, deceased of Trenton, NJ; Josiah Wellington Crane of Sea Girt, NJ, Carolyn Leland of St. Pete, FL, Mary Louise, deceased, Richard of Venice, FL and Jeffery of Yardley, PA. He was graduated from Trenton, NJ High School in 1927; Georgetown University, Washington, DC in 1931 and 1932. He attended Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and University of Leiden and practiced medicine in rural Georgia and in the VAH, Augusta, Georgia until retirement in 1979 when he moved to Tucson, AZ. DOTY, Velma Brown, died Saturday, October 4, 1997 at the age of 81. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth H. Brown; and by her mother, Grace Storie Graves; and father, Herbert Graves. Richard Frank Eckhoff (Dick), 59, died October 5, 1997 after a short bout with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Nellie. Father of Rick, John, Vickie and Doug; grandfather of Dustin, Chenin, Ashlee, Aaron, Aubrei, Leah, Alexandrea, Dalton, Dallas and Cheyenne; brother of Jim Eckhoff, Kathy Younger, Rita Baxter and his loving mother, Laura. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry. Dick served 32 years in the military. He retired from the US Naval Reserves. He served seven years with the Phoenix Police Dept., spending 20 years in the business of insurance and investigations. Dick was born April 1, 1938 in Cincinnati, OH and has been an Arizona resident since 1955. Dick enjoyed a full life while acquiring many friends as an avid golfer and sportsman. HENDRICKSON, Sylvia E., MAJ. ANC, age 78, born in Westmont, NJ, May 10, 1919. After graduation as an R.N. from Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, she entered the Army Nurse Corps in 1942 during World War II and served in Africa and Italy. After the War, she served in Germany and various places in the U.S. Following 25 years of active service, she retired from the ANC in 1967 from Ft. Huachuca and made her home in Tucson. She was a member of the American Legion, Womens Over Seas League, Jefferson Hospital Alumni, The Humane Society (locally and within the U.S.), Retired Officers Association, and Retired Nurses Association. She is survived by her twin brother, Walter Hendrickson; and her nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 9th, 1997 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. JACOBS, Pamela Lee DeMent. Pamela went to a better place on October 6, 1997. Pam was born in St. Petersburg, FL on July 25, 1955 and was a resident of Tucson since 1959. She was in the first class for special education at Miles School and was in the first graduating class at Santa Rita High School and attended Pima College after high school graduation. She wrote poetry, did fine caligraphy and was a talented landscape artist. She was the longest living dialysis patient in Arizona. Pam was an avid bird lover and a long time member of Avicultural Society of Tucson. Pam will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her mother, Karen Neiswonger; father, Dr. John F. DeMent; stepmother, Maggie DeMent; sister, Cynthia Hargis; brothers, John DeMent, Jr. and Scott DeMent; nieces, Michelle Lacey, Alyssa and Petrina; nephews, David and Michael Hargis; and two loving birds, Phoenix and Max. Patrick Alfred Levasseur, Jr., 64, died October 4, 1997. Husband of Doris Levasseur; father of Christina McCown and Daniel Levasseur; grandfather of David Patrick Levasseur and Lindy Brindley; brother of Raymond Levasseur; son of Theresa Levasseur. LEVY, Edward ”Ed”, age 45, born in Tucson, AZ on June 6, 1952; died in Elko, NV on October 2, 1997. LEWIS, William Edward, 74, formerly of Sidney, Ohio, passed away on October 6, 1997.
