Dr. Richard H. Gallagher
President Emeritus, early pioneer of the finite element method, and former Dean of Engineering at University of Arizona.
Richard H. Gallagher, 69, a former Dean of the University of Arizona College of Engineering and President Emeritus of Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY, died September 30, 1997 in Tucson of cancer. Dr. Gallagher was an internationally known, much honored expert in engineering mechanics and a pioneer of the finite element method (FEM), a fundamental mathematical technique used throughout the world in the computer simulation of engineering behavior, in areas such as the design of ships, aircraft, buildings and electrical phenomena. His efforts literally paved the way for a billion dollar industry, thousands of careers and millions of lives improved.
After earning his Bachelors and Masters degrees from New York University, he embarked on a 17-year career in industry during which he earned a PhD from SUNY Buffalo in 1967. During this time, he held positions at the Civil Aviation Authority, Texaco and Bell Aerospace, where he served as an assistant chief engineer in a company of 15, 000 people and began research in 1956 which pioneered the origins of FEM.
In 1967, he joined the faculty of Cornell University, where he served as chairman of the structural engineering department in its college of Engineering until 1978. From 1978 through 1984, he was Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona, and became provost of Worcester Polytechnic Institute from 1984 through 1988. Subsequently, he became president of Clarkson University, where he served until his retirement in 1995.
While at Clarkson, he oversaw a successful development campaign raising $100 million dollars in funding of a student center, an ice hockey arena, and the Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP). In 1996, the University dedicated the Richard H.Gallagher Laboratories Building in his honor, housing over one hundred laboratories. He and his wife, Terry traveled as invited guests to over 76 countries and 6 continents, sharing his expertise in FEM worldwide.
Among the many honors Dr. Gallagher received in his career are the Worcester Warner Reed Medal and ASME Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineering, the Congress Medal from the International Association of Computational Mechanics and the Chancellor Furnas Medal from SUNY, Buffalo. The American Society of Engineering Education also awarded him its highest honor, The Lamme Medal, and elected him to his Hall of Fame in 1993. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1983 and became the first North American to be awarded an honorary doctorate from Shanghai University of Technology in 1992, as well as receiving honorary doctorates and fellowships from Clarkson University, the Technical University of Vienna, and the University College of Swansea, Wales. He served as a Fulbright Fellow to Australia in 1973, and was a visiting professor at university in Japan, United Kingdom and India. His professional career is chronicled in the book ”Early FEM Pioneers”, by John Robinson, published in the United Kingdom.
