LIPE, K. Jack, born January 29, 1903, died January 13, 1998. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Opal, and survived by daughters, Kathryn Lipe and Joann Einbecker of Tucson; and son, Jack Lipe of Wichita, KS. He is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Jack Lipe was the Athletic Director at Thornton Twp. High School and Jr. College in Harvey, IL for many years. He retired to Tucson in 1970. Private services. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. @ McGee.

MARINETTI, Pasquale L., 84, died January 11, 1998 after a long illness, preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Connie, December 9, 1997. Survived by his two sons, Dwain (Marion) and Robert (Bonnie) Marinetti; brothers, Dr. Guido V. (Antoinette), Lawrence (Kathleen), Michael (Helen) Marinetti; sisters, Gloria (Ivan) Christopherson and Dorothy (Christopher) Trovato. Many nieces and nephews. Pasquale was an employee of Eastman Kodak Corp. for 30 years in quality control. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 p.m. January 16, 1998 at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. POLANCO, Rosendo L., 65 of Tucson, passed away January 12, 1998. Survived by wife, Brigida J. Polanco; daughters, Bonnie (Ray) Apalategui, Wendy (Tim) Dahms, Lisa (Rudy) Leon; sons, Martin (Molly) Polanco, Timothy (Vanessa) Polanco; five sisters; two brothers; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Retired from Magma Copper Company after 39 years of service. He was an avid fisherman and hunter with family and friends. He spent his summers with his wife, Bri and family in the White Mountains. He was a man of a kind heart and a Godly spirit who helped those less fortunate. He will forever be remembered by his family and many friends as one who demonstrated great care, compassion and unselfish love for everyone. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 15, 1998 from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 601 E. Ft. Lowell, with scripture recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Friday, January 16, 1998 at 9:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. SEITZ, Irene, 87, passed away January 12, 1998. She was born in Freeport, PA, daughter of Fred and Emma Seitz. A resident of Tucson since 1975, she is survived by two sisters, Isabelle Gilbert of Flora, IN, Frances L. Seitz of Tucson. She will be remembered by several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. As a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, she actively supported the Presbyterian Church in Sells, AZ. Services, Thursday, 2:00 p.m., EVERGREEN MORTUARY, Dr. Andrew G. Ross, Pastor of Northminster Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment, Evergreen Cemetery. SLOAN, James Howard, 78, resident of Tucson for 35 years passed away January 10, 1998. He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Wilson Sloan and father, James Monroe Sloan of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. Survivors include his daughter Camille and his sister, Dorothy Sloan Hart, of Sellersville, Pennsylvania. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Marine Corps. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, January 16, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. at the ADAIR AVALON CHAPEL, 8090 North Northern Avenue. WALP, Garwood ”Woody”, 74, of Continental Ranch and formerly of Sierra Vista, died January 12, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his daughters, Candie (Dave) Hellier of Washington, and Gigi (Ron Engle) Walp of Tucson; and by his granddaughter, Crystal Marie Hellier of Washington. Woody served as an Air Force photographer in Africa and Italy during WWII. After the war he began working as a salesman for the Chase Candy Company in Montana and Wyoming. Woody moved into management and accounting for an agricultural chemical company in the Northwest. It was during this time that he met his wife, Marjorie. In 1961 Woody moved with his family to Sierra Vista, where he began his civil service career from which he retired in 1990. Woody was involved with community affairs all his life. He is a life member of the Elks, Vice President of the Lions Club of Klamath Falls Oregon, member of the Sierra Vista School Board, treasurer of Cochise Chapter, National Military Intelligence Association, member of the Ft. Huachuca Museum Council, non-appropriated fund element, member National Railway Historical Society, member Benson Railway Heritage Foundation, and co-chair Casas Adobes Congregational Church Investments Committee, and active with the Senior Group at Continental Ranch. Memorial Services will be held, Thursday, January 15, at Casas Adobes Congregational Church at 3:00 p.m. Family requests remembrances be made to the American Diabetes Foundation or the American Cancer Society. WEAVER, Charles Perry, 82, of Tucson, died January 12, 1998. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Eleanor Weaver; daughter, Nancy (Gerald) Monsman of Tucson, and three granddaughters, Claire, Cecily and Christina Monsman. Perry came from a distinguished frontier Missouri family. He received his BA and law degrees from the University of Missouri, where he also played varsity football. He was trained as an officer in the USN during WWII at the University of Arizona and served both aboard the destroyer USS Gwynn and as Provo-Marshall in the Philippines. For many years he was a technical sales consultant for Gardner-Denver Corp’s international customers. Perry was integral to the invention of a submarine blast-hole drill rig that was used to build the St. Lawrence Seaway, widen the Panama Canal, and construct deep-water harbors worldwide. He was a member of the Masons and the Tucson Country Club. Funeral Services will be held at St. Phillips in the Hills Episcopal Church, Friday, January 16, 1998 at 4:00 p.m. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1636 N. BASURTO, John ”Johnny” Fernando, 64, of Tucson, passed away January 10, 1998. Devoted husband of Alice; daughters, Sylvia (Frank), Norma (Tudy); sons, Gilbert, Fernando (Laura); sister, Melva; brother, Richard (Dalia); seven grandchildren, Marcos (Angela), Fernando Jr. (April), Michael (Linda), Annette, Monica, Veronica, Roxanne; two great-grandchildren, Michael Jr., Illiana, and two more on the way; numerous nieces and nephews, godchildren, and cousins. Devoted brother-in-law and friend. Mr. Basurto retired from Pima County Transportation Department after 34 years and served in the United States Air Force, Korean War Veteran. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. CANDELARIA, Frances V., 73, of Tucson, passed away January 12, 1998. Survived by daughters, Rita Sanchez, Inez (Richard) Huerta, Mary L. (Gary) Rowell, Susie Sanchez, Rebecca (Manuel) Aranda, and Gina (Jerry) Higginbotham; son, Freddie Cruz Sanchez; sister, Carmen (Henry)Garcia; brother, Manuel (Carmen) Candelaria; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 1998 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY (South Chapel), 240 South Stone Ave. with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Thursday, January 15, 1998 at 10:00 a.m., St. Monica’s Church, 212 W. CARTIN, Dr. Samuel, on January 6, 1998, Dr. Samuel Cartin passed away in Tucson, AZ while in the care of the St. Josephs Hospital Hospice. Dr. Cartin was born in Toledo, Ohio on December 9, 1908. He was graduated from Woodward High School in 1927, attended the University of Toledo for three years and was graduated from The Ohio State College of Dentistry in 1934. He worked at the Dental Dispensary in Rochester, NY fro a year and was the Norfolk, VA County School Dentist until 1936. He received his oral surgery training at Lincoln Hospital in New York City from 1936 to 1938. He practiced oral surgery in Toledo, Ohio until 1942 when he joined the U.S. Army. He returned to Toledo and practiced from 1946 to 1963. When he retired he donated all of his office equipment through Ottawa Hills St. Michael's Church to the Kyosato Educational Experiment Project in Japan and created the Cartin Dental Clinic. During his involvement with dentistry he was a pioneer in the fields of Exodontic and Endodontia and wrote many articles published in Worldwide Dental Journals. He resided in Ottawa Hills from 1954 to 1963. After he and his wife traveled for three years in Europe and North Africa. They returned to live in Tucson, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Ann Cartin of Tucson; step-children, Elizabeth O’Brien of Phoenix and Dr. Daniel Henderson of Rancho Santa Fe, CA and a daughter Barbara Cartin Goldberg of Toledo, Ohio. He is also survived by nine grandchildren. Any remembrances can be made to the Carondelet Foundation Hospice, P.O. Box 13170, Tucson, AZ 85732-3170. At the decedent’s request no services are planned.

DRAHOVZAL, Henrietta ”Buddy”, 72, a long time Tucson resident, died January 11, 1998. She is loved and missed by her husband, Rudy Drahovzal; son, Rudy Jr. and wife Cindy; daughter, Nancy Krieski and husband Jim; grandsons, Aaron and Matt Krieski, Steven Armentrout and wife Teresa, Chett Wearley; and a host of wonderful friends and family members. She lived her life guided by the joy of serving others especially children; those of all ages, as she touched the lives of those around her. She will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, January 14, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at Pantano Christian Church, 10355 E. 29th Street, Tucson, AZ. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to ask that donations be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 40 N. Swan Rd., Tucson, AZ 85711.

JOHNSON George F. Jr., 80, of Tucson, died January 12, 1998. He is survived by wife of 54 years, Ruth Johnson; daughter, Kay (Gary) Harvey of Woodbury, MN; sons, Tom (Margie) Johnson of Tucson, Mike Johnson of Grand Island, NE; and seven grandchildren. Mr. Johnson practiced law in Superior, NE before retiring in Tucson, October 1983. Memorial Service will be Friday, January 16, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with Rev.Barbara Andersen officiating. Arrangements by VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 2545 N. LUGO, Maria L., 85, of Tucson, died January 11, 1998. Survived by her sons, Frank L. (Margarita) Placencia of Mammoth, Henry L. Placencia of Ajo, Socorro L. (Romula) Placencia of Winkelman; daughters, Lucy P. (Ralph) Lucas of Winkelman, Gloria A. Contreras of Tucson; sister, Mercedes Esparza of Winkelman; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces. Services to be held Wednesday, January 14, 1998 in Tucson. NORDMAN, Josephine H., passed away Saturday, January 10, 1998, at the age of 88. She is survived by sisters, Shirley Eastman of Lancaster, CA, Carolyn Rushlow of Niceville, FL; her daughter, Marcia Sanford (Stirling R.) of Tucson; sons, Robert P. Nordman (Donna) of Tucson, and William J. Nordman (Mary) of Berryville, VA; grandchildren, Richard Sanford of Vista, CA, Robert Sanford of Tucson, Stephanie Lynch of Trabuco Canyon, CA, Russell Sanford of Tucson, Denise Koenneker of Tucson, Marcia Croddy of Tucson, William Dornan of Jackson, WY, Mary Jo Mullins of St. Louis; and ten great-grandchildren. Born Josephine Sofia Kirby in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on February 5, 1909. She grew up in Saginaw, MI. She married Robert E. Nordman in 1927 and lived in Michigan until the family moved to Tucson in December of 1944. She raised her family here, taking time during the 1950's to work as a cashier for a local grocer. She was active fin Eastern Star in Michigan and in her earlier years in Tucson. She and her late husband, Bob, enjoyed extended trips to the White Mountains of Arizona and the Sea of Cortez in Mexico where they made numerous friends. She was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, 1050 N. Dodge, Tucson, on Wednesday, January 14, at 3:00 p.m.

O’MALLEY, M. Joseph, age 82, died January 9, 1998. Mr. O’Malley is survived by his wife, Alice V. O’Malley of Tucson; two stepsons, Robert E. Bartke and Richard A. Bartke both of Tucson; three sisters, Catherine Joseph of Virginia, Phyllis Kelley of New Jersey and Eleanor Nasif of Florida. Also surviving are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial Services for Mr. O’Malley will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

SIMONS, Margaret Smith, 96, passed away January 12, 1998. She was born to Stephen D. Smith, M.D. and Annabelle Martin at Hayden, CO on October 3, 1901. She grew up in Cowgill and Columbia, MO and was the oldest living graduate of Christian College at the time of her death. She attended the University of Missouri where she met and married Bernard W. Simons of Trenton, MO. As bride and groom they arrived in Tucson, AZ on Thanksgiving Day in 1924 and immediately became enthusiastic, lifelong Tucsonians. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta, the DAR, and Daughters of the American Colonists. Surviving are children, B.W. Simons, Jr., M.D. and Ralph S. Simons in Tucson, AZ and Suzette Freebairn in Rolling Hills Estates, CA. There are 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The Funeral arrangements are private. The family suggests Memorial donations to the organization of your choice in lieu of flowers. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge (at Speedway).

STOUT, Beryl K., 84, of Tucson, died January 10, 1998. Pre-deceased by son, Lyle. She is survived by husband, Phoney M. Stout of Tucson; children, Barbara (George) Butterfield of St. George, UT, Norma (William) Jones of Dover, DE and Sandra (Stephen) Wright of Tucson; one sister; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren. WEBER, Frieda Ullrich, 91, of Tucson, died December 16, 1997. She is survived by her children, Gretel Paterson of Charlotte, NC, Hans (Lore) Weber of Wappingers Falls, NY, Emil (Harriet) Weber of Summer Duck, VA, and Walter (Marlene) Weber of Tucson; a sister-in-law, Elise of Otterberg, Germany also survives; as well as other nieces and nephews in Germany; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service to celebrate Frieda’s life will be held on Sunday, January 18, 1998 at 3:00 p.m. at the residence of Walt Weber, 8271 Appomattox. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY, 1040 N. BROKAW, William D. ”Bill”, 64, died January 9, 1998. Survived by his wife, Betty of 44 years; daughters, Deborah J. (Leon) Tatro and Vickie B. (Wade) Nelson; grandchildren, Ricky, Brad and Derek Nelson, Shannon, Michael Tatro; brother, Harvey (Bert) Brokaw; sisters, Alice L. Miller, Evelyn M. (Glenn) Pollard, Louise B. (Robert) Schmidt. William owned and operated ”Bills” Auto Body Shop for 23 years. Served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Life member of D.A.V. #18 and V.F.W. #4903 as well as the Legion of Moose #93. Friends may call 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 1998 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd., where Funeral Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 1998, officiating, Pastor Rick Mensing of the Ascension Lutheran Church of which Bill was a longtime member.
