McDONALD, Karen M., Born on November 12, 1951, passed away on December 19, 1997. She will be greatly missed by her beloved family (her loving husband and best friend, Rob; and her cherished children, Christy, 21; Robert, 19; and Stacy, 17). Through the challenges of coping with cancer, Karen continued to inspire those around her (family, friends, and students) with her dignity and strength. The Sahuarita High School mourns the loss of this dedicated, talented, and determined teacher. Her courageous spirit will endure in the hearts of everyone she touched. Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 1997 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Green Valley. A reception for family and friends will be held immediately following the services. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the American Lung Association.

STEVENS, Pauline Gillespie, age 82, died Friday, December 19, 1997. Mrs. Stevens had resided in Arizona for the past 40 years. Her husband, Daniel I. Stevens, preceded her in death in 1989. She is survived by one son, Carlos Woodall (Ingrid) of Florida; one stepson, Robert L. Stevens (Barbara) of Tucson; two stepdaughters, Lois K. Early (Duane) and Judith A. Lane, both of Tucson; five brothers, Richard Gillespie of Phoenix; Clarence Gillespie of California; Paul Gillespie of Kansas; George and John Gillespie, both in Indiana; four sisters, June Bauer of Florida; Phyllis Deal of Phoenix; Marilyn Evans of Prescott; and Sandy Winebrenner of Pine, AZ. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Christine Stevens of Tucson; one grandchild; and six step-grandchildren. Mrs. Stevens was a member of Saguaro Chapter #48 Order of Eastern Star, Amaranth Tucson Court #5; and White Shrine of Jerusalem #2. A Memorial Service will be held on January 3, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, (Speedway at Dodge).

ATHOUGUIA, Shawn Miles, 25, of Charleston, SC, born May 25, 1972, passed away December 15, 1997. Survived by children, Tyler and Baker of Darlington, SC; parents, Buddy and Nelle Athouguia of Tucson; brother, Tony and wife, Bernadette; niece Shelby and nephew, Austin of Tucson; maternal grandmother, Mary Atkinson of Hartsville, SC and paternal grandmother, Juliet Athouguia of Tucson; as well as many other loving relatives. He is deeply loved and will be missed by all. Memorial services to be held at Brown Pennington and Atkins Funeral Home in Hartsville, SC. In lieu of flowers, family asks that contributions be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital c/o Loralei Collier, 1500 N. Camino Mira Flora, Tucson, AZ 85745.

BAILEY, Beryl Ellen, 67, died December 15, 1997. Wife of Dr. Robert B. Bailey; mother of Jean Copple of Tempe, AZ, Steve Dorries of Yuma, AZ, Matthew Bailey of Tucson, AZ, Paul Bailey of Yuma, AZ; grandmother of Steven Dorries; sister of Jack Moody of Dragoon, AZ, Willy Condry of OR, Connie Herrill of Santa Barbara, CA. BURGESS, Thomas G., 76, of Mesa, AZ, died December 18, 1997. Thomas was born in Burley, Idaho. Thomas lived in the Tucson, AZ area for twenty-five years before moving to Mesa. He was a College Professor and served in the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Ann; daughter, Carol Ann Burgess; son, Gerald Alan; two sisters, Lariene Rogers and Berta Johnson; two brothers, Roger and George; and four grandchildren. There will be no Funeral Services. Arrangements by WYMAN CREMATION & BURIAL CHAPEL, 115 S. Country Club Drive, Mesa, AZ.

COHEN, Jules E., 84, died December 19, 1997. Husband of Ronnie R. Cohen of Tucson; father of Neil L. (Carol) Cohen of Brooklyn, NY and Cynthia Steinmetz of Tucson; brother of Ceil Berg of Long Island, NY; grandfather of Richard Cohen, Robin Eisenberg, and Marc Cohen; great grandchild, Jordan D. Eisenberg also survive. He was a member of Congregation Anshei Israel. Funeral Service 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 22, 1997, at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway with Rabbi Arthur R. Oleiski and Cantor Ivor Lichterman officiating. Interment will be private.

CONOVER, M. Jane, 72, of Marana, died December 17, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin. Survivors include her children, John (Melinda), Vickie Smith and Greg Dewitt, Jane Lanham, and David; grandchildren, Darryl, Joe (Becky), Shannon, Melissa, Ed (Melanie), Carrie, Wes and Amanda; and one great-grandson, Heath; one sister, Virginia Ritchie; and two brothers, Frank and Clessie Ritchie. Jane retired from Hughes Aircraft in 1986 after 14 years of service. Friends may call at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. CUESTA, Anselmo E., 64, of Hermosillo, Son. Mexico, died Thursday, December 18, 1997. Survived by his wife, Francisca U. Cuesta; sons, Anselmo, Jaime, Javier, Ruben Cuesta; daughter, Maria Angelica Cuesta; and his four grandchildren, Jaime, Rene, Torres, Estevan Valtierra and Leah Paige Cuesta. Services, 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 22, 1997 at St. Johns Catholic Church. There will be a Visitation prior to Service at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. GARABED, Jack K., 89, pioneer Tucsonian since 1930. Past away Monday, December 15, 1997. Beloved husband of Charlotte Garabed; devoted and loving father of daughters, Jackie Anderson of Los Angeles, Linda Bacher of Mesa, and Portia McGrew of Los Angeles; loving grandfather of Eric Anderson of Tucson, and Tawni Bacher of Mesa. Jack was a past master of the Masonic Lodge #4 and a life time member of the Tucson Elk’s Club. Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 22, at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, .You were a pillar of strength to all of us. We love you and you will be greatly missed.

MAXFIELD, Frank M., 78, of Tucson died December 17, 1997.
MAXFIELD, Theresa, 73, of Tucson died September 15, 1995.
Survived by son, Frank D. Maxfield; daughter, Theresa Jean Wooden; and six grandchildren. Mr. Maxfield is also survived by a brother, Joseph. Memorial Services will be held at HEATHER MORTUARY, 1040 N. Columbus Blvd. (at Speedway), on Saturday, December 20, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Les Plattner officiating. STALKER, Roderick Bruce; born July 20, 1939 in Rochester, NY, died December 13, 1997 in Tucson. Survived by sister, Gail (Richard) Ophardt; children, Teresa (Larry) Massingill, Laura (Joaquin) Robles, Harold ”Butch” Stalker, Elizabeth (Luke) Gilligan; and eight grandchildren. Memorial service at Dove of Peace Lutheran Church, Monday December 22 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

JASON, Maria D., 39, went to join her daughter, Genevieve, December 16, 1997. Dorothy B. Kaufman, died December 15, 1997. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, August 4, 1909 to Susie and John Brennan. She is survived by daughter, Barbara (Daniel) Beamer; son, Richard (Beverly) Kaufman; sister, Marjorie (Ellis) DeCann; brother, David (Virginia) Brennan and numerous nieces and a nephew. She was married to Charles Kaufman who preceded her in death. Grandchildren include Erik and Jason and Elizabeth and Benjamin. She graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan with an EDd. and worked as a commercial educator, counselor and educational psychologist in Michigan. She served in World War II as a Lieutenant J.G. in the Navy stationed at Treasure Island, San Francisco. She was also a recipient of a Fulbright Scholar Award to Denmark in 1952. During her retirement in California and Tucson she enjoyed freelance writing and was active in the Desert Waves and the Unitarian Church. She will be missed by family and numerous friends. Memorial Service will be scheduled inFebruary. Donations in Dorothy’s name may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, 130 Prospect St., Cambridge, Mass. 02139-1845.

PETTY, Margaret B., 85, of Tucson, died December 17, 1997. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Samuel; brother, Jim (Rose) Bean of Olympia, WA; niece, Betty (Laurie) Anderson of Canada and many other nieces and nephews. Grandfather of Kristin and Derek both of Tucson. Brother of George Rahn of Columbia, IL and Esther Waage of Waterloo, IL. Memorial Service 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 20, 1997 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 824 N. 2nd Ave. Mr. Rahn was a member of V.F.W. in Millstadt, IL, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. SMITH, Fronia J., age 88, a Tucson resident since 1940, passed away December 16, 1997. Born June 11, 1909 in Hughs Springs, TX. She is survived by her brother, Hosea (Blanche) Johnson of Tucson; nephews, Percell (Mae) Johnson of Phoenix and Donald (Patricia) Johnson of California; niece, Sue (Jim) Beidleman of Los Angeles, CA; cousin, Frankie McDemmons of Tucson; and a host of relatives and friends. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 20, 1997 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave. Rev. Orlice Williams officiating. Friends may visit one hour prior to Service. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery.

SWATSWORTH, Gordon H., 85, of Tucson, died December 17, 1997. Husband of Venola P.; father of Kathleen S. Elliston; four grandchildren, Christina, Gordon, Frank, and Caroline Dobell all of Tucson; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; uncle of Jack C. Swatsworth of Mendham, NJ. WATERS, Harold R., age 84, died December 17, 1997. He was preceded in death by his wife Merle. He is survived by sons, Ray and Eldon; cousins, Jean Korner and sister, Julia Clayton. He retired after more than 30 years civil service in the Air Force as a Quality Control Inspector. He served with The Fifth Army Signal Corps during World War II. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 20, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Church United Methodist, 655 N. Craycroft in the Chapel.

Mrs. Davenport served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. She served as a board member of WIBC for 12 years and then served as president 1996-1997.
