Sebastian Temple
HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
Noted songwriter, musician and author, went to be with his Lord, Wednesday, December 10, 1997, at the age of 70. Born in South Africa, Sebastian’s mother died when he was only four years old. Due to difficult conditions at home, he left to make his own way at the age of 16. Soon after leaving his grandparent’s house, he wrote his first book, and became the immediate ‘toast of Johannesburg’. Sebastian longed to find a deep relationship with God (which he had not found with his rigid upbringing), so he embarked on a long journey in search of God which led him to India where he learned to meditate, to England and finally to the U.S. at the age of 33. He began writing music while he was journeying. His first songs were incorporated into the record ”Africa Belongs to the Lion” which became quite popular. He became a Catholic convert after seeing the peace of God in the face of a holy priest. He had a passion for God and music which led him to write over 1000 songs, translated and sung around the world. Best known favorites include TAKE MY HANDS, ALL THAT I AM, and THE PEACE PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS, which has become the theme song of reconciliation of Northern Ireland and which was sung at the funeral of Princess Diana. Sebastian gave concerts and seminars around the world. Much of what he taught were later incorporated into several books dealing with forgiveness, finding yourself and meditation. Sebastian was also a prolific writer of poetry. Income from his many talents were channeled into a non-profit organization called Mission H.E.L.P. to aid families in Mexico and the U.S. In addition, he was tireless in collecting used clothing and taking it to villages in Mexico to help those without. He also raised money and built houses for the poorest of the poor in Mexico and in one town paid for and worked hard helping bring water to the local people. Mission H.E.L.P. is still in operation. Sebastian retired to Tucson, AZ in 1990. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 5:30 p.m., Monday, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1800 Camino Pio Decimo, ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, in charge of funeral arrangements.
