Marie E. Wicks
A long time Tucson resident, died peacefully at her home, Thanksgiving morning. She and her identical twin were born in Factoryville, PA. They moved to Lewis, IA and later to Payette, ID. Marie and Franklin E. Wicks married in December 1943 at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base where Frank was stationed. WWII caused them to be apart for many months while Frank flew in the European Theater. They continued their lives together after the war. They began their family and moved often with the Air Force, stationed in Sacramento, Tampa, Phoenix, Tucson and San Antonio.
Burdened by the tragic aircraft mishap resulting in the death of her husband, Frank, in 1952, Marie returned to Tucson after the birth of their third son. A pillar of inner strength, she raised her three sons, always supportive, always sacrificing to ensure their happiness. She was very proud of her sons.
In 1956, Marie met Fred W. Stang, her companion for the next 40 years. She began working at Tucson Warehouse and Transfer and later at City Van. In 1973, Marie and Fred pooled their resources and bought Ralph’s Transfer. Their dedication to hard work guaranteed their success. Over the years, they earned the coveted North American Van Lines ‘Commitment to Excellence Award nine times, more than any other North American Van Lines agent in the country. Marie and Fred quietly supported many local activities, including the Community Food Bank, Junior League of Tucson, the Boy Scouts, Special Olympics and numerous other causes. Upon Fred’s death in 1996, Marie assumed responsibility for the corporation as CEO and president. She continued to work until a few months before her death.
Marie was a very private person but she had many friends. Her last words to her sister were, ”I should say goodbye to so many people, but I’m just too tired.” She promised to be a star in the northern skies with a special twinkle for those she loved.
Marie was preceded in death by the two men in her life, her husband, Franklin E. Wicks and Fred W. Stang.
Her three sons, Randall E. (Suzi) Wicks, Dr. Roland E. Wicks and Franklin R. (Connie) Wicks all of Tucson, survive her. Also surviving are her identical twin, Mrs. Lyle E. Lingel; two nephews, Rick (Joyce) Lingel and Terry (Cindy) Lingel of Tucson and her brother, Elmon R. (Barbara) Cobb of Galva, KS. She had six grandchildren, including Robbie and Ryan Wicks of Tucson.
At Mom’s request, there will be no memorial service. Donations in her name to the charity of your choice are requested in lieu of flowers. Arrangements by WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway, 881-0338.
