Mary Louise Harris
April 19, 1948 to November 22, 1997
My brilliant, beautiful, passionate, intense and complicated mother was killed early Saturday morning at the age of 49 in a one-car accident north of Sonoita on State Route 83. Her constant companion, the beloved Newfoundland Aircraft Carrier, survived the crash. Her family and network of U.S. and international friends deeply mourn this unexpected and tragic loss; we all will forever remember this charismatic woman in our hearts. Her death has left an irreplaceable void in our lives. Mary Lou was one of four girls born to V.V. and Jane Harris of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but she became a lifelong resident of Arizona after her family moved to Tucson in 1962. In 1966 she graduated from Rincon High School, then earned a Bachelor of Arts with highest honors in English from the University of Arizona in 1975, and went on to get a Juris Doctorate from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1978. From the beginning of her legal career and throughout her life, M.L. championed the uncelebre causes of the disenfranchised and defenseless. Upon her graduation from law school, she was awarded a regional Heber Smith Fellowship and spent a year working in a poverty law center in Albany, New York, before returning to practice in Tucson. In 1980, she co-authored Arizona’s earliest domestic violence legislation, and from 1980 to 1983 not only did she personally care for many of the Salvadoran refugee survivors of the deadly crossing through the Organ Pipe National Monument, but she also advocated broadening the political protections afforded political refugees. In 1993, Mary Lou’s health precipitated an early retirement from the practice of law, but she immediately turned the focus of her considerable talents to the town of Patagonia in Southern Arizona. Upon moving from Tucson to Patagonia, she founded her treasured organic garlic and herbs company, the Patagonia Garlic Works. As sole proprietress, she started ”The Works” as a backyard experiment that, under her loving and watchful eye, grew into a thriving business. With ”Crafty” at her side this past September, her garlic, herbs and specialty crafts captured several first place ribbons at the Santa Cruz County Fair. She also took enormous pleasure in creating her weekly newspaper column, ”A Garden Diary”, for the Sonoita Weekly Bulletin. Her articles chronicled a myriad of horticulture concerns, from her hilarious to-the-death battles with the ever-present gopher menace to her tips for protecting her prized Yellow Boy tomato crops from pernicious insects. She used her garden as a metaphor for the inevitable stages of human existence and her deliberate words celebrated the joy of new beginnings and eased the suffering of painful endings. Besides her brilliant gift with words, she was a voracious reader and an accomplished guitarist with a beautiful voice. Music was inextricably woven with her spirit. Her love affair with J.S. Bach was a constant in her life, not to be diminished by her devotion to the Rolling Stones, Jackson Browne and Neil Young. She also cherished several memorable holidays to Winster, a small village in England, where she captured the solemn beauty of the rugged English countryside in black and white photographs and wrote beautiful poetry in the tiny Spook Cottage. Family and friends are invited to share memories and condolences from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 1997, at 1402 East Calle Mariposa in Tucson. The memorial service will be at Cady Hall in the Patagonia Library (346 Dusquesne) at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, 1997. The reception will follow at Mary Lou’s home nearby. Written directions to both addresses are available at the Rincon Market, Sixth Street and Tucson Blvd. Please do not call. Condolences may be sent to her daughter at 635 Camino Arviso, Rio Rico, AZ 85648. In lieu of flowers we request donations in her name to the Friends of the Patagonia Library. On my eighteenth birthday she wrote to me that ”having kids is probably the only form of immortality most of us will have or understand during our conscious lives.” Twelve years later, her devastated child finds some comfort in this wisdom, recognizing that she lives on in her daughter and grandchildren. Mary Lou Harris is survived by her only daughter, Kimberly Harris Ortiz; her adored nineteen month-old twin grandchildren, Alexandra and Cordero; and her three sisters, Malinda (Bill) Harris-Silk of Oklahoma City, OK; Rebecca (Ford) Gibson of Shreveport, LA, and Judy (Don) Garrett of Lawton, OK. We love you, Mom.
