Born in New York City, Mary Ann was the beloved wife of David Weisz; and is survived by loving family; her children, Helaine Pilsner of Tucson, and Bernard Weisz of Hollywood, FL; grandchildren, David and Michael Weisz; sisters, Linda Spatz, Ruth Unger, and Elaine Warner. ATKINSON, Earl Herring, 65, of Tucson, passed away on Monday, November 24, 1997. A native Californian, Earl is survived by his wife of 45 years, Julia C. Atkinson of Tucson; sons, Steven Atkinson of Santa Clara, CA, David Atkinson (and wife Donna) of Moscow, ID, John Atkinson of San Mateo, CA, and daughter, Susan Atkinson of San Jose, CA; brothers, Ray Atkinson of San Mateo, CA and Duane Atkinson of Burlingame, CA, and sister, Lois Atkinson of Sonoma, CA; mother-in-law, Nina Clarkson of Carmichael, CA, and grandchildren, Robert, Michael, and Christa Atkinson of Moscow, ID. JOHNSON, Elizabeth Jean ‘Betty’, (nee: Baker), 78, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 22, 1997 after a long illness. Betty was a resident of Tucson for the past 15 years, enjoying the sunshine and the mountains. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband, Bob. She was an active member of the P.E.O. Surviving Betty are her loving husband, Robert D. Johnson; her son, Robert L. (Denise) Johnson; her daughter, Jill A. (David) Gavigan; three granddaughters, Laura Johnson, Amy Arzikovic, and Jennifer Johnson; and two grandsons, Mark Tluszcz and Steve Tluszcz. Betty was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by all. She was preceded in death by two sons, Billy and Tommy, and her brother, Robert Baker. Dorothy Dix Balin, 76, of Tucson, born May 23, 1921 in Janesville, WI, passed away November 23, 1997 after a long battle with congestive heart failure. Preceded in death by her son, Robert, three months old in 1942 and by her ex-husband, James Fosnot. Survived by her beloved husband, Henry; sons, Donald Fosnot of Batavia, IL and Richard Fosnot of Portage, WI and her brother Donald Dix of Madison, WI, and her loving grandchildren, Dennis, Timothy, Kenneth, Rachel, Rebecca, and Matthew. Dorothy worked in a variety of occupations prior to becoming conference secretary to Credit Union International of Madison, WI. She relocated to Tucson in 1970, then became Executive Conference Secretary to The Arizona State Board of Regents and married Henry Balin. She was a loving wife and mother and ”My Best Friend”. Stewart R. Barr, 75, of Tucson, died November 21, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Myra; children, Nancy (Robert), Stewart (Rhonda), and Charles (Lavonne); as well as four grandchildren. CREMEAN, Shirley F., of Tucson, made her transition on November 23, 1997. Survivors include her six children; seven grandchildren; and one sister. Shirley spent her years in Tucson as a registered nurse and grapho-analyst. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL.
FARNEY, Richard David, was born on October 2, 1924 in Maywood, IL. He served in the Navy during WWII and the Korean War and was employed by the Bell System for over 35 years starting with Illinois Bell Telephone Company and after moving to Tucson in 1954, with Mountain States Bell. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; and many nieces and nephews. He died peacefully on November 23 after a short, but courageous battle with lung cancer. An avid U of A fan for 40 years, one of his parting sentiments was ”Go Cats!” Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd.
Patsy M. Fiandaca Jr., born May 2, 1912 in Hecla, PA, died November 23, 1997. Survived by his son, Thomas O. Fiandaca; daughter, Cathy Fiandaca and her daughters, Lauren and Jennifer; daughter, Patricia Davis and her sons, Kevin and Bryan; sisters, Maria Jordan, Josephine Molinari and Rose M. Harbour and brother, Orland Fiandaca. He was preceded in death by brother, Samuel Fiandaca and sisters, Augustine Fiandaca and Elizabeth Benigno. P.M. Fiandaca received a degree in Medicine from W.Virginia University in 1935 and in 1938, he received an M.D. Degree from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He was commissioned 1st Lt. in the Reserve Corps. for the U.S. Army and was called to active duty in 1941. He served in the African, Asian and European Theatres and on U.S. Army Hospital Ships. After separation February 1946 with the Rank of Col., he was employed by the V.A. He was recalled to active duty July of 1955 as Division Artillery Surgeon, 2nd Armored Division and served at several posts. He retired as Col. July 1966 at which time he was appointed by President Johnson as Medical member on the Board of Veterans appeals until March of 1980. He was the recipient of eight Battle and Service Medals and four Service Bars. Col. Fiandaca was a member of various organizations and was a loving person who served family and country in an exemplary manner. Friends may visit from 2:30 p.m. until service time at 3:00 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. on November 26, 1997 with full military honors by Davis Monthan Color Guard.
MCDONALD, Lawrence Wesley ‘Larry’, Jr., 58, of Tucson, passed away November 22, 1997. Survived by wife of 40 years, Wanda J. McDonald; sons, Ronald J. McDonald and Lawrence Wesley McDonald, III both of Tucson; grandchildren, Gared McDonald, Justin McDonald, Monique McDonald all of Tucson, Loren Ashley McDonald of Yuma, AZ; brothers, Tommy McDonald and Ernest McDonald both of Stone Mountain, GA, John McDonald of Conyers, GA; sisters, Jean Pless and Nancy McDonald, both of Eatonton, GA; numerous nephews and nieces. Mr. McDonald was a former General Manager for Jim Click Ford and later owned and operated the former Bananza Trading Enterprises. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. MOORE, Edgar W., 67, passed away November 20, 1997 in Tucson, AZ. Survived by wife, Lorene Moore; one stepdaughter, Linda Kelley; one stepson, Lawrence Walther; two brothers, Albert Moore and James Moore; and four granddaughters. Mr. Moore was an Associate Professor of History from 1966-1990 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and retired as an Emeritus Professor of History. Professor Moore was a charter member of Phi Alpha Theta, Honorary National History Society founding member IUP Latin American Studies Program, developed the University’s first courses on Native Americans. Presented scholarly papers at the Great Lakes History Conference, the Society for Americans Baseball Research, and the History Forum of Duquesne University. His research on missionary activity among the Navaho was published in the scholarly journal Presbyterian History. He was a pioneer in presenting topics on Native Americans and the American West in the popular culture mode, featuring the films of John Wayne and Gary Cooper. PAUL-POTTER, Josie, 43, of Tucson, died Friday, November 21, 1997. RAWLINSON, John F., 53, died November 21, 1997, of a heart condition. He leaves his longtime friend and partner, Judy Donovan and her daughter Kate. He was a warm-hearted and well-loved friend and co-worker to many. He was a newspaper reporter for The Arizona Daily Star for many years and in 1976 also worked as a member of a national investigative team that produced a series of articles on corruption in Arizona. Survivors include aunt, Jane Williams and cousin, Nancy Adams, both of Orange City, FL; cousin Laurie Mrusek of Pittsburgh, PA and cousin Gary Rawlinson of Norman, OK.Contributions can be made in John’s name to Casa de los Ninos and the Humane Society of Tucson.
