Elizabeth (Betty) Kurtz Richardson
October 16, 1920 – March 15, 1998
Betty Kurtz Richardson was born in Peoria, Arizona, October 16, 1920 to Frank Kurtz and Addie Gillett Kurtz, daughter of Charles E. Gillett, an Arizona pioneer preacher. Betty graduated from Peoria High School, LaVerne College in LaVerne, California, and the University of Arizona and taught in California and Arizona schools (Mayer, Prescott, Willcox and Tucson – Rogers and White Schools). She served as president of Alpha Alpha chapter of Pi Lambda Theta, International Honor Society and Professional Association in Education; Xi chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, International Honor Society for Women in Education; Pima County Retired Teachers and St. Mark’s United Methodist Women and as district treasurer for United Methodist Women. She also taught Sunday School classes in the Willcox and St. Mark’s United Methodist Churches.
She was married to Merlyn L. Richardson of Wiggins, Colorado for over 50 years before he died in 1994. They lived in San Francisco; New York City and Yuma, Dewey, Cherry Creek, Prescott, Willcox and Tucson, Arizona. Their children are Judith Richardson, Director of the Desert Dove School of Music and Marana District music teacher; Joel Richardson (Debbie) of Naperville, Illinois, a research engineer with Amoco; (grandchildren, Jill and Adam Richardson) - Jon Richardson (Jacinta Hart) of West Branch, Iowa, the town librarian of West Branch, Iowa; (grandchildren, Elizabeth and Raymond Richardson-Hart) –Jon and Jacinta formerly taught at Nogales High School); and Eileen Richardson who predeceased her. She is also survived by her sisters, Jean Gordon (Bob), of Prescott, AZ, Kathryn McCallus, of Van Nuys, CA; her brother, Steve Kurtz of Sarasota, FL and nieces and a nephew.
In her retirement years, Betty again began writing poetry and meditation which she self-published as books and stationary products of the Desert Haiku Correspondence Facilitator company which she founded.
Betty’s memorial service will be at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 1431 W. Magee Rd., Sunday, March 22, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers should be sent to the American Cancer Society and to Parkinson’s research associations, the St. Mark’s organ fund, or to favorite charities.
RIOS, Ray R., 73, of Tucson, passed away March 16, 1998. Preceded in death by parents, Eugenio and Carmen Rios; brothers, Tony, Tommie, Rudy, Eugenio. SCHAUM, Louis John, Sr., age 67 of Tucson, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998. A native of Pittsburgh, PA. He and his family moved to Tucson in 1971 from Maryland. Mr. Schaum was retired from the U.S. Army with 22 years of service. After military retirement he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 20 years. Mr. Schaum and his family traveled extensively during his military career which spanned the Korean Conflict as well as the Vietnam War. He enjoyed his family, life and was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan. Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Dolores; sons, Louis J. (Maria) Schaum, Jr. and Leonard (Teri); daughter, Sharon Schaum; three brothers; Leo, Donald (Margaret), Ronald (Joan); one sister; Delores Mackey; grandchildren, Laura, Adrianna and Louis J. SMAIL, Ralph William, 86, of Tucson, was called home Monday, March 16, 1998. Mr. Smail is survived by his wife of 50 years, Flora Belle; daughters, Estella Jane (Ned) Brown, Violet May (Richard) Reaser, both of Ohio, Carolyn June Bediant of Florida, Geraldine Marie Averill of CA; son, Richard Messenger of Tucson; sister, Lila Dean Shorts of Tucson; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Mildred Irene (nee) O’Donald Webb, 85, of Tucson, passed away March 15, 1998. Born in Lakeview, Hall County, Texas, September 12, 1912, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, L.D. Webb in 1981. In 1921, she traveled by covered wagon to homestead outside of Canyon, Texas and was raised and educated there. At age 18 she attended West Texas State Teacher’s College. In 1937 she was married and relocated to Ash Fork, AZ and in 1947 settled in Tucson where they lived on a farm on East River Road for many years while raising their family. She is survived by her children, Lew Webb (Pat), Mike Webb (Mary), Alice Vorholzer (Bob), Marie Larson (Rick), all of Tucson, Don Webb (Maren) of Happy Jack, AZ and Doug Webb (Jan) of Ann Arbor, MI. She will also be dearly missed by 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; her sister, Marie Breithing (Eston) of Tulia, TX; her brother, Cecil O’Donald of Canyon, TX and also numerous nieces and nephews and other family. MANN, Retha Mae, 90, passed away peacefully on March 12, 1998. She was born on May 10, 1907 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Retha Mae was the oldest of five children born to Rone and Mollie (Hammondtree) Copeland (both deceased); brothers and sisters, Cicero Copeland (deceased), Gladys Marshall (Duncan, AZ), Max Copeland (deceased) and Paul Copeland (Duncan, AZ). She only completed the 6th grade; as girls were not supposed to be educated; during those times. She pushed her own children and grandchildren to excel in the opportunity to further their own education. Retha married James Valentine Segraves (deceased) and had three children, Mollie Gertrude Zumwalt (San Diego, CA), John Charles Segraves (deceased), wife, Marion, Tucson, AZ and James Quillon Segraves, wife, Cecilia L. Segraves (Duncan, AZ). After the death of her husband, Retha remarried to Charles Mann (deceased) of Morenci, AZ and later moved to Duncan, Arizona where she most recently made her home. Nine days prior to her passing, she was moved to Santa Rosa Care Center, Tucson, AZ.”Granny Mann” also leaves behind 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Her life long lesson to each of her grandchildren was ”There ain’t nothing in this whole world like family.” She was loved by everyone who ever met her and will be missed by all. She will be laid to rest on March 21, 1998, 11:00 a.m., in the Duncan Valley Cemetery. As per her final request, a graveside service will be celebrated. Officiating will be Minister Donald G. Clara Roseboro Salvatierra, a native Tucsonan, died today after a brief illness. She was 79. ( Born October 22, 1918).
Was the wife of Richard Salvatierra, a retired U.S. Foreign Service Officer and currently an international affairs columnist for the Tucson citizen. They had been married 56 years. Clara had five children, including two sets of twins.
She had traveled extensively with her husband, to more than 60 countries.
She was a graduate of Tucson High, and over the years took occasional courses at the University of Arizona. She was (as then called) the Spanish-American Rodeo Queen in 1940.
Following her husband’s retirement, she spent approximately 20 years as a Spanish interpreter volunteer at the University Medical Center, until a stroke in May, 1994.
She was a founding member of a local civic group–with former High School classmates–called the Club Recuerdo.
She was a member of the Santa Cruz Church Restoration Committee, joining in the effort after the church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1944.
Besides travel, her hobbies included gardening and corresponding with friends she had made during overseas residence.
For several years prior to her marriage she was employed by the old Jacomes Department Store.
Survivors, besides her husband, include a son, Richard D. of Bethesda, MD, George of Arlington, VA; a daughter, Yolanda Hill of Scottsdale, AZ; Cristina Lowe of Lake Forest, IL, and Maria Elena Rodriguez of Phoenix. Also, a brother, Joseph of Tucson.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday morning at Santa Cruz Catholic Church, 1220 S. 6th Ave., with Rosary at 9:00 a.m. and Services at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery.
