Born Aug. 12, 1923, in Yuma, he was retired from the U.S. Navy.
A wake will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a rosary at 7 p.m., at Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Johnson Mortuary Chapel, with burial following at Desert Lawn.

Born Jan. 16, 1954, in Yuma, he was the owner and operator of a radiator shop.

Robert Angulo Mendez
Robert A. Mendez, 62, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on April 2, 2003. “Bobby” was a Yuma native born in No Mans Land, Arizona on August 10, 1940. He was retired from Pepsi after 40 years of hard work, and was involved in forming the Yuma Boxing Club in the early 1970’s.
He is survived by his wife Lidia of 43 years; sons Robert Jr. (Chu-Chu), Angel (Lisa) and Michael (Mylo); grandsons Robert III, Anthony, David, Gregory and Niko; granddaughters Alexis and Jaylee; brothers Joe (Mary), Frank and Mike; sisters Corina Bohanon, Francis Lagunas, Clara Bohanon (Larry Sr.), Mary Gonzales (Chon), Ramona Gastelum (Louis) and many loving nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother Teresa Mendez; father Frank Mendez; sisters Dora Gonzales and Guadalupe Ortega.
We will love you always, and will see you again in heaven.
Pallbearers are Robert Mendez Jr., Angel Mendez, Michael Mendez, Robert Mendez III, Anthony Mendez, David Mendez, Joe Mendez Sr. and Frank Mendez Sr. Honorary pallbearers are Chon Gonzales, Larry Bohanon Sr., Louis Gastelum, Claudio Canedo, Mike Mendez, Gregory Mendez and Niko Mendez.
The wake will be Sunday, April 6, 2003 at Johnson Mortuary from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be on Monday, April 7, 2003 at Immaculate Conception Church beginning at 9:00 am.

Alfonso Baker
Alfonso Baker, 78, of Yuma, died April 1, 2003, at Yuma Regional Medical Center.
Born July 27, 1924, in Wellton, he was a meat cutter and was retired from the U.S. Navy.
A wake will take place today from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., at Yuma Mortuary.
A mass will be held 9 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission, with burial following at Desert Lawn.
Alfonso Baker
Al passed away April 1, 2003, at Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma. He was born July 27, 1924 in Wellton (Calford), Arizona, to Albert and Frances Baker.
Al was in the U.S. Navy from September 1941 to December 1945, when he was honorably discharged. During this time he proudly served on the USS Guadalupe. He and his wife Mary attended many of the USS Guadalupe reunions. Al had many special relationships with his fellow comrades.
Al worked at the U.S.M.C. Commissary. He retired after 30 years of service, in 1988.
Al was a member of the Eagles, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post #19 of which he had earned his 50 year certificate.
Al’s biggest attribute to life was his love for his faith, family and friends. He never met a stranger, he loved everyone and everyone loved him. Al enjoyed the outdoors in the Yuma deserts and was always ready to go camping or out for a daily jaunt with his family. Al was very knowledgeable of the history in the Yuma County area and was always eager to share it with anyone who showed interest. His favorite was Baker’s Tanks information, as he grew up in this area and knew the lore from his ancestors first hand.
Al is survived by his loving wife of five years, Mary Montana Baker; his daughters Jennette Solo (A.J. Underwood) and Elizabeth “Skeeter” (Manuel) Balli; stepchildren William P. (Litzalli) Yoakum, Maryann Moreno (Javier Sardina), James J. (Gloria) Yoakum and Phyllis Yoakum (Joey Martinez); brother Edward (Sonny) Baker; 19 grandchildren; two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends of which will greatly miss him.
Pallbearers are Manuel Balli, Christopher Balli, Bobby Baker, A.J. Underwood, Joey Martinez and Jimmy Yoakum.
Honorary Pallbearers are Bobby Sanchez, Anthony Espino and Joe Sanchez.
Viewing will be at Yuma Mortuary on Friday, April 4, 2003 at 4:00 pm, with the Rosary at 7:00 pm.
Services are at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 417 S. 15th Ave., Yuma at 9:00 am on Saturday April 5, 2003.
Hattie M. Gentry
Hattie M. Gentry, 86, passed away March 30, 2003 in Yuma. She was born December 27, 1916 in Simpson, Kansas. Hattie was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Russell Gentry, of Yuma; son and daughter-in-law, Vernon and Barbara Gentry of Orangevale, California; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and George Sharp of Salem, Oregon; daughter and son-in-lawKathy and Clayton Roth of Albany, Oregon; 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Hattie was preceded in death by her son, Gary Gentry.
There will be a private internment, with Hattie’s final resting place being Desert Lawn Memorial Park.
Valentino Steve Romero
Valentino Steve Romero, 67, passed away April 1, 2003 in Yuma. He was born May 21, 1935 in Wellton, Arizona. Val worked for the Wellton Mohawk Irrigation District as a Lineman/Serviceman for 44 years before retiring.
Val is survived by his wife, Aurelia “Willie” of the home; son, Steve Romero of Santa Ana, California; daughter, Valerie Jo (Joe) Jimenez of Wellton; son, Nick (Peggy) Romero of Wellton; sisters, Virginia (Frank) Rodriguez, Alice Romero, Pauline Romero, all of Tucson, Arizona, and Josephine (Valerio) Campos of Ontario, California; grandchildren, Roxanne, Stephanie, Joseph Valentino, Jennifer, Kearston, all of Wellton, and Barbie, stationed in Italy; three great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be 5:00-9:00 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2003 at Kammann Mortuary, with Memorial at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Scott Ferris will be officiating. Val’s final resting place will be on the Tohono O’Odahm Reservation in Sells, Arizona.Pallbearers will include Jack Caratachea, Steve Romero, Nick Romero, Joe Jimenez, Mark and Frank Rodriguez. Honorary bearers are Archie Burgett, Frank Baughn, Gary Langford, Fermin Ruiz, Herb Guenther, Richard Leyva, Greg Wilhite, David Short, Richard Limon, Gabriel Jim, and Roger Rinehart.
Val is leaving behind many friends who will miss him dearly.
