BONESTEEL, George A., 77, died February 19, 1998. BULLINGTON, Bruce E., 52, of Tucson, passed away February 15, 1998. Helen L. Calder, age 91, died on February 14, 1998 at Tucson General Hospital. Mrs. Calder was born to Hans and Ida Jacobson on March 31, 1906 in Rock Rapids, Iowa. She was married to Frank Calder in 1939, and they came to Tucson in 1953. Mrs. Calder is preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Calder; daughter, Gwendolyn Carroll Chesher and son-in-law, Leslie Chesher. She is survived by granddaughters, Patty Edmonson, Jackie Mashburn (John), and Kathy Varela (Albert); grandchildren, Erin Edmonson, Janelle and Jacob Mashburn, Michael, Marshall and Margo Varela. She was a gentle soul who touched our lives with unconditional love all of her life. She will be missed by all that knew her. LEAVELL, Maria Guadalupe, 94, passed away in Tucson on February 17, 1998 following a brief illness. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Leon Leavell, of Tucson, her four children, Ruth Burns and James E. McLellan of Tucson, Stephen L. Leavell of Alamo, CA, and Rena Jean Rogers of La Jara, CO. Also, there are sixteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends. Maria was born in Tepatitlan, Jalisco, Mexico. She is the youngest of fifteen children born to Leonidas Martin del Campo and Jesus Jauregui. She came to the U.S. in 1918 and lived in Texas, Arizona and California. She loved visiting with family and friends. With her husband, she enjoyed traveling in the states and abroad. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her. Viewing will be on Friday, February 20, 1998 from 5 to 8PM at East Lawn Palms Mortuary. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 21, 1998, at 1:30PM, in the Bonanza Chapel in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 700 N. Bonanza. Interment will follow services at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Rd. As a devoted wife, mother and friend, she was a shining example to all who knew her and of a life well lived. Elizabeth Hack Miller ”Liz/Libby” Scotney, 75, a resident of Tucson since 1958, passed away peacefully in her sleep after a brief illness on February 15, 1998. The daughter of James and Ruth Hack, Liz was born on July 8, 1922, and raised in Peoria, IL. Survived by four loving children, her daughters, Christine Loidolt, Laguna Beach, CA, Melissa (Gregory) Murphy, Sands Point, NY, Abigail (Stanley) Johnson, Durango, CO; her son, Sherman R. ”Minger” Miller, 4th (Mary Sullivan), Denver, CO; her beloved grandchildren, Shane, Travis and Bryce Loidolt, Erin Elizabeth Murphy, Sherman R. ”Buzz” 5th and Ralsey Ann Miller. She was pre-deceased by her first husband, Sherman R. Miller, 3rd, former Head of the UA Journalism Department; her granddaughter, Shanna Elizabeth Chapman, daughter of Abigail, and son-in-law Lawrence ”Larry” Loidolt, husband of Christine. Liz graduated from Peoria High School in 1940, and returned to attend her 50th Reunion in May, 1990. She was an honors graduate of the U of A, class of 1944. Because of her high academic standing and language skills, she was recruited to work in Washington, DC as a cryptanalyst for the military during the final years of World War II. After the war, she moved to New York City to work at REDBOOK Magazine writing educational advertising. She met her future husband, Sherman in New York; the couple was raising their three children on Long Island when they decided to move west and await the birth of their fourth child. Sherman was named Head of the U of A Journalism Department. While on sabbatical as a Fulbright Professor in Ankara, Turkey, Sherman died suddenly in 1968. Liz returned to the U of A, earning her MS in history, and teaching at Pima Community College. She married the late Gerald H. Scotney in 1970. Liz switched careers and became a highly successful real estate broker from 1978 until her death. An Associate Broker affiliated with Long Realty for 18 years, Liz served a two-year term on the Board of Directors of the Tucson Association of REALTORS, and attained numerous designations from the National Association of REALTORS. She was a Certified Residential Specialist, an Accredited Buyers Representative and a member of the NAR Graduate REALTOR Institute. A top producer in Long Realty Company, Liz was recognized with numerous awards, including ”Top Selling Agent Achievement Award” on four separate occasions. In recognition of her service and achievements, she was appointed a company Vice-President, and served as a member of the Executive Council. She was also a charter member of the Long Realty's President Club and was appointed every year, including 1998, to the ”Circle of 26” whose membership is limited to the top twenty-six agents in the company. Liz served several terms on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona from 1974 through 1983, and was a current member of the President's Advisory Circle, having co-chaired their 1997 fund raiser. She was an active member of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Institute of Mining Engineers (WAAIME), was a contributing member of the Tucson Jazz Society, the Tucson Symphony Women's Association, a Sustaining Member of the Tucson Museum of Art League, a supporter of The Invisible Theater, Tucson Botanical Gardens, and a 55-year member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority Tucson Alumnae Club. An avid sports fan, she was known among her friends as the ”No. 1 Rabid Fan” of the U of A Wildcat Basketball team, and traveled extensively to cheer them on in PAC-10 and NCAA games. Liz will be remembered for her tireless pursuit of excellence in her profession, her kindness, her feisty spirit, her courage and laughter in the face of adversity, and her wisdom which was always beyond her years. Liz's family and friends will celebrate her life at a Memorial Service to be held on Saturday, February 28, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 3737 Old Sabino Canyon Road, Tucson, AZ 85750. TIRRELL, James W., age 89, of Tucson, passed away February 17, 1998. James moved from Framingham, MA to Tucson in 1951. He was an Insurance salesman for American National Insurance and President of the Insurance Workers Union for many years. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church for 47 years. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anne; daughter, Marge Muri of MA, Mae (Patrick) Cleary of Tucson, Karen Romanoski of Tucson, Noreen Tirrell, of Tucson; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren also survive him; and one sister, Edna Tirrell, of MA. WEAVER, John A., 77, of Tucson, died February 16, 1998 after a short illness. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, John Weaver, in Medina, OH, Richard Weaver, in Vermilion, OH; one daughter, Karen S. Martin, in Tucson; six grandchildren, Christopher Weaver, Jeffrey Weaver, Amy Weaver, Bryan Weaver, Kristin Martin and Joshua Martin; and two great-grandchildren. John had a great love of airplanes and he spent most of his time building the exact models of all kinds of aircraft. He has exhibited them all over the country at conventions. He has some exhibited at the pima Air Museum, Tucson, AZ. He was a member of the International Modelers Plastic Society, and the local IMPS. BAUMANN, John A., age 42, of Tucson, died February 17, 1998 following a lingering illness. He was born in Scottsdale, AZ on November 16, 1955. He is survived by his wife, Joan (Matchinsky); son, Max and daughter, Alysa; other survivors include his parents, Donald and Imogene Baumann; sisters, Maureen Curit and Susan (Mrs. Richard) Turner; brothers, Donald, Robert and James; and numerous nieces and nephews. John attended Brophy Prep and Arizona State University. He was president of Bear Kodiak, Inc., a Tucson based produce company. He was a member of the S. Mae Burnell was born January 19, 1938 in Marlowe, OK and went to be with the Lord on February 17, 1998. She is survived by her husband, Michael; and children, Timothy, Tina, Mindy and Mikie; mother, Lorene; brother, Charles; and sisters, Clarise and Judy; grandchildren, Tim, Tasha, Dylan, Nichole and Timmy. James Edward Hancock 75, of Anchorage Alaska, went to be with the Lord January 29, 1998. Mr. Hancock was born in West Frankfort, IL on December 16, 1922. He served his country during WWII as a member of the Navy and survived the sinking of the USS Lexington during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942. In 1952 he moved to Tucson where he operated Jim's Pie Company, delivered for Rainbow Bread Co. and later for Hostess Cake Co. In 1979 he moved to Anchorage, Alaska. He retired from Alaska USA Federal Credit Union in 1990. Mr. Hancock is survived by daughters, Nancy Siegel of Cottonwood, AZ, Deborah Garrison of Richmond, VA, Joanne Phillips (Ken) of Anchorage, Alaska, Suzette Peterson of Tucson and Froy Hancock of Strawberry, AZ; sons, Edward Hancock of Kodiak, Alaska, John Hancock of Anchorage, Alaska and Stuart Hancock of Tucson; as well as 23 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
