ASHWOOD, Phyllis I., 82, a retired special education teacher, died Monday, February 9, 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ashwood Jr. They moved to Tucson from Kalamaoo, MI, in 1958. She is survived by two sisters, Joan Maruska of Corpus Christi, TX, Judith Whitaker of Allen Park, MI; one brother, Martin Messimer of Trenton, MI; a sister-in-law, Mary Housand of St. Joseph, MI; three daughters, Janet L. Merwood of Seattle, WA, Susan (Mrs. Ray) Sisson of Show Low, AZ, Ann (Mrs. Ron) Lee of West Covina, CA; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ashwood was the 1978 AZ Special Education Teacher of the Year. Phyllis was an active member of the Southside Presbyterian Church and served as a volunteer to the House of Neighborly Service, Casa Maria, Prima Vera Foundation, and The Postal History Foundation. She was on the Board for Armory Park Association, and was the past treasurer for the local alumni chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She is also a past member of the Scottish Society.
A Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 1998, at Southside Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that remembrances be made to Southside Presbyterian Church, The Postal History Foundation, Armory Park Association, or another charity of your choice.

BENZ, Bessie Vest, passed away February 11, 1998. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Robert McAdoo Vest and Albert K. Benz. Mrs. Benz was born in Quanah, TX on September 9, 1910, shortly thereafter her family moved to Hugo, OK, just North of the Red River. She was a resident of Tucson for the past 67 years. She leaves behind two loving daughters, Bobbie Vest (James) Falk of Great Falls, VA and Mary Vest (Barry) Bowen of Conroe, TX; a brother, R.W. Taylor of Klamath Falls, OR; five beloved grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Benz was a member of the 1st Congregational Church; an active member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #2, Daughters of the Nile and a past Mother Adviser of Templar Assembly Rainbow Girls. A member of Tucson Medical Center Auxiliary, and the Alpha Phi Mother's Club. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held on Monday, February 16, at St. Philips in the Hills Episcopal Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment immediately following at TMP East Lawn Cemetery, Order of Eastern Star Chapter #2 will conduct the graveside service. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Children's Language Learning Center, P.O. Box 391, Tucson 85702 or The Square and Compass Crippled Children's Clinic, 2600 N. BRENTON, Barbara J., 74, of Tucson, died February 11, 1998. Preceded in death by husband, Richard Brenton. Survived by son, Philip Brenton; daughter, Dale K. Brenton; grandsons, Richard O. Brenton and Jesse P. Brenton, all of Tucson; and four great-grandchildren. Private family services to be held. Memorials may be made to American Lung Association or St. Luke's. DANIEL, Pauline, of Catalina, passed away February 10, 1998. Born in Riverside, TN, March 19, 1905 to Thomas and Addie Belle Akers. She moved to Dover, Ohio where she met and married Elmer Daniel and lived for many years in Wilmot, Ohio, where her children, Eloise and Raymond were born. They moved to Tucson in 1943 for health reasons. Pauline worked as a waitress for Viola Hessilink at the Congress Street Walgreens and later at Frampton-Stone Cafeteria on 4th Ave. In 1973 she moved to Catalina to be near her daughter, Eloise. Survivors include her son, Raymond Daniel of Tucson; daughter, Eloise (Clinton) Norton of Catalina; grandchildren, John (Dawn) Daniel and Donald (Sheryl) Daniel of Tucson, Michael (Becky) Norton of Tucson, Roger (Judy) Norton of Catalina, Bonnie (Jeffrey) Fisher of Newport, RI; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Jay of TN; and sisters, Polly (Frank) Vitt, Delphia Wendling and Sue Schlemmer of Dover, OH. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer in 1966; brothers, Henry, Amos and Archie of TN; and sisters, Ester Zeros and Theo Meldrum of Dover, OH. Funeral Service will be held at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd., Monday, February 16, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. with Visitation one hour prior, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society.

DODGE, Debbie Lou, 37, of Catalina, died February 9, 1998. Wife of Leland of Catalina; mother of Jermery Martinez of San Diego, Brandon Martinez, Serena and Devon Dodge all of Catalina, AZ; daughter of Thomas Nilsson and Grace Peka both of San Diego; sister of Geana Nilsson, Rory Blanchard and Cheryl Nilsson. GLADSON, Carroll David, 59, of Tucson, AZ, died January 23, 1998. He was a steel worker. He is survived by daughter, Tammy Pauline Thomas of Martinsville, Ind. and son, Jesse Gladson. Burial will be private. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

LAWHUN, Jerry Lee, 33, died February 4, 1998. He is survived by his mother, Pearl Beverly; step-father, Norman Beverly; siblings, Tina Nassar, John D. Krueger, Mary E. Krueger, Beverly J. Rhoades, June Ann Price and Joseph M. Kosunick; grandparents, Bert and Jean Lawhun; uncles, Forest and Greg Lawhun and Le Roy Mayhorn Jr.; aunts, Phyllis Cook and Beverly Dadisman; as well as nieces and nephews. Services will be private. STRONG, Carrillo Arturo, 67, of Tucson, passed away February 11, 1998. Preceded in death by loving wife, Josie Strong. Survived by daughter, Vera Espana (John); son, Arthur Strong (Donna); grandchildren, John Espana, Brian and Tara Strong; great-grandchild, John Espana Jr.; and loving companion, Belen Feather. HUBER, Mariam E., 77, of Oracle, AZ, died February 10, 1998. Survived by son, John R. Huber of Oracle, AZ; daughter, Cheryl A. Smith of Osterburg, PA; grandsons, Jefferey Huber, Bradley Huber and Steven Huber; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Pat Hart of Dover, Delaware. LOPEZ, Edith O'Connor, 76, died February 11, 1998. Mother of Fred W. (Sue) Lopez, Edie A. (Jim) Berry, Pat A. (Jack) Nethery, Dianne E. (Joe) Brunson, all of Tucson; sister of Catherine M. Bravo of Tucson; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred M. Lopez and son, Ronald E. Lopez. ONGER, Bertril A., 82, died February 10, 1998. Husband of Hilda Onger of Tucson; father of Larry Onger of Tucson and Cheryl Sistad-Grygla of Minnesota; brother of Hildur Yoraway of Escondido, CA; grandfather of Jodi Ramos, Ricky Onger, Theresa Buratczuk and Alette Sistad; six great-grandchildren also survive. He was a WWII veteran serving in the Medical Corp. Funeral Service 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 1998 at Tanque Verde Lutheran Church, 8625 E. Tanque Verde. OWEN, Marjorie, 79, of Tucson, died February 10, 1998. She was retired from Hughes Aircraft. Survived by daughter, Sandra Castleman of Texas. POE, Carl, age 51, of Tucson, passed away February 5, 1998. Carl Edwin Poe was born to Erskine and Pazzellar Poe on August 23, 1946 in French Camp, Mississippi. Carl leaves to cherish his memory, a loving wife, Mattie Ruth Poe; a son, Johnny Ona Haynes Poe and his wife, Lucille; three grandchildren, John Carl, Brooke Pazzellar, Rhea Ruth Haynes Poe; two brothers and three sisters, Oscar Lee Poe and his wife, Ira Lee, Mattie Ruth Joyce and her husband Freddie, James Poe and his wife Bessie, Gloria Maxine Ewing and her husband, Calvin, Glenda Irene Pointer and her husband P.J.; and a host of family and friends. John W. (Jay, J.W.) Waldon
April 13, 1910 – February 11, 1998
Jay was born on a ranch near Fredonia, in San Saba County, TX. He worked on farms and ranches before moving to Tucson in 1937. In 1938 he went to work for Ray Harris at Central Auto Sales until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps the 15th of October, 1942 and was discharged October 23, 1945. He came home to New Mexico. He had a farm in the Hatch Valley. In the service he served in New Guinea, Northern Solomons and Bismark Archipelago. The various tropical fevers he brought home forced him to quit the farming in 1949. The farm was sold and he came back to Tucson in 1952. He went to work at the Tucson Airport in the fire department where he rose to Fire Chief and spent 27 years in the fire department. He is survived by Winona and one son, Hollis B. (Carolynn); two daughters, Deborah (Morris) Ardle, Renee Farnsworth; there are five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, two brothers and two grandchildren. After Jay's retirement he spent time fishing and working on and dealing in automobiles. Memorial Service, Saturday, 2:00 p.m. at EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile.

WEBB, Mary C., 64, of Tucson, passed away Sunday, February 8, 1998. She was born August 8, 1933 in Burlington, Iowa. She was the daughter of Paul and Catherine Murphy. She married Ronald Webb on August 4, 1950. She moved to Tucson in August 1969. She retired from University Physicians Breast Center. Survived by husband, Ronald Webb; three sons, Mike, Kelly and Bruce; and daughter, Jeanne Nickol, all of Tucson; and daughter, Chris Standard of Burlington, Iowa. There will be an informal gathering at the family home on Saturday, February 14, 1998 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Carondelet St. Joseph's Hospice, P.O. Box 13170 Tucson, AZ 85732-3170 in Mary's memory.

CASTLEBERRY, Jack C., 71, died on February 7, 1998. He is survived by children, Deborah (Tom) Bissett and Steve (Martha) Castleberry; grandchildren, Evan and Lee Bissett, David, Susanna and Paul Castleberry; brothers, Ray (Ruth), Eugene, Gaines (Viola); and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle; brothers and sisters, John, Carmen, Ernestine, Esther, Lois, Ruth, Robert, Margaret, Hampton and Ralph. A Memorial Service will be held at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 2545 N. Tucson Blvd., on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.

Edgar Durazo - In sadness and sorrow we announce the passing of Edgar Durazo, 30. HALPERN, Selma Belle, 78, of Tucson, died February 9, 1998. She is survived by her husband, Joseph S. Halpern of Tucson; son, Lewis A. (Judy) Halpern of Paramus, NJ; daughter, Judith (Joseph) Jakubowicz of Coral Springs, FL; four grandchildren; sisters, Hannah Levine and Adele Lytell, both of Florida.
