Hazel Burket Wilcox
Hazel Burket Wilcox passed away on February 3, 1998 and Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, February 5 at St.Andrew's Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel.
She was born on June 1, 1900, on her father's homestead in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma Territory. Her father was a preacher and a farmer and her mother was his ever faithful co-worker and companion. Their influence was the background for Hazel's life of love and service to her family and her friends.
Hazel's early years were spent in moving about Oklahoma where her father's preaching ministry took them. They eventually settled in the town of Alva, Oklahoma, and, by that time, the family included her older sister and a younger sister and brother.
After attending school at Northwestern Normal College, in Alva, she taught school there for three years. Then, with a girlfriend, she left for Arizona in a new Model T Ford for a teaching job at Palominas School near the San Pedro River, just west of Bisbee.
At first, they lived in the cloak room at the school but soon moved to Mosen's Ranch, near Hereford.
While there, she met her husband-to-be, Bruce Wilcox, who was working at the Apache Powder Company plant in Douglas. Soon, she was teaching in Douglas and on May 12, 1928, she and Bruce were married in Douglas at the home of the Presbyterian minister.
Their family came to include a son, Bruce, and daughter, Dorothy, both of whom are deceased. Two other sons are still living, Joe Wilcox, of Tucson and George Wilcox, of Canyon Lake, California.
Hazel simply made life fun for all of those around her. She was always busy with her painting, sewing, gardening, church work, and visiting, and was always going to 'get all caught up on things' some day.
The family moved to Tucson in 1945 and, except for a period when Bruce was building sulfuric acid and ammonia plants in California and Texas, this has been their home.
Bruce preceded her in death in 1972.
Her loving family that remains consists of her sons, daughters-in-law Velma, Shirley, and Diane, and seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Her family will miss her and remember her life as it continues with them.
She was recently recognized by Trinity Presbyterian Church as being a member for 50 years.
Memorial gifts may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church.
