Erica Lyn Bowden
May 21, 1976 - January 28, 1998
A Woman for the 21st Century
Beloved daughter of Marita and Pete Bowden, Erica was a bright shining star who loved life. Early on, it was apparent that she possessed a 'backbone of steel.' She was wrenched from us tragically and too soon. She stood poised on the edge of her new life as a university graduate, ready to soar and reap the reward of her hard work. Erica graduated from Sabino High School in May, 1994. Erica planned to graduate from the University of Arizona on May 16, 1998 with a BSPA in Criminal Justice Administration and pursue a career as an investigator. She received a scholarship for the fall and spring semesters as the president of the Criminal Justice Club at the University. She was delighted and surprised by the honor.
Erica loved her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega; she held the office of Vice President of Finance and chaired or organized various sorority activities. She gave generously of her time to various volunteer activities at the University. Erica donated blood as often as possible to the American Red Cross, thus touching lives of many people she did not know. For the past two summers she taught swimming classes at Kingston Knolls and was a lifeguard at the YMCA. Erica always gave '150%' to every part of her life. She prized her friendships and guarded them zealously. A void has been created in the lives of her family and friends. Erica was a wonderful, wholesome and loving daughter who was every parent's dream child. She was the light of our lives.
In addition to her mother and father, Erica is survived by her brother, Lt. Lynden P. Bowden III of Tucson and Omaha, NE; her grandmothers, Thelma Bowden of Phoenix and Roselyn Silverman of Washington, DC; her aunts, Phyllis Wilson and Lynda Pike of Phoenix; her uncle, Captain Eugene D. Silverman, MD, USN of Bethesda, Maryland as well as many other relatives in Arizona, New York and Pennsylvania. Erica will be protected by her grandfather's, Seymour Silverman and Lynden Bowden who pre-deceased her.

Marietta Stirratt Franklin
Marietta Stirratt Franklin slipped from this life into her heavenly home to be with her Lord, January 23, 1998. She was 91 years old. She had resided in La Posada Healthcare in Green Valley for the past nine years as an Alzheimer's patient.
Marrietta was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico on March 15, 1906. The family soon moved to Amarillo, TX, where she lived until coming to Tucson to attend the University of Arizona in 1924. She became a member and later president of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and Mortar Board. She graduated in 1928 and married Selim H. Franklin that same year. Her father-in-law, Selim M. Franklin, who as a young lawyer and member of the 13th State Legislature, gave the impassioned speech that won the University of Arizona for Tucson. Her mother-in-law, Henrietta Franklin was a charter member of St. Lukes and the founding president of YWCA. Marietta was a founding member of the Junior League and president of that organization in 1938-1939. She was active on the St. Luke's board as well until 1940, when her husband joined the Army Air Corps and the family moved to Tacoma, WA. After a year there they were transferred to Pendleton, OR; the next year to Casper, WY. Major Franklin was transferred to La Junta, CO but for lack of adequate housing Marietta and the children returned to Tucson. While there Marietta was asked to be the coordinator for all the volunteer organizations in Tucson for the war effort. She had to decline as she wanted to rejoin her husband when he was transferred to Santa Ana, CA in 1944. The family remained in The Newport Harbor area until Marietta returned to Tucson in 1968.
Marietta is survived by her son, Selim (Bud) Franklin, a superior court judge in Newport Beach and Santa Ana, and by her daughter, Shirley Cooney of Tucson. Marietta's sister lives in Mozambique, in south eastern Africa. Her grandchildren, Martin Cooney of Minneapolis, MN, Steven Cooney of Moline, IL, Allen Cooney of Tucson, Cristian Cooney of Dallas, TX, Pamela Marshall of Walnut, CA, Selim (Skip) Franklin, Valerie Parker, Richard Franklin all of Seattle, WA. Marietta had thirteen great-grandchildren. Also very dear to her were nieces and nephews, Mardy Stotsky, Mary Rose Duffield, Dr. John H. Carroll and Dr. Christopher Carroll all of Tucson and fifteen great-nieces and nephews.
There was nothing in this world more important to her than her family.
Marietta had been a member of St. Philip's-in-the-Hills but later attended First Evangelical Free Church.
There will be a family graveside service for Marietta at Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday, January 31, 1998 and a Celebration of her Life as a memorial in April when the extended family can attend. Please, no flowers. But a thought might be taken for the Alzheimer's Association or the Arizona Right to Life. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).
