KINCAID, H. Thomas 'Tam', age 65, of Tucson, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Barbara Colt Kincaid; his three children, H. Thomas 'Thamas' (Linda) Kincaid Jr., Gail Kincaid (Richard) Jauck, Christopher 'Crit' Kincaid; and three grandchildren, Jessica and Matthew Jauck and James Kincaid. Tam served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He graduated from the University of Arizona and served in the Arizona State Legislature from 1970 to 1974. NEEDLER, Garland K., 51, of Tucson, died March 31, 1998. Survived by wife, Kathy of Tucson; son, Ryan Needler of Ft. Ryan John Speidel, 25, of Tucson, AZ, was graciously given up by his family to the loving arms of God on Monday afternoon, March 30, 1998 after a courageous battle with kidney disease. Ryan was born in Rugby, ND, and spent his childhood in Hazen, ND. He moved to Tucson in 1986 and graduated from Mountain View High School in 1991. At the time of his death he was a junior at the University of Arizona pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering and was employed by Desert Analytical Services as a microscopist. Ryan is survived by his parents, Del and Mary Speidel of Tucson; sister, Stephanie Speidel and her partner, John Heider of Tucson; grandmother, Hildegard Wallender of Hazen; aunts and uncles, Dallas and Bert Speidel of Hazen, Bruce and Sarah Drath of Tucson, Loren and Peggy Wiest of Hazen, Rev. A. David and Nancy Sailer of Logansport, IN, John Sailer of Minneapolis, MN and Ron and Lana Dietrich of Allenton, MI; and many cousins and friends. VINCENT, Irving, 78, of Florence, AZ, died March 31, 1998. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and came to Arizona 48 years ago. He was a retired attorney after 50 years. He was in the United States Army, WWII Pacific Theatre of War. He was a former county attorney for Pinal County, a member of the Jewish National Fund, member of B'Nai B'rith, 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Shriner's, served for many years on the community relations committee for the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix. HAMMEL, Fred H., 83, of Tucson, passed away on March 31, 1998. He was born May 8, 1914 in Clarksville, Iowa. His brothers, John and Lester and his wife, Wanda precede him in death. Survivors include his sister, Leona Allen; his brother, Eldon; his sons, David, Michael and Gene; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and loving companion Wanda Hamilton. Fred was retired from the Arizona Children's Colony in Coolidge, and had been involved in many other kinds of business in his lifetime, including farming, real estate, and finance. He was a long time member and one of the Founders of Catalina Baptist Church. Visitation will take place Friday, April 3, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. SULLIVAN, Jack E., 82, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, April 1, 1998. Jack was preceded in death by his son, Jack Leland Sullivan; and his brother, Leonard Sullivan. VAN SLYCK, Willard Nicholas, Jr., 79, of Tucson, Az, passed away on April 3, 1998. He was born on July 21, 1918 in El Reno, OK. His brother Harold preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Van Slyck; his children, Tom Van Slyck (wife, Ann), Nancy V. Holt (husband, Don) and Susan V. Jones (husband, Cal); and one grandchild (Parker Jones). He was born to Willard N. and Hazel (Canfield) Van Slyck. He moved to Kansas at an early age and graduated from Topeka High School. He graduated from Yale University, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa. After one year at Yale Law School he entered the Army and served honorably as a Captain with the Army Air Corps during World War II, including service as a Meteorologist in England for the last two years of the European campaign.
He returned to graduate with honors from Washburn Law School in Topeka, Kansas and then practiced with the firm of Cosgrove, Webb and Oman. In 1961 he moved to Tucson where he began his career as a Professor with the College of Law at the University of Arizona, where he taught for 19 years. While Professor Emeritus, he continued to serve on the Arizona State Bar Ethics Committee for several years.
He was a member of the Tucson Country Club and as a member of the Pinetop Country Club he served on its Board of Directors for three years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Homeowners Association in Pinetop.
One of his favorite pastimes was the pursuit of the game of golf. He was a man truly devoted to his family and law students. Florence Christina Craft Conant, born in Pewaukee, Wisconsin on November 27, 1916, will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She passed away on April 4, 1998 after a brief illness. An active member of church and civic groups, she has called Tucson her home since 1976. She graduated from Waukesha High School, a member of the National Honor Society and captain of the Women's Athletic Team. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for Hornburg Motor Company in Hartland, Wisconsin from 1934 until 1947. Following her marriage, she lived in Buffalo, New York, where she was President of Faculty Wives at the State University of New York College at Buffalo from 1948-1950. After moving to New Rochelle, New York, she worked as the church secretary and was an active member of the Women's Society at the Christ Methodist Church from 1951 until 1976. While in Tucson, she worked as secretary at the University of Arizona, and was a life member of the U of A Faculty Women. Since 1979 she has been a member of the Desert Garden Club of Tucson and was elected for a two year term as President from 1993-1995. She volunteered her time and secretarial skills at the Casas Adobes Congregational Church from 1993 until her passing. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Howard Conant, former head of the U of A Art Department; hertwo children, Judy Conant Steinbach of Richmond, Kentucky; and Dr. Jeffrey S.Conant of College Station, Texas; and five grandchildren, Tara and Shana Steinbach; and Danielle, Scott, and Trevor Conant. HOWELL, Mavis I., 71, of Tucson, passed away on April 3, 1998 after a brief illness. Her husband, Edwin, preceded her in death. JOHN, Manda Ruth, age 85, was called to her heavenly home on April 4, 1998. Manda was born on May 7, 1912 in Webb (Sioux Rapids), IA. She became a child of God through baptism at the Lutheran Church in 1912. Her parents were Ross Jacobson and Hannah (Swenson) Jacobson. Manda was also confirmed in the Lutheran Church. In 1920 she moved with her parents to a farm near Belview, MN. Manda graduated from Belview High School in 1929 and attended Bethany College in Mankato, MN, in 1930. She took a summer course at Chicago Gregg Normal School in 1930 and a summer course in bookkeeping at Minneapolis Business College. She taught commercial subjects at Bethany College for three years. She had designs on being the first woman accountant in the state of Minnesota and was taking a correspondence course to achieve this, but married instead. Manda married Rev. John H. John on December 11, 1934 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Sheridan (Belview) MN. Rev. John was a pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Marshfield, WI. Manda and John moved to a farm near Neilsville, WI in April of 1938. April of 1954, they moved to St. Louis. There, Manda got a job as a bookkeeper at Garavelli's Restaurant. Stan Musial was part owner of that restaurant. She then worked at Molls Grocery Store for three years, the cleaners for ten years, and later at Breckenridge Motor Lodge. She retired in December 1973 at the age of 61. After her husband died in May of 1974, Manda worked at the Concordia Historical Institute. In June of 1977 she moved to Tucson, AZ. She first joined Faith Lutheran where she did much volunteer work. She later joined Holy Cross Lutheran, where she has been an active member ever since. Her marriage was blessed with five children, Frederic (Phyllis) of Green Bay, WI; Hermann (Rachel) of Escondido, CA; David (Evelyn) of St. Louis, MO; Judith Hayter of Phoenix, AZ; and Dorothea (Tom) Moore of St. Louis, MO; 12 grandchildren, Karl John, Rosanne (Ron) Pezze, Charlotte (Jaime) Gomez, Philip John, Rebecca (Greg) Miller, Jeffrey (Amy), and Jason John, Mark and Jonathan Hayter, James, Christina and Kurt (Cheri) Stevenson; and five great-grandchildren, Ronnie and Gina Pezze, Karlyna Gomez, Jenny Stevenson, and Jacob Stevenson. Manda is also survived by her sister, Rocell Kacher of Everett, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; and her brother, Harold.Services will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 1998 in St. Louis, MO at Heiligtag-Pfitzinger Mortuary, 1081 Jeffco 63010.
