Joanie was taken from us Sunday, April 5, 1998. She is now with her beloved husband, Raymond. Survivors include her daughter, Colleen (Dee); sons, David and Raymond, Jr. (Karen); grandchildren, James Pouliot II and Brian David Nuszkiewicz. Joanie was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond and granddaughter, Kathy Pouliot. Her smile would light up the room and take away any pain. Her sense of humor could make you blush and laugh away any bad thoughts. Her gentle touch always said 'I love you'. She was everyone's 'Mom'. UNRUH, Wilma Pauline, 85, of Tucson, died Monday, April 6, 1998. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, A.I. 'Ted' Unruh; children, Joe R. (Zona) Unruh, James A. Unruh, Sharon K. (John) Hoppstetter; 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Unruh was a long-time member of Homemaker's Club at the Univ. of Arizona Agriculture Department. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 1998 at ARIZONA MORTUARY, 7 E.University Blvd. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery. Jean Yoshino, 73, died March 30, 1998. A Tucsonan since 1958, she taught at Menlo Park and CE Rose Elementary Schools for 19 years. She was a Unitarian Universalist and activist for many Democratic, liberal, social and environmental issues. She will be missed by many for boundless generosity, enthusiasm, good spirit and dedication. She was active in Children's Creative Response to Conflict, the American Friend's Service Committee, Educators for Social Responsibility, Emily's List, Results, Sisters Cities projects, many civil rights issues and a multitude of other causes and organizations. She campaigned tirelessly for many local, regional and national candidates, was a delegate for TEA, AEA and NEA.
She was the loving mother of Mark (Grace Hou) and Anne (Bill Grimes). Family and her many causes were her life. A memorial service is planned at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson May 2nd at 3:00 p.m. at 4831 E. 22nd Street. Donations in her memory, in lieu of flowers, would be appreciated by her church or one of her many causes.
ZUEHLKE, Gertrude A., 96, of Tucson, died April 3, 1998. She is survived by children, Horst C. (Maria) Zuehlke, Ruth Ashby and Bernhard Zuehlke; six grandchildren, Patricia D., Sue Ann, Ericka Forrester, Heidi Supkis, Ingrid Payette and Helga McKnight. As well as great-grandchildren. BARTON, Winston Odell, age 72, of Tucson, formerly of Littlefield, Texas, passed away April 7, 1998. Winston was born to Acrey Barton and Grace (nee Reynolds) on January 17, 1926. He moved to Az. in 1956. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jean (nee Kelly); son, Donald Barton of Tucson; daughters, Rita McNeely (Richard) of Glendale, Az, Jeri (Brett) Inman of Tucson, Az. and six grandsons. Also survived by one sister, Frances Colvin of Lake Jackson, TX and two nieces. CLARK, Edwin F. 'Jack' Born July 23, 1924, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 1998. Mr. Clark is survived by his wife; sister; four children; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Dr. Archie J. Deutschman, Jr., 80, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 1998. Born November 21, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, Archie was the second son of Archie J. Deutschman, Sr. and Vera H. Boyd. Educated in Illinois and Wisconsin, Archie was a Big 10 wrestling champion and was recently inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. His life's work as a chemist brought him to the University of Arizona Agricultural College in 1957 where he specialized in high-pressure chemistry. Archie had a renowned collection of mammalaria cacti and was an avid photographer and bird-watcher. Archie is preceded in death by parents, Archie, Sr. and Vera and by his brother, Vernon. He is survived by wife, Lois; brother, Robert (Lorraine) Deutschman; children, Archie Deutschman, III (Cheryl), Charles Deutschman (Cheryl), James Deutschman, Anne Martin, Joan Dedmon (Mark) & 11 grandchildren. A memorial gathering in Archie's honor will be held at the family home on Thurs, April 9 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.
LEON, Manuel M., 92, of Tucson, went to be with the Lord Monday, April 6, 1998. Mr. Manuel is survived by his wife, Candelaria; sons, Manuel R. Jr. (Sylvia) and Danny (Alma) Leon; daughter, Betty (Tony) Duarte and Myra Huaraque; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ignacia Acevedo and Teresa Garcia. BALDWIN, Cecil Eugene 'Gene' 62, years old, a native of Tucson, died on Monday, April 6, 1998 at his home is Las Vegas, Nevada, after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. Born October 17, 1935, Gene is survived by his wife Margaret; his two sons, Brad (Linda) Baldwin and three grandchildren, Tatlana, Julia and Grant Baldwin of Denver, Colorado and Brick (Connie) Baldwin of Seattle, Washington. His mother Minnie Mae Baldwin and his sister, Barbara Baldwin Salyer of Tucson; his niece, Kathryn Salyer Cox (Steven) and family of Sugar Land, Texas; his nephew, Michale Salyer of Phoenix, Arizona and cousin and close friend, Jim Ash (Barbara) of Yorba Linda, California also survive. His father Martin Baldwin preceded him in death.
Gene was a member of the Tucson Boys' Choir and attended San Hughes Elementary School, Mansfeld Junior High School, Tucson High School and the University of Arizona. he graduated from Tucson High School in 1963 and from the University in 1968 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. while at the University, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and played Center for the University of Arizona Basketball Team from 1954 to 1958.
Upon graduating from the University of Arizona in 1958, Gene, known as Cecil in his professional life, went to work as a mechanical engineer for Reynolds Electric, later EGG, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Gene retired from EGG in 1995 after 38 years with the company. During his career, he designed a door-closing system for the NATS hangar and a robot to work with radioactive materials on site. He was involved in nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site, nuclear waste and detection all over the world from the Northern Territory to the South Pacific, and was a member of the International Nuclear Emergency Search Team for detecting nuclear terrorist activities.
Gene was an avid sportsman, a gourmet cook, restored antique automobiles, and played banjo in a Dixieland jazz band. Gene and his sons restored antique cars including a 1917 Dodge Screenside Truck, a 1918 Dodge Roadster, a 1939 Chevrolet Coupe, a 1939 Pontiac and a 1914 Dodge Speedster. He and his sons, with help from a cousin and friends, participated in four interstate Batteries Great American Races from one side of the country to the other in two of the restored cars. He was a member of the Antique Automobile Club, the Horseless Carriage Club, and the Dodge Brothers Automobile Club.
Gene and five other employees from EGG formed a Dixieland Jazz Band in 1968, playing traditional New Orleans Jazz and performing Friday nights at Pogo's Tavern in Las Vegas. The Band celebrated its 25thanniversary by playing together again in 1993 and in 1997. The Band, which never had a name, will be celebrating its 30th anniversary with a tribute to Gene at Pogo's in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 15.
A family Graveside Service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson, Arizona and family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Gene's life at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, at 2804 E. Louis E. Peterson (Lt. Colonel USAF – Retired) passed away on April 8, 1998. He was born on June 29, 1920 in Siren, Wisconsin and was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Tobias Peterson; his father, Peter Peterson; and his sister, Kathleen. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; his children, Wendy Olson, Greg (Marcia) Peterson; and two beloved grandchildren, Sara and Elias Peterson. Colonel Peterson joined the Air Force in 1944 and was a distinguished bomber, fighter, and test pilot. In retirement, he taught college mathematics at AIMS College in Ft. Collins, CO, and was an Assistant Professor of Engineering at Iowa State University, Ames, IA. Louis and his wife of 49 years relocated to Tucson in 1944 to enjoy the Arizona sunshine. Lou was loved and will always be remembered by his friends and family. Funeral Service will be held at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd., Saturday, April 11, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior. Interment to follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery.

POORE, Josephine Estelle 'Jo' died Tuesday, 7 April 1998 at the Park Villa Convalescent Home in Tucson, AZ, age 92 years three months and 13 days. She was born Monday 25 December 1905 at home on her parents farm near Olmitz, Kansas, the fourth child of James and Matilda Margaret (Barstow) Pizinger. The family moved to Hoisington, Kansas when Josephine was about three years old. She attended Hoisington schools and was a school teacher after she graduated from Hoisington High School in 1923. She was going to be a concert violinist but due to an accident while attending college at Lindsborg, Kansas, she was unable to fulfill her dream. She married John Franklin 'Frank' Poore 10 November 1927 in Hoisington. They lived in St. Louis, Missouri, Dodge City and Hoisington, Kansas. She worked in her father's jewelry and music store in Hoisington; as a clerk in the carpet department in St. Louis, in the J. Frank Poore Insurance Agency in Hoisington and carried on for seven years after Frank's death. In 1958 she moved to Tucson with her daughters. She was an insurance agent, real estate salesman and broker in Tucson, having her own real estate business there until she was in her 80s. She was a member of the Easter Star, Help start the Rainbow Girls as well as the Girl Scouts of Hoisington, Kansas.
Survivors include her three daughters, Marilyn (Don) Braun and Patricia Anne 'Pat' Poore of Tucson, Kathleen Gayle 'Kay' Poore of Phoenix, Az; two grandchildren, Diane Michelle Braun of Lawrence, KS, Mark Bernard (Julie) Braun and one sister, Pearl Berscheidt of Tucson, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1950, one son in 1945, two brothers and three sisters.
