James J. 'Jack' Coile
Former general superintendent of Twin Buttes copper mine, died Sunday, May 17 at his Green Valley home. He was 72.
Mr. Coile was an Air Force veteran and a graduate of the University of Colorado. His career as a mining engineer and mine manager began in Grants, N.M. in 1954. Over the years, it took his family to Thunder Bay, Ontario; Brittania Beach, British Columbia; Tucson, Denver and Albuquerque, all for The Anaconda Company; and to Boise, Idaho for Morrison-Knudsen Inc.
He and his wife, Helen returned to their beloved Santa Cruz Valley in 1990. There, in the 1960s and '70s, he had helped to develop Anaconda's Twin Buttes open pit mine. He was well-known in the industry for his expertise in moving rock via conveyor belts. In the community he was known as a Sahuarita School Board member, 1967-'71; as a president of the Sahuarita-Green Valley Optimists Club; and as and artisan of turquoise and silver jewelry.
One of his legacies still graces the horizon south of Tucson every holiday season: It was his idea to light a huge metal Christmas tree at Twin Buttes that can be seen for miles on Interstate 19.
