Ian Patrick Sullivan - The Beloved son of Angela Johnson and John R. Sullivan, both of Tucson, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998 after a long illness. He was 11 years old. Born on March 1, 1987, Ian lived a life full of love and laughter, which he shared unreservedly with family and friends, as well as with the caregivers, teachers, nurses and doctors who gave generously to him of their talents and time. Despite the struggles he faced due to a severe lung condition, Ian possessed a unique and fearless joie de vivre which enabled him to live fully in the moment as few people can. His ready smile, deep belly laugh and inquisitive eyes captured the attention and admiration of all who knew him. Playful, determined, curious and affectionate, Ian especially enjoyed swimming, puppets, puzzles, videos, his dog Pushka and, as his mother often put it, 'anything Sesame Street.' A native Tucsonan, Ian was a member of St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, where he celebrated the sacrament of First Holy Communion on February 1, 1998. Ian attended Rillito School, enjoyed the kindness and enthusiasm of his devoted teachers. His brief but rich life included a 1991 family reunion in Madison, Connecticut, with his maternal grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, made possible by a grant from the Make A Wish Foundation. Ian was happiest during this and other visits with relatives, for he was in his element among people and at parties. Having deeply touched the lives of his parents, extended family, friends, teachers and caregivers, Ian will be sorely missed by all. The family wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to all who gave their loving care and friendship to Ian during his journey among us. MAUL, John Conrad Jr., age 80, died July 15, 1998 at his home in Nogales, Arizona. He was known to all of his friends and colleagues as Jack. He was born in Burbank, California May 4, 1918. He was educated in the Nogales school system. After graduation from high school he attended Otis Art Institute in California and Cornell University School of Architecture in New York and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Arizona in 1948. During the World War II years Jack was in the Army language school in the Russian section. Jack's family were Nogales pioneers. He lived in Santa Barbara, many years in Tucson and last approximately 20 years in Nogales, Arizona. Jack was an artist whose paintings were exhibited in one man shows in a number of galleries in various cities and always received with great interest and acclaim. All of his life he was true to a unswerving unique sense of aesthetics in every phase of his life. Harrison Moore, a contemporary artist once wrote about an exhibition of Jacks, as 'an impression of change and liveliness…shows how powerfully there runs between the pictures a current of a personality and of our times. He is an innovator and an heir, consciously and unconsciously of a treasure made up by the exacting tradition of modern art. The technical sensitivity of these pictures and the naturalness of that sensitivity makes one aware of an artistic and workmanlike conscience. Here painting like music becomes its own content, possessing it, giving it life and meaning.' 'His pictures are not pictures of anything they are projections of our world.' At John Maul's expressed wish to have only a memorial service; this will be announced at a future date. Contributions in his memory may be paid to the Tucson Museum of Art or to the Hilltop Gallery of Nogales, Arizona or to any institution of your choice.
