RABINOWITZ, Harold, a fifty-year resident of Tucson and a 22-year veteran of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, died Monday evening, July 20, 1998. The cause of death at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Hospice was congestive heart failure. He was 83. Harold Rabinowitz moved to Tucson shortly after World War II and soon began work scavenging spare parts for old aircraft – first for two private aircraft companies, then at Davis Monthan Field. As Davis-Monthan grew from a small World War II airfield to one of the largest Air Force installations in the world, Harold's job moved him from the meager wooden shack in which he started, to aircraft hangars and office buildings across the sprawling base. He would have roughly the same job for nearly twenty-two years. Born Harry Rabinowitz on the Lower East Side of New York in 1914, young Harry worked and played in his father's candy store in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn until the family moved to Southern California in 1928. As 'Harold' finished school in Los Angeles, his parents, Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Russia and Romania, owned a series of small markets and fruit stands there and in the Pomona/Ontario area. Beginning with a dairy farm in El Monte, Harold worked alongside his parents and his younger brother, Bill in each of the family's businesses. Harold eventually owned his own market and butcher shop. Drafted into the Army during World War II, Harold saw action in Germany as a gunnery man and also served as a mess cook and meat cutter, rising to the rank of Sergeant. Around 1948, after the war and following an honorable discharge from the military, Harold came to Tucson to nurse a disability the Army said he contracted during his service. Like so many others of his generation, he moved to Tucson because of its climate. In Tucson, Harold attended the University of Arizona on the G.I. Bill of Rights and worked a number of jobs including several at Grand Central Aircraft and Hughes Aircraft companies and at the U.S. Post Office. In 1952, Harold accepted a civilian position at Davis-Monthan procuring replacement parts for military aircraft. A good looking, muscular man with a thin mustache reminiscent of Clark Gable, Harold was active in the ‘fifties in the local Young People's Hebrew Association. He joined the Conservative movement synagogue, Congregation Anshei Israel, where he met and courted the popular Dorothy Levine. They married on her 34th birthday in 1955 and had a son. Several years earlier, Harold purchased a red brick house under construction in the Sam Hughes neighborhood, then just blocks from Tucson's eastern-most city limits. In the early ‘seventies, Harold transformed a decades-old sideline of selling new cars on commission for several out-of-town dealers and of fixing up used cars for resale – into a fledgling dealership of his own. It was called Harold's Auto Sales, on East Speedway. 'If Harold hasn't got it, you are better off without it, ' he had long joked on his business cards. In 1975, after the Veteran's Administration reevaluated his service-related disability and determined it to be 100%, Harold retired from D-M and from the car business. His family moved to the Catalina foothills the next year. And not long after his wife 'Dottye' died in 1985, Harold moved one final time to the Broadway Proper retirement community, where he lived for the last ten years. Harold was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Disabled American Veterans and the Jewish War Veterans. He had, for some time, been a member of the American Legion Post 7, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 385 and other fraternal and Jewish organizations. Harold Rabinowitz is survived by his brother William of Murietta, California and his son Steve of Washington, DC. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, July 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cong. Anshei Israel section of Evergreen Cemetery, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile, with Rabbi Arthur R. Oleisky officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cong. Anshei Israel, 5550 E. Fifth Street, 85710, to the VA Volunteer Service, VAMC, 3601 S. Sixth Ave., 85723, or to the Arthritis Foundation, 6464 E. Grant Rd., 85715.

Memorial Mass will be offered 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 24, 1998 at St.Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1375 S. Camino Seco. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.
