BILBY, Richard M., 67, died August 11, 1998 in Flagstaff, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth T. Bilby; his two daughters, Claire Bilby and Ellen Bilby Moore (Douglas); his two grandsons, Joseph and Andy; and his three stepsons, John, Stephen (Michelle) and Thomas Alexander. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph W. Bilby; his mother, Marguerite Mansfield Bilby; his brothers, Ralph Bilby, Kenneth Bilby and sister Peggy Bilby Drake. Richard was born in Tucson, Arizona on May 29, 1931. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army, 1952-54. He received his B.S. degree in 1955 from the University of Arizona and graduated from the University of Michigan School of Law in 1958. After law school, he was a law clerk for Chief Judge Richard H. Chambers of the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit. He practiced law from 1959 through October 1979 with the law firm of Bilby, Thompson, Shoenhair and Warnock. He was appointed to the United States District Court in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter. Richard served as a federal judge for nineteen years. Memorial Services are planned for 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 14, 1998 at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church located at 4440 N. Campbell Avenue at River Rd. Ruth C. Boshoven, 63, lost her valiant 13-year battle with breast cancer on August 10, 1998. Her courage and determination to beat the disease never faltered and she never complained. Her attention remained directed to the well-being of others. She spent untold hours comforting and encouraging other women upon discovery of a similar affliction. Her only regrets were inability to bowl with her friends, cook and entertain, and participate in the activities of or spoil her beloved eight grandchildren. She was a fantastic mother who raised three fine sons. She instilled in them her strong Christian values, strength, integrity and loving concern for all God's creatures. She was a giving, caring tower of strength who will be greatly missed by her husband, Ben; her sister, Mary; her sons and families, Mark and Laura (Ryan, Justin and Andrew), Jeff and Lori (Nicholas, Zachary and Jacob), Eric and Melanie(Sarah and Tristan); her mother-in-law, Adelle and her myriad of friends. A Memorial Service will be held in DMAFB Chapel #1 at 4:00 p.m., Friday, August 14. Immediately following, a wake will be held in the Officers Club to celebrate the life of this wonderful lady. BROOKS, Ruth Evangeline, entered eternal life on Wednesday, August 12, 1998 in Tucson. She was born on August 12, 1911 in Staunton, Illinois and moved to Tucson area with her parents when she was 16. She married Robert Glenn Brooks in 1938. Mrs. Brooks retired from Tucson Gas & Electric after working over 20 years. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 1951; her brother, George and two sons-in-law, Thomas Smith and Gerald Hinz. Survivors include her four daughters and three sons-in-law, Margaret Hinz, Janice and John Moore, Cheryl and Thomas Jacobs, Susan and Richard Gieseler; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Appogast and numerous nieces and nephews. Louis F. DiDonato, age 39, born on January 8, 1959 in Memphis, TN, died on Sunday, August 9, 1998. He is survived by his parents, Lillian and Salvatore DiDonato of Tucson; his sister, Mary Catherine Urwin of Kennewick, WA and his brother, Michael J. DiDonato of Maple Valley, WA. He is also survived by his aunt, Frances B. Fenn of Panama City, FL; four nieces, one nephew and his 'Little Brother, ' Jason Kepner. Louis has been a resident of Tucson since 1961, attending local schools and graduating from Tucson High School in 1977. In 1982 he graduated from Northern Arizona University with a degree in Therapeutic Recreation for the handicapped. Louis was a wonderful son, outstanding brother and loving uncle. Louis' love and caring for others will leave a lasting legacy in Tucson. Thank you Louis for touching our lives, we will never forget you. Junia Foster Duck passed away August 10, 1998 at Carondelet St. Joseph's Hospice. Born July 13th, 85 years ago in Tucson, she was a descendant of the pioneer Osborn family and was a cousin of the late Arizona Governor Sidney P. Osborn. Mrs. Duck is survived by her husband of more than 62 years, Thomas Spann Duck; son, Thomas Bryson Duck; grandson, Christopher A. Giesler and granddaughter, Susan Sweeney. A 1935 graduate of the U of A, Mrs. Duck, along with her husband, co-founded Ugly Duckling Rent-A-Car Systems in 1977 and actively served as the company's executive vice president for more than a decade. Services will take place at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway, Friday, August 14th with viewing at 9:00 a.m., services at 10:00. Dave was born December 12, 1974 in Tucson and was taken from all who loved him in a freak first time sky diving accident as he descended in tandem with his instructor in Kapowsin, Washington, August 9, 1998. David leaves behind his mother, Gail G. Pryor; his stepfather, Michael Pryor; his two sisters, Michelle (Casey) Peterson, Cindy C. Couture and his two nieces, Megan and Katie. Many other relatives are mourning him as well as numerous friends and acquaintances. Dave was an active community member growing up here involved in numerous youth sport activities, 4-H, community volunteer work, and was a dedicated student who earned his place in the National Honor Society from the 7th grade on thru high school graduation. His main sport was High School Football at Amphi High under Coach Friedli and he was voted All City, All State and participated in the Down Under Bowl playing football in Australia. He earned a full five year Football scholarship at NAU where he excelled both on the playing field and in the classroom, earning numerous scholastic athletic awards over the years such as the Nationwide Burger King Scholastic Athlete of the week in the fall of 1997, which came with at $10, 000 scholarship award. Upon graduating with honors as a Mechanical Engineer he was chosen as NAU Male athlete of the year for all the athletic programs at the whole school. During this time he still found time to be a big brother to a young boy from Flagstaff. After being recruited into a summer internship with The Boeing Co. during the 1997 summer break, where he worked in tooling on the wide body 777 jet, he was hired to continue his work as a mechanical engineer with the Boeing Co. in Seattle, Washington upon his graduation. There he began trying to cram into weekends all the fun activities he missed while applying himself to his education and football during his past college years. MEYER, Meno Jacob 'Bud' 86, of Tucson, Arizona, went to be with the Lord on August 11, 1998. He is survived in death by his wife, Jennie Landt Meyer of Tucson, AZ; two sons, Jacob E. Meyer of Kalamazoo, MI and Jerry A. Meyer of Tucson, AZ. He is also survived by two sisters, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Herman 'Pop' Cannon, died August 12, 1998, born April 15, 1912. First born of triplets, he arrived only hours after the historic Titanic tragedy. Starting out as a farmer in Texas, 'Pop' Cannon married Georgia Roden in 1930 and they were together for nearly 68 years. Georgia survives with their two children, Bob and Sheron; daughter-in-law, Shirley; son-in-law, Ted and foster son, Danny Sampson. A brother, T.L. Cannon and sister, Leona Shook survive out of nine children; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren also survive. In addition to farming, Pop's busy life included working as a truck driver and the director of a Christian boy's home in Phoenix. He walked with the Lord all of his life while keeping his eyes on Jesus. Pop was a very kind man and his life had touched many, young and old alike. Pop has received his reward and finished his course. We will remember him with joy in our hearts and our love will reach out to him across the great divide. We look forward to joining him and the rest of his family for an eternity with our Lord and the Eternal Family of God. SIMPSON, Harry, 75, of Tucson, Arizona, born June 18, 1923 in Collingdale, PA., died August 12, 1998 in St. Joseph's Hospice Unit. Survived by wife, Marcella Simpson and daughters, Kathleen (Gary) Vermeulen of Northville, MI and Penny (Dale) Hendricks of Columbus, Ohio; three stepsons, Patrick (Marjie) Spencer of Enon, Ohio, Leslie (Sandee) Spencer of Marysville, MI and Larry (Sharon) Spencer of Lisbon, CT; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. Preceded in death by daughter, Connie Simpson and former wife, Josephine Simpson. He was very active in the Sabbar Shrine, Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #116, Elks #2532 and Scottish Rite. He was a Major in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and served WWII in South Pacific. He retired from State Farm Insurance as an agency director in 1979 when he moved from Rochester, Michigan to Tucson, Arizona. Joseph Ventura
Joseph Ventura died Wednesday, August 12th, 1998 at his home in Catalina, AZ after a six year battle with prostate cancer.Despite his advanced cancer and chemotherapy, Joe continued to create works-of-art until two weeks prior to his death. Joe was born April 18, 1927 in New York City. When Joe was just ten years old, he was awarded the John Wanamaker Gold Medallion for a poster art competition held for all the New York City Schools. He studied music and drama at the Hartnett Music Institute and attended W. Jackson Studios in New York City. Joe also studied at Chaffey College in Ontario, California. Joe's thirty-five years of work to the commercial steel industry enhanced his love for metal sculpture. In 1975 Joe received a federal grant to work as a Resident Artist for Pima County Parks in Tucson, Arizona. He served as a sculptor, teacher and resource person for four years. While many of Joe's works are in private collections, you can view some of his sculptures in Tucson at Coronado Middle School, Canyon Del Oro High School, Donaldson Elementary, Flowing Wells Alternative High School, Cross Junior High, Tanque Verde Elementary School and Children's Memorial Park. Joe is listed in the 1998 edition of American Artists of Renown. In November 1996 Joe opened his own gallery, The Grey Ghost Gallery in Catalina. Joe is survived by his wife, Diane Simmons; eight children, Marla Jean Ortiz, Richard Ventura (Pam), Valerie Cashen, Stacey Johnston, Joseph Lee Ventura of California, Teresa Deeter (Dan) of Lake Havasu, AZ, John Ventura (Crista), Jaime VonGlann (Victor) of Tucson; four stepchildren, Michelle Stampfler, Troy Boswell, Nikki Stefan of Tucson and Kelly Montano (Dan) of Seattle, WA; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; seven step grandchildren; sisters, Lucille Brighton, Sister Agnes Clare; brothers, Edward (Gloria), Thomas (Eleanor); brother-in-law, Dino Areostatico (Mary-Ann); nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Joe's doctors and the Senior Research Nurse for their exemplary and compassionate care of Joe.
