Bertha M. Reynolds, 93, born August 15, 1905 in Prosperity, MO, passed away peacefully in Tucson, August 19, 1998. She is survived by her only son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Delicia Reynolds. Other survivors in Tucson include her sister-in-law, Christine Cole; nieces, Marsha Bennett and her family, Marla Fletcher and her family; nephews, Thomas Harper and his family, Ronald Harper and family in Oregon, Roy Harper and family in Broken Arrow, OK and niece, Carol Ann Henderson and family in Carl Junction, MO. She is also survived by many friends who will miss her dearly. Bertha was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Dana D. Reynolds in 1976. She belonged to and was active in the Rebekah Naomi Lodge #4, The Rebekah Cancer Club, The Saguaro 'Sew and So' Homemaker Club, The Jolly Girls Bridge Club, The Neighbors Pinochle Club, and The Royal Neighbors of America. Bertha was a kind and gentle woman, who never had an unkind word for anyone. She was a loving mother, and exceptional mother-in-law and devoted friend, who touched many lives.
Visitation will be Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., EVERGREEN MORTUARY. Services will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle with Pastor Gary J. Roper of St. James United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment Evergreen Cemetery, along side her husband. Rebekah Naomi Lodge #4 will conduct Graveside Services. Contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth of Hungary Clinic or a favorite charity.

RICE, Virginia E., age 53, of Tucson, died August 19, 1998. Survived by loving husband Gary D. Yanker and son, Andrew Gary Yanker both of Tucson; father, John Rice Sr. of St. Louis, MO; two brothers, John and Jim. She was editor for Readers Digest where she served as Dept. Head for 25 years. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 21st. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Saturday, August 22nd at 2:00 p.m. Private services at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TMC Foundation, Cancer Program, 5301 E. Grant, Tucson, AZ 85712 in memory of Virginia.

TAPAS, Nicholas, 72, died August 18, 1998 at home. Born on a snowy day in Chicago, Illinois March 31, 1926 to parents Christos and Marina Tapas. Served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was active in the invasion of Iwo Jima. Lived in Tucson, Arizona since 1978. Survived by wife of 47 years, Marian; brothers, John (Constance) Tapas of Glenview, IL and Andrew (Elene) Tapasof Niles, IL; brothers-in-law, Wilbert Maynard of Prospect Heights, IL and Donald (Sandy) Stevens of Omaha, NE; sisters-in-law, Eunice Maynard of Streamwood, IL and Ruth Narducci of Omaha, NE. Many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and dear friends also survive. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nicholas's memory may be made to TMC Hospice, 5301 E. Grant, Tucson, Arizona. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

WIEDEN, Walter C., 61, passed away August 19, 1998. Beloved husband of Marion Wieden; beloved father of Mark David (Susan) Wieden of Kansas, Matthew Joe (Shelli) Wieden of Tucson, Jill Ann (Daniel) Collins of Tucson; sister, Billie Jean Celaya of Tucson; beloved grandfather of Neven Wieden. Walter worked for Tucson Electric Power for 28 years. He retired so he could enjoy his fishing, outdoor life and fly tying. He was a member of B.P.O.E. #385 and a Board Member and Treasurer of Old Pueblo Trout Unlimited. Memorial Mass will be Saturday, August 22, 1998 at 10:00 a.m.at St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church, 5150 N. Valley View Road. Inurnment will be private at East Lawn Cemetery. ALEXANDER, Vera, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully on August 19, 1998. Vera was born in New York City on December 5, 1917 and celebrated her 80th birthday last year. Vera grew up on Long Island where she met her husband, Samuel. Vera and Sam were happily married for over 58 years. Vera and Sam were truly life partners. When Sam served in the Army during World War II, Vera went with him and worked as a civilian for the Inspector General. She completely supported Sam's career and was extremely proud of his accomplishments. They moved to Cleveland, OH in 1949 and then to Akron, OH to begin their business in 1952. Her love and support of Sam throughout their life together served as a model for their children, family and friends. In 1977, Vera and Sam retired to Tucson, Arizona and she fell in love with the desert and the culture of this part of the country. Vera and Sam welcomed old friends to Tucson and made many new friends here. Vera was a self-educated woman who valued books and learning above material things. Throughout her life, she gave of herself in charity and community service to many organizations including the Women's Auxiliary of the Jewish Center in Akron, OH, Temple Israel Sisterhood and Hadassah. In Arizona, she was active in Handi-Dogs and the Library Book Sale. For the last two years, she took great joy in tutoring with the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring program. With Sam, she participated in the HABBJACH Dollars for Scholars scholarships to the School of Nursing at the University of Arizona. Vera loved life. Whether she was talking about her beloved standard poodles or giving a 'review' of the latest new restaurant in town, her joy was infectious. In addition to Sam, Vera leaves her children, Diane of Los Angeles and Lee of Fall City, WA and her darling, Jennifer, Lees' wife. Her two wonderful grandchildren, Benjamin and Rachael are her legacy. We know that she was proud of us and we will miss her terribly. Betty A. Carrington, 53, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away Thursday, August 13, 1998 at Northwest Hospital after losing her battle with cancer. Visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 21, 1998 at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern in Tucson. Burial will be 11:00 a.m.Saturday, August 22, 1998 at Evergreen Cemetery. Betty Carrington was born in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. Betty worked as a Legal Secretary for 35 years. She also wrote her book, 'Judicial Carousel, 'assisted her clients in dealing with attorneys, taught classes and appeared on radio and TV in effort to help people with their legal problems. Betty Carrington is survived by her son, Kevin O'Grady, Esq. AZ; her sisters, Dolly Paige, NY and Lillian Proch, AZ and her brothers, Johnny Allegro, NY, Raymond and Anthony Allegro, FL. She was too loving to be taken at such a young age. She loved to help people and the many people she touched know what a blessing she was. She will always be loved and remembered. God Bless.

COFFEE, Eunice B. (Jerry), began her life journey September 10, 1911 in Eminence, Missouri. She came to Arizona as a Harvey Girl working at the Harvey House on the Santa Fe Railroad in Ashfork, Arizona. It was there she met and married Raymond H. Coffee who passed on in 1983. They were married 50 years. She completed her life journey on August 19, 1998 in Tucson, AZ. She is survived by her daughter, Lynne G. Sowles (Kenneth M.); grandchildren, Rani Lynne Bowdon of Palatine, Illinois, Brent C. Bowdon (Alice) of Patagonia, Arizona, Lisa Sowles of Sonoita, AZ, Melanie Baur (York) and great-grandchildren, Alex and Tiana Baur of Seattle, WA; sister, Bernice Bolin of Eminence, Missouri; four nieces and their families and many friends. At her request there will be no services. Remember her when you see a beautiful sunset, a lovely flower in your garden or hear the birds sing. We will all miss her. DUNCAN, Richard Kenneth, 84, died August 20, 1998. Father of Rosalie Duncan Rowell and Donald Richard Duncan; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by wife, Donna Duncan and daughter, Teresa Sereano. He was a member of Arizona Shuffle Board Association. Memorial Mass 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 24, at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1800 S. Kolb Rd. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. GONICHON, James J., 83, of Tucson, AZ, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 1998 at the Family Hospice Care Center in Tucson. He was born on January 10, 1915 in Attleboro, MA. First child of Bertha A. and Charles Paul Gonichon. Mr. Gonichon grew up and graduated from schools in Alton, NH and was graduated from the University of New Hampshire, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII from 1942-1945. He was a member of VFW. Mr. Gonichon retired from Davis Monthan Air Force Base in 1982. He was preceded in death by his parents and spouse of 40 years, Katherine Siener Gonichon. He is survived by his children, Cynthia (Kenneth) Lowe of CO and Anita Campbell of PA, Leona Plummer of CO and Leon Jesser of CA; sisters, Mrs. Constance Clayton of FL and Mrs. Carol Vasel of OH; three grandchildren; 10 nieces and nephews and one great nephew. Services will be held Monday, 10:00 a.m., EVERGREEN MORTUARY. Interment, Evergreen Cemetery. LEVY, Lewis D. Cavaletto, born September 21, 1960. Went to our lord on August 12, 1998. Survived by daughter, Holly E. Levy; mother, Estella C. Levy; father, Anthony B. Levy; brothers, Anthony C. Jr. (Lupita) and Francisco; sisters, Leslie (Mike) Carney and Brenda (Austin) Parrott; grandmothers, Catalina F. Cavaletto and Mary B. Levy; three nieces and a nephew. Union member of Local IBEW 191 in Washington State. Memorial Mass will be held Saturday August 22, 10:00 a.m. at Santa Cruz Church.

ORTEGA, Florencio V., 81, of Tucson, passed away August 20, 1998. Preceded in death by wife, Socorro N. Ortega. Survived by daughters, Yolanda, Frances (Felix), Rosa (Carlos), Lupe (Mike), Mary (Joe), Margie, Martha (Tony) and Corie (Ruben); son, Jesus 'Chuy'. Also survived by 26 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 24, 1998 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. Stone Ave. with a Vesper Service at 7:00 p.m. Final Services will be offered on Tuesday, August 25, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. PASTERNACK, Shirley, 76, of Tucson, died August 19, 1998. She is survived by her husband, Dr. A. Bernard Pasternack of Tucson; sons, Kenneth Pasternack of Goleta, CA and Roland Pasternack of Palo Alto, CA; brother, Irving Brenner of Palo Alto, CA and granddaughter, Sofia Pasternack. RIESGO, Margartia A., 91, of Tucson, passed away August 19, 1998. Preceded in death by husband, Francisco Riesgo; sons, Frank Jr. and Ramon A. Riesgo. Survived by daughter, Mary Carmen Borboa (Pete) sons, Edward (Esperanza) and Mike A. (Mary) Riesgo; sisters, Tilly Verdugo and Dolores Scoggins; grandsons, Ramon II Riesgo (Cecilia), Pete Jr. (Barbara) Borboa and Paul Riesgo; granddaughters, Bettina Riesgo and Stephanie Rodriguez. Survived by 41 grandchildren; 82 great-great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 23, 1998 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. WEISS, Victoria, 83, of Tucson, AZ, passed away August 19, 1998. She is survived by son, George (Bianca) Kilborn, Chicago, IL; grandchildren, Laura and George Kilborn; and great-grandchildren, Alex and Michael. CURIEL, Richard V., age 27, of Tucson, died August 21, 1998. He is survived by his father, Richard of Flagstaff; and grandparents, Auedelio and Mary L. Curiel of Tucson. Funeral Service will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 25, 1998 at ARIZONA MORTUARY, 7 E. University Blvd at Stone. HOFFMAN, Philip Darrel, 82, of Vail, AZ went to be with our Lord on August 18, 1998. He was a wonderful person. An unselfish man with a big heart, always a kind word and a beautiful voice. He proudly served his country in World War II as a member of the U.S. Army Remount and in Special Services Entertainment Division. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union for 46 years, as well as a Rancher who loved the outdoors and wide open spaces. He will be greatly missed by his wife and partner of 52 years, Madonna and his children, Paul (Sharon) of Michigan, James (Carlene), John (Vickie), Pete (Joyce), Philip, Martha, Phyllis (Gary) Wood, Madonna (Brad) Hupp, Linda (Duane) Scott, Mary (Lonnie) Dull, Esther (Ron) Gamble of Arizona; his 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his sisters, Betty Andrea, Lucille King and Dottie Yeager; brothers, Joe (Josephine) and Albert of PA. He was preceded in death by sons, Steve and Joe; parents, Minnie and Charles; sisters, Lillian and Mertle; brothers, Ernie and Allen. Memorial Service will be held at Casas Adobes Baptist Church, 2131 W. HUFF, John Robert, 77, of Tucson, went to be with the Lord August 21, 1998. John was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Theodore; sister, Mary; granddaughter, Debbie. John is survived by his wife, Pauline; daughters, Sharon Kennedy, Lois (Jack) Au of Ohio; daughter, Rachael (Dave) Dusz of Tucson; sons, John (Mary Ann) Guy of Ohio, Ted (Rhonda) Huff of Idaho; sisters, Dorothy Hutson, Elsie Stoller, Madeline Bartholow and Barbara Thompson; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. Huff served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member of the Am. Vets. Funeral Services 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, 1998 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave., with burial to follow at South Lawn Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends Tuesday, August 25 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY. LIGOCKI, Eleanor V., passed away at Tucson Medical Center on August 20, 1998. She was born on May 12, 1916 in Chicago, IL. She came to Tucson about two years ago from Hawaii. Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Rose Marie (Arnold) Urban, Sr. of Tucson; and sons, Ralph Ligocki of Baltimore, MD; and Lenny Ligocki who is stationed at the Naval Base in Guam. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will take place on Tuesday, August 25 at 1:00 p.m. at the ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd (at Speedway).

MUNDT, William Edward, 77, died August 21, 1998. Husband of Helen Mundt; father of Peggy (Allan) Hendry; brother of Mary Mundt, M. Carlene Mundt, Gene Mundt, and Winnie Mielke. William was an Ordained Deacon at Eastside Southern Baptist Church and also Chief Mst. Sgt. in the U.S. Air Force. William was part of the liberation of Paris during WWII and was also a Purple Heart Recipient. Cryptside Service 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 26, 1998 at Our Lady of the Desert Mausoleum. NEWELL, Joanne J., 65, of Tucson, died August 22, 1998. Joanne was born on January 11, 1933 in Lakeside, AZ. Wife of Jimmy Newell of Tucson; mother of William J. (Mary) Newell and James P. (Lucy) Newell, both of Tucson; three grandchildren, Jason, Bradley, and Becky; sister of Susan Scoggin of Sierra Vista, AZ. Funeral Service Tuesday, August 25, 1998 at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Curt Lunsford officiating. Visitation one hour prior to Service time at ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3435 N. 1st Ave. (888-1111)

James John Norville
Jim Norville died on July 16, 1998 in Anchorage, Alaska from complications arising from a head injury sustained while rollerblading. A Memorial Mass will be offered at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 8650 N. Shannon Rd. on Saturday, August 29 at 12:00 noon.
Jim was born in Chicago, Ill on January 7, 1953 and moved to Tucson with his family in 1964. He graduated from Salpointe High School in 1970 and later received his MS Degree at the University of Arizona. He was an avid bicyclist and was president of the Tucson Chapter of Greater Arizona Bicycle Association in 1997.
Jim was a gentle, fun loving man who was kind to everyone. He was a loving son, brother and father. His warm compassionate nature, generous spirit and incessant smile will be missed by all.
He is survived by his son, Danny of Phoenix; parents, Allan and Alfie Norville of Tucson; sisters, Patti (Corey) Spector of Tucson, Cher Norville of Phoenix; brother, Michael (Billie) Norville; nieces, Michelle, Reena and Lexie and nephews, Jason, Dylan, Miles, Austin, Benjamin and Jordan. Memorial donations may be sent to American Diabetes Assoc, 40 N. Swan Rd., Tucson, AZ 85711.
