JAMES BURRELL MEIGS, JR.
1917 – 1998
Born in Chicago, Illinois, son of J.B. Meigs, advertising director of Hearst's 'American Weekly', and Dorothea Skinner Meigs. Attended Todd School for Boysin Woodstock, Illinois, then Ashville School in North Carolina. After graduating from Ashville, he attended Iowa State University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1939 having majored in animal husbandry. He also played football for the Iowa State team and was a member of the Phi Kappi Psi fraternity. During his years at Iowa State, he saved his lunch money to afford flying lessons which led to his becoming one of the youngest Captains in the U.S. Air Force where he served as Chief Pilot of the South Pacific ATC, and was said to be one of the finest pilots by many of his contemporaries. During college, he and his best friend Henry Wilder toured the country on their Harley-Davidson Hogs, sometimes preaching at small churches around Iowa.
He came to Arizona in 1945 to manage the family ranch in the San Rafael Valley near Patagonia. He had great love for his country and dabbled in politics. He was Chief Flight Instructor at Marana Air Field while working in the insurance business.
He resided in Palm Beach, Florida from 1963 to 1990 where he owned and operated a European antique business allowing him to travel extensively around the world.
His true passion was aviation, logging over 13, 000 hours. He was a true outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman and an athlete. He loved all good music and could sing most of it.
Survived by his wife, Maria Smith Meigs; and his four children, James B. (Colleen) Meigs III of Tucson, Leslie A. Meigs of California, Heidi M. Baldwin and Tyler A. (Stephanie) Meigs, both of Tucson; and his nine grandchildren; his brother, William S. (Patricia) Meigs of Tucson; and sister, Barbara Taylor of California.
He led a rich, full life and will be greatly missed by many.
Memorial Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 9, 1998 at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave.
Steve H. Moreno, 83, of Tucson, passed away September 3, 1998. Survived by wife, Jessie B. Moreno; sons, Steve B. Moreno (Lupe), Joe Lopez (Irma) and Richard Lopez (Diane); daughters, Delia and Stella Lopez. Also survived by 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. ROMERO, Filomena 'Nena', age 74, a 45 year resident of Tucson, passed away September 5, 1998. Born July 5, 1924 in Tornillo, Texas. Mrs. Romero is predeceased by her husband, Ernesto. Survived by her daughters, Graciela (Mike) Vega, Gloria (Rudy) Olvera, Estella (Carlos) Romero, Anna (Ricardo) Rascon; son, Ernesto (Christina) Romero, Jr; grandchildren, Selina, Ana, Elena, Ricardo, Jr., Ofelia, Alessandra, Analiza, Michael Jr., and Patrick; brothers, Faustino, Diego, Jose and Eusebio (Mary Lou) Rosales; many nieces and nephews. SLAMA, Richard 'Dick' 72, of Tucson, a WWII Veteran, died September 3rd, 1998. Dick was born in Milwaukee, WI and moved his family to Tucson in 1973. Dick wasan avid sports fan and die hard Greenbay Packer fan. BANNER, Joseph Piatak, age 84, of Tucson, Arizona and Gary, Indiana, died September 8, 1998. He was a local business owner for 50 years as well as an inventor and prospector. He is survived by daughters, Andrea Milligan, Patricia Wilson and Mariam Law; son, Michael Banner; granddaughter, Rachel Flint; grandsons, Robin Milligan, Todd Wilson and Jason Wilson; great-grandchildren, Kristin Wilson and John Wilson. Joseph's passions were his faith, family and friends, without which he would have felt his life incomplete. BRONSON, George Sherman – aka 'Papa' 62, born October 17, 1935, died at home of cancer September 2, 1998. Survived by wife, Jean; daughters, Carolyn Bronson and Sherrilynn (F.W. 'Jesse') James of Scottsdale, Pamela Gordon of Tampa, FL and grandsons, Jayson James and Justin James; sister, Helen (Richard) Gillette of Benson, AZ. Preceded in death by parents James and Lucille Bronson and grandson, Larry Gordon. He attended Ouachita Baptist College of and U of Ark. – Fayetteville. For over 40 years George thrived on managing challenging construction projects. From a pipe-line bridge in Alaska, a power line in Zaire, light rail transit in Manila, to a 5 star hotel in Barcelona – he loved them all. Other international projects took him to Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and Canada, domestic projects in Calif, Colo, Ark, Ariz, Tex, NJ and FL. His pithy advice was, 'Do the best you can with the tools you've got.' We are grateful for sharing his adventurous life and the preciousness of his final days. His larger than life presence will be missed by his family and a host of friends around the world.
