Born to Ethyl Griffin and Ayles Sales in Louisiana on May 16, 1914, she moved with her family to Tucson as a teenager. She met her late husband, Bruce, while attending the University of Arizona and was married August 8, 1936. As an alumna of the University, Mrs. Knapp was an active member of the President's Club, participating in many of its activities. She was also a board member of the University Alumni Association and served on the committee that created the alumni travel office. As a member of the Tucson Golf and Country Club, Mrs. Knapp enjoyed playing golf with the many friends she made over the years. Her activities included the Junior League of Tucson, serving as president for two terms 1947-1949. A member of Delta Gamma sorority, she was involved with the University's chapter as an alumna. She served as President of the Board of Visitors of St. Luke's in The Desert and was an active member of St. Phillip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, teaching Sunday School for several years. A graceful, sophisticated woman with a keen eye for fashion and an artistic flair, she will be remembered as a favorite fashion model for many community charity events. Mrs. Knapp traveled extensively and also enjoyed attending Wildcat athletic events with her husband, Bruce. She was a woman who relished spending time with her grandchildren and made that a priority. Her friends would tell her she was crazy to have her four grandchildren stay with her for two weeks every summer, but their opinion didn't deter her. She said she wouldn't give up those summer weeks for anything in the world…even when the grandchildren practically destroyed her house. 'She was such a cool grandma, ' says her granddaughter, Kathryn Knapp of Sacramento.' Even as a little kid, I got along with her so well. I'll always have those wonderful memories. Her loving to have us there was always obvious. I think that, for me, makes her a special lady, ' added Kathryn. Her husband, A.
