Mary Frances Barthels, 85, died October 31, 1998 in Abilene, Kansas. She was born in Dresden, Tenn. on May 5, 1913, the daughter of Dolphus and Violet Antoinette Duke Bruce. When she was five years old, her family moved to Tucson.
Mary Frances, known to her friends as 'Bruce, ' grew up with Tucson – where she lived until moving to Abilene in 1991.
She was known for her strong spirit, her wit and her disarming sense of humor. An exceptionally loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, she gave all of herself to her loved ones.
She was a member of the Catalina United Methodist Church and the Tucson Women's Symphony. She also served on the St. Luke's in the Desert Board of Visitors.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwynne Barthels Pedersen; a son, Daniel Barthels; and a grandson, Erik Pedersen.
She is survived by her daughter, Toni Schwarting (Steve) of Abilene; son, Richard Barthels (Donna) of Woodinville, Wash.; sister, Ellen Binkley of Lexington, KY; daughter-in-law, Joanne Barthels of Bellevue, Wash.; and son-in-law, Lars Pedersen (Olivia) of Tucson.
Other survivors include her 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Ann-Eve Pedersen (Pete Eckerstrom) of Tucson; Mike Barthels (Cathrin) of Washington and their son, Corey Hunter; Matt Barthels (Lauren) of Washington; Hans Pedersen of New York; John Schwarting (Anne Marie) of Kansas and their son, Andrew Patrick; Ted Schwarting of New Mexico; Erin Kerber (Charles) of Washington; Scott Schwarting of Kansas; Greg Barthels (Jennifer) of Texas; Gwynne Barthels of Washington; Christian Pedersen of Tucson; Alexander Pedersen of Tucson; Seth Barthels of Washington and Annie Schwarting of Kentucky.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, in the chapel at Catalina United Methodist Church, 2700 E. Speedway, with Rev. Hal Cowart officiating. Burial will follow. BOOTH, Mary Gannon, 66, of Tucson, passed away suddenly from respiratory failure on November 2, 1998 at the Tucson Heart Hospital. Mary was born in Ireland on May 15, 1932 and immigrated to Boston in 1950 and has been a resident of Tucson since 1958. Mary will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. She was also a grandmother to the numerous children who came through her doors 24 hours a day. She gave of herself without seeking recognition and was considered an 'ANGEL' to the many less fortunate whose lives she touched. She was one of the first (Youth on Their Own) volunteer parents and will be greatly missed by her YOTO children and the organization. She is survived by her daughters, Marsha (P.J.) Ives of Washington, Gidget (Gary) Goodrich of Tucson, Rea of Washington; sons, Lewis (Lisa) and Lloyd both of Washington. She is also survived by her mother, Mary Gannon; brother, Michael; sisters, Annie, Patricia and Teresa all of Ireland. Rita and Sally of England and Josie of New York. She was preceded in death by her father, John of Ireland; her son, Richard of California and grandson, J.P of Washington. BULLINGTON, Mr. Billy Neil, 70, of Newark, AR, formerly of Tucson, AZ, died Tuesday, November 3, 1998. He was a 1946 graduate of Sulphur Rock High School. He worked in commercial construction during his career. Then later from 1984-1990, he was employed as a construction superintendent for T.L. Roof of Tucson. He was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church, a member of the Newark Civic Club, and he was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Glenda (Walker) Bullington of Newark; three sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Sue Bullington of Tucson, Keith and Gayle Bullington of Yuba City, CA, James and Mary Bullington of Tucson; two brothers, Tom Bullington of Tucson, John Bullington of San Diego, CA; three sisters, Jo Haney of Tucson, Patricia Camp of La Mirada, CA, Amy Humphries of Stockton, CA; seven grandchildren; two great-granddaughters. Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Newark First Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Goodwin officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Springs Cemetery. HARRINGTON, Mildred Kjentsrud, was born September 24, 1916 in Finley, North Dakota and passed away October 29, 1998 at Tucson Mountain Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold G. Harrington. They are survived by their son, H. Gregory Harrington who has been residing with his mother in Tucson. Millie spent most of her early life in eastern North Dakota and moved to Tucson in 1969 where she worked for many years as a secretary at Pima Community College. She was an active member of Casas Adobes Congregational Church and was involved in supporting many Christian related organizations. There will be a memorial service Thursday, November 5th at Casas Adobe Congregational Church, 6801 North Oracle at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted by Casas Adobes Congregational Memorial Fund.
KEVERN, Dorothy P., born in Lakewood, Ohio, died Tuesday, November 3, 1998 at age 80. Dorothy was a resident of Mesa, Arizona and a member of the Mesa Elks Club and Past President of the Am. Vets Auxiliary Post 186 (Mansfield, Ohio); she was a championship bowler and junior bowling instructor for many years. Survivors include daughter, Kathie Stecher; sons, Ric and Henry Kevern; brothers, Joseph Race and Michael 'Bill' Race; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. MACK, Lawrence G., 84, of Tucson, died Monday, November 2, 1998. Mr. Mack moved to Tucson in 1955 and worked for Jacome's Department Store in boys and mens department, retiring in 1962. He was a veteran of WWII, seeing action in the South Pacific, retiring with the rank of Captain. Mr. Mack is survived by wife, Mary; daughters, Judy Mack of Page, AZ and Nanci Mack of San Diego. Albertsen, Jimanna (Jimmie). On November 3, 1998, Jimmie Albertsen passed away after an eight-month battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, John; son, Mark (Misty); daughter, Kris (Dennis) Scalpone; grandchildren, Chad and Rick Albertsen and Michelle and Julie Scalpone; and brother, Bob (Lindy) Beale and sons, James and Robert of El Paso, Texas. She was a native of Texas, and following several Air Force assignments, moved to Tucson in 1974. Jimmie began working for the Tucson Unified School District in 1974, helping to resolve desegregation issues, and retired in 1997 as Director of Staff Services to the Governing Board. She was a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church and participated in the church choir. She was an avid reader, loved to travel, and enjoyed music and the arts. She was the embodiment of agape love for her family, friends and colleagues, and her passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 7 at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 9252 E. 22nd Street, Tucson. Robert D. Dugan, CMSgt, USAF, Ret., 65, died November 3, 1998. Preceded in death by father, Raymond 'Joe' Dugan. Survived by mother, Elenora Dugan of Chester, IL; Alma, his wife of 46 years; children, Cindy (Todd) Eman, Rhonda (Hal) Chandler, Dirk Dugan, Dante Dugan; grandchildren, Brett and Erin Eman, Caitrin Chandler, Samantha and Jamie Dugan and their mother, Missy, all of Tucson.
Bob happily devoted 31 years of his life to his country, retiring from the USAF in 1983. Bob always felt privileged that the Air Force allowed him to work on airplanes. His love of his work was unparalleled. Bob's legacy to his children was one of integrity, honesty and great pride in this country.
The family extends a special thanks to the people at Casa de Dios, not just for the excellent care they gave Bob, but for becoming his second family. Words cannot express our gratitude.
