Barbara Chesney Kennedy - Born in Pittsfield, MA March 24, 1911, died peacefully at the TMC Hospice Saturday, November 14, 1998.
Barbara graduated from Smith College in 1935. She continued her studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, Denver University, the University of Arizona and with Hazel Archer, formerly of Black Mountain College.
Barbara is best known and remembered by her friends, students and admirers for her art work done with her own hand-made paper. Her interest in paper as an art form dates from 1977. She studied paper making with Don Farnsworth and David Kimball in San Francisco; with Nancy O'Bannion at Fireworks, Berkeley; John Babcock at Arcosanti at the Twinrocker and Casting Workshops in Aspen, CO.
Her art was a dedication to paper and color. 'Color, ' she has been quoted assaying, 'is my main life, my religion.'
Barbara taught art to 5th through 12th grade students at Green Fields Country Day School from 1969 to 1975. It was there that she and the well-known painter, Jim Waid, became mutual admirers and the closest of friends.
She has shown her work in Tucson over the past 10 years at numerous galleries, including the Obsidian Gallery, Dinnerware Cooperative, Pima Community College, the Tucson Museum of Art, Tohono Chul Park and most recently, in her 87th year, at the Rancho Linda Vista Gallery in Oracle. She had met only a short time ago with the staff of the University of Arizona Museum of Art, planning a retrospective showing of her work a year from now.
Barbara's work is in the permanent collections of the University of Arizona Museum of Art, the Tucson Museum of Art, Valley National Bank (now Bank One) and Ventana Canyon Resort. Such prestigious publications as Art in America, Art Space and Visual Dialogue have published her work.
Dr. James M. Kennedy, Barbara's husband of 29 years, died in 1967.
Barbara is survived by three sons, Judge James M. Kennedy (Carol), Walnut Creek, CA; Dr. Timothy Kennedy (Sally), Denver; Douglas C. Kennedy (Debby), Tucson; and seven grandchildren, Kelly, Andrew, Lauren, Will, Chesney, Jack and Nick.
The family suggests that contributions in Barbara's memory may be made to either the Tucson Botanical Gardens or the University of Arizona Museum of Art or the Tucson Museum of Art.
Barbara's many friends are invited to join her family in celebration of her life at her home, 4818 East Towner, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. next Sunday, November 22.
