Mary Susan was born March 20, 1951 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She lived in many parts of the country during her unique journey through life: Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont, California and Arizona. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. Degree in French in 1976. She met her husband, Frank in Iowa City in January 1978, and she moved to Thousand Oaks, California to join Frank in July of that year. They married on October 4, 1981 in Malibu, California, and moved to Tucson in January 1982 to begin a new life together. Mary Susan was employed by The Amphitheater School District from 1982 to 1989, and by the Pima County Community College District from 1989 to 1998.
Mary Susan was a sensitive, strong and special human being. She loved to read the classics of English and French literature, enjoyed the theater, the symphony, films, and all the visual arts. She was especially passionate about exercising, swimming and walking in beautiful places, especially Sabino Canyon, where she and Frank enjoyed many wonderful moments together. In collaboration with a friend, she translated numerous works by French poet, novelist and filmmaker, Jean Cocteau, into English. She and Frank traveled extensively, in her healthier years, to a variety of special places: France, Italy, Venezuela, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico and throughout the Continental U.S. They were especially fond of visiting America's National Parks. But, what mattered most to her was her home life. She and Frank cherished every moment they spent together, but especially the time they shared at home.
Mary Susan was loved for her warmth, her simple grace and sweetness by all who knew her. She was admired for her strength of spirit and her indomitable courage in the face of much personal adversity. She was an inspiration and a beacon of hope to many, many people during the years she fought her illness. The earth has truly lost a gentle and beautiful soul. Mary Susan, her husband, and their families would like to thank all the physicians and caregivers who gave Mary Susan and Frank the opportunity to enjoy and treasure 13 wonderful years of life they shared after she was diagnosed with her disease in 1986. While the years they shared were far too few, each was deeply cherished and greatly appreciated.
Mary Susan would want all of her and her husband's family and friends to know and remember how much each of them meant to her as she journeyed through this life. Both she and Frank are eternally grateful for sharing their lives with them, and their contributions in making Mary Susan and Frank's life together such a joy.
'Goodbye, for now my sweet angel. I'm so grateful for all the love and happiness you brought and gave to me so selflessly and unconditionally. I will always love you, and your spirit will stay in my heart forever. And, I will always be your 'Little Biscuit Boy'.
Love, Frank
As Mary Susan requested, there will be no public services for her. She asked that if family and friends would like to honor her memory, would they please make a donation to The Arizona Cancer Center Foundation or Carondelet Hospice Services, and help these organizations in their efforts to relieve the suffering and sorrow of others stricken with cancer.
