CONWAY, John W., 73, of Tucson, passed away suddenly on Sunday, January 10, 1999 in his home. He was born September 30, 1925 to Cyrus L. and Eva M. Conway in Buchtel, Ohio. He lived in Detroit, Michigan most of his life, graduating from Pershing High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, Company B. He received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Detroit Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from Wayne State University in Detroit.
John worked for the city of Detroit for 25 years, first with the Office of City Engineers and eventually as the Director of the Civic Center Department. He left the city of Detroit to open his own consulting business, managing municipal convention centers around the country. He oversaw the development and served as the General Manager of convention centers in Oakland and Santa Clara, CA. From there he became Executive Director of the Rhode Island Convention Authority, designing and establishing the Convention Center in Providence, RI. During his retirement years, he worked as a Agent for Coldwell Banker Realty in Phoenix, AZ and later as a Customer Service Representative for Richmond American Homes in Tucson, AZ until his death.
He was an active member of the 'Triple Nickles' 555th Parachute Infantry Association, American Legion, Society of Municipal Engineers, National Association of Exposition Managers, and the International Association of Auditorium Managers.
He is survived by his former wife, Norma B. Conway of Tucson; sons, Michael C. (Evelyn) and Jeffrey L. (Carlotte) Conway of Detroit, MI; daughters, Janice M. Klaassen of Las Vegas, NV and Cathleen D. (Stephen) Perrin of Ann Arbor, MI: seven grandchildren, Christina, Brandi, Joseph, David, Steven, Laura and Laurie; two great-grandchildren, Bryan and Tina; sister-in-law, Alma (Melvin) Orsben of Los Angeles, CA; brothers-in-law, Weldon (Frances) Byrd of Lansing, MI, Malcolm (Shirley) Byrd of Southfield, MI and Ralph Riddle of Lansing, MI, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at Hudgel's Swan Funeral Home, 1335 S. Swan Road (Tucson, AZ 85711) on Saturday, January 23, 1999 at 12:00 noon. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

CRUZ, Robert Pino 'Bobby' 50, of Tucson, passed away January 15, 1999. Preceded in death by father, Ignacio V. Cruz; mother, Alicia Pino Cruz. Survived by wife of 28 years, Gloria D. Cruz; son, Mario Antonio; sisters and brother, Gloria (Alex) Romero, Ignacio (Margarita) Cruz, Mary (Gilbert) Romero, Norma Alicia (Angel) Pinon and Bertha (Jesse) Rialmo. Visitation will beheld on Thursday, January 21, 1999 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Friday, January 22, 1999, 9:00 a.m. at St. Augustine's Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Mr. Cruz served in the U.S. Navy on USS Proteus/USS Huntley as a Machinist and a Golden Shell Back. Robert also worked with the WLB Eng. Co. Inc. He leaves behind many loving relatives and friends. Nicholas Fragnoli - Died January 17, 1999. Born in Manhattan, NY September 25, 1921. Served in 354th Infantry and Regular Army Airforce. Resided before moving to Tucson in Long Island, New York and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Survived by his loving wife, Maria Cristina Silvera Fragnoli. Visitation will be at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway Blvd, Tucson, AZ (520) 881-0338 on Wednesday, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Pius X, 1800 N. FRANKLIN, Viola M., 84, died Saturday, January 16, 1999 in Tucson. Survived by three daughters, Gloria Smith, Carolyn Franklin and Sharon Levin; two sons, Kerry Franklin and Roy Franklin; one sister, Fern Doll; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and by a very special loving friend, Henry Madrid. FURHMANN, Herbert F., 87, of Tucson, died January 16, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Hilde; daughter, Inga Lawrence and grandson, Jess Lawrence. Services will be private. HESKETH, William Howard, 82, died Friday, January 15, 1999, following a long illness. Predeceased by his son, Peter, Mr. Hesketh (Bill) is survived by his loving and devoted wife Marguerite (Miggy) to whom he had been married for 58 years; daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Enrique Aviles; and her children, Michael and Heather Thompson; daughter Sharon Lyons and her children Donald and Kimberly Simko; great-grandson, Nicholas Simko; niece Billie Jo Chicoria and her children Holly and Joey, and long-time family member Primitiva Casanova.
A student of Washington and Lee and graduate of Clarkson College of Technology, Mr. Hesketh began his career-long service to the petroleum industry with Standard Oil of New Jersey in 1941. After discharge from the U.S. Army Air Force (1943-45), he continued with ESSO Research and Engineering, then Standard Vacuum, and finally Mobil Oil which took him and his family to Barrancabermeja, Colombia; Bombay, India; Manila, Philippines; Melbourne, Australia; Tokyo, Japan; and to his last assignment before retirement to Paris, France where he was Regional Deputy and then Manufacturing Manager for Mobil Mediterranean and Africa, Inc.
He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. In addition, and reflecting his keen life-long desire to serve others, he was a member of rotary clubs in Columbia, the Philippines and Australia and of school boards in India, the Philippines, and Australia.
He and his wife retired in 1971 to Tucson, Arizona where he enjoyed the company of his extended family and he continued his hobbies of golf, swimming and genealogy. An avid history enthusiast, he was a member of the Sons of the Revolution and the Huguenot Society.
At Mr. Hesketh's request, no services were held. Caring arrangements have been made by ADAIR Funeral Homes. A celebration of his life will be held for relatives and close friends at a later date.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions may be made to the Tucson Public Libraries in recognition of his life-long love of reading.

HILLARY, Frank M. 'Pancho' 75 of Tucson, passed away Friday, January 15, 1999. Survived by two former wives, Mary G. Hillary and Debra L. Hillary; daughters, Frances C. Moisa, Trini I. Goebel, Marie M. Hillary, Gumersinda Hillary Cruz; son, James W. Hillary. Also survived by 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 1999 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at San Martin De Porres, 418 W. 39th St. (South Tucson) with rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Thursday, January 21, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at San Martin de Porres. Interment to follow at Monte Calvario Cemetery, at New Pascua. Mr Hillary was a former Police Commissioner and City Councilman of South Tucson. He was also a Former Member of Comite Yaqui De La Fe. HODGERS, Hector Manuel, 81, of Tucson, AZ, passed away January 17, 1999. He is survived by wife of 58 years, Carmen; son, Dr. John H. Hodgers and daughter-in-law, Jan of Seattle, WA; daughter, Sylvia H.Romero and son-in-law, Albert; grandchildren, Kathy Stepanski, Richard Romero, Stephanie Romero, Kristy Hodgers, Misty Green and Lisa Hodgers; great-grandchildren, Brianna Romero, Branden, Kaylee, Christopher and Cody Stepanski and Jonathan Green; brothers, John, Dr. Astolfo and Arnulfo Hodgers and sister, Socorro Garcia. MONTAGUE, Rodney Theodore, passed away January 16, 1999 in Tucson, AZ. He was born in Marshall, MO December 7, 1921. Attended Central Methodist Collegein Fayette, MO. He attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and after graduating he acted in the Barter Theater in Virginia, directed by Bob Porterfield. Eventually he went to Los Angeles (Hollywood) CA and after some minor acting jobs went to work for Gracie Allen and George Burns as their personal secretary and spent 18 years with them. For a time he operated a decorating and refinishing shop in the Melrose Decorators District before retiring and moving to Tucson to join family. He is survived by a sister, Dorothy Montague Potter; niece, Carolie Sherard; nephew, Lawrence Charles Potter and sister-in-law, Kay Montague and five nephews and nieces. Memorial Service 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd., an Aftercare Provider.

RADY, Conrad, 83, of Tucson, died January 18, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; daughters, Carol Louis, Paulett Reimer, Donna Garner (Larry), Deborah Lindsey (Gary); grandchildren, Thomas, Paul and Joseph Louis, Maggie Reimer, Lara Beth Garner, Lyle Lindsey; great-grandchild, Emma Marie Louis; sister, Olga Kolesar. PROSKE, Dietrich Wilhelm, resident of the Ambassador Apts. at the Forum in Tucson died peacefully in his sleep on January 17, 1999. He was born in Silesia, Germany on May 23, 1915. He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth nee Schmidt-Salzmann; his daughter, Bettina Proske Walker; and grandson, R. Dietrich Walker. His family and friends will gather for a celebration of his life on Friday, January 22 at 7:00p.m. at the Ambassador Apts. of the Forum, 2500 N. Rosemont Blvd., Tucson.

JACKSON, Mary Margaret 'Peggy', age 55, moved to Tucson in 1964 from Washington, D.C. She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters, Shelle Jackson and Jennifer (Scot) Jackson; grandson, Dresden whom she adored; brothers, Richard (Nancy) Talley and William (Jo) Talley; sister, Kathleen McKenna and her mother, Mary Margaret Talley. SCHWARTZ, Devona M., 83, passed away on January 18, 1999 at her home in Tucson, Arizona after a prolonged illness. She is survived by her husband, Alphonse M. (Sheik) Schwartz and daughter, Margaret 'Maggie' R. (Robin) Lee of Tucson; sons, Robert E. (Glenna) Schwartz of Greenacres, WA, Gerald M. (Nyla) Schwartz of Kenmore, WA, Vincent D. (Claudia) Schwartz of Star, Idaho; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Born January 13, 1916 in Clarkston, WA to Emory R. and Elizabeth F. Clouse, she completed Registered Nurse's training and worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lewiston, ID. She married Alphonse on October 19, 1938. In 1946, they purchased and began operating the 'South Fork Station', on the South Fork of the Clearwater River, 18 miles east of Grangeville, ID, where they remained until she retired in 1981. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW in Grangeville. Services will be held in Idaho. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway

SEARLES, Carl A., age 92, went to be with our Lord and Savior on January 18, 1999. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Grace; children, Norma (Joe) and Charles (Deanna); grandchildren, Mike (Denise), Margie (Ed), Charlene, Mark and Julie (Paul); great-grandchildren, Heather (Doug), Missy, April, Matthew, Julio, Amanda, Savanna, Vanessa and Austen; great-great grandchild, Logan. Born in Hinkley Ridge, Ohio on May 25, 1906. married his sweetheart on February 6, 1929. Carl and his family moved to Tucson in 1953 where he was custom homebuilder in Tucson until he retired in 1963, then enjoying woodworking and finishing as a hobby. He attended Eastside Baptist Church for many years until he was no longer able to drive. Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, January 21, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at South Lawn Cemetery, 5401 S. Park Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Gospel Rescue Mission.'He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Sam William Baar, 81, of Tucson, died January 16, 1999. Survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth Towell Baar; sons, Sam W. Jr. (Connie) of Tempe, Michael (Linda) of Mesa, Peter (Tiennette) of Phoenix; daughters, Nanci (Jeff) Saksek of Tucson, Bonnie Hochuli of Tempe; 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth (Robert) Cherry of Oswego, IL. Mr. Baar was a 1937 graduate of Lyons Township Junior College. He attended U of I and Armour Institute. He and his wife moved from LaGrange, IL to Phoenix in 1944. He became VP and General Manager of Neil B. McGinnis Equipment Co., Phoenix until he moved to Tucson to affiliate with the Road Machinery Co. in 1965. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the name of Sam William Baar to an education scholarship of one's choice.

BANKS, Elizabeth Rose Hawley 'Betty', 83, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, January 20, 1999 in Tucson, AZ. She was born September 30, 1915 to John Francis and Rose Sullivan Hawley in Sandstone, MN. Elizabeth graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN with a Bachelors Degree in Education. She taught high school in Crosby Ironton, MN and later substitute taught in the Duluth school district. She married John L. Banks, Jr. on December 30, 1941. She and John had just celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. Besides her parents, Elizabeth was predeceased by brothers, Eldon and Robert Hawley and a sister, Aileen Brown. Sons, Lt. John L. Banks, III and PFC David L. Banks in Vietnam. She is survived by her husband, John of Tucson, AZ; sons, James L. and Peter H. of Superior, WI; daughters, Elizabeth H. Banks of Superior and Nancy A. Banks of Tucson; six grandchildren also survive. Pallbearers will be David John Banks, Bridget Rose Banks, Christy Elizabeth Sunshine Banks Charles, Georgia Louise Banks, John L. IV and Peter James Banks. Visitation will be at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ Friday, January 22, 199 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a vigil service from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 23 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo. There will be a Memorial Service and inurnment at Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, WI this coming summer. BARTHOLOMEAUX, Katherine 'Kitty' Kern, age 81, passed away peacefully on January 15, 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul. She is survived by her children, Judy, Sister Jeanne, Mary Pat, Betty (John) Dadante, Tom, Joe and Arlie Miller; grandchildren, Paul, James Roberts V, Julie and Andrew; great-grandchild, Anthony and extended family Fran Bartholomeaux, Berry Roberts and Joanne Kernechel. Kitty has been a resident of Tucson since 1932. She was active in Sword and Key, USO, Girl Scouts, SS Peter and Paul, St. Francis Cabrini and Salpointe. She was a retired Nurses Assistant at TMC. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated Saturday, January 23, 1999, 2:00 p.m. at St. Francis Cabrini Church, 3201 E. Presidio. Visitation will be Friday, January 22, 1999 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at the church.
