LAVOUI, Germaine (Bettez) 81, formerly of Epping and Manchester, NH, died in Tucson on January 27, 1999. She was born in Sherbrooke, Canada to Rodolphe and Clara (Grandmont) Bettez of Manchester, NH. She retired from GTE Sylvania in Exeter, NH in 1981 and enjoyed golf and ballroom dancing. She is survived by sons, Frank of Colorado and Robert of Alaska; daughters, Anne-Marie and Carol Lavoie and Diane Cassidy of Arizona; brother, Tony Bettez of Washington; three grandsons and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Frank who died in 1997 and her sister, Lorette Brouillard. She had a smile for everyone and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Services will be private. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY, an Aftercare Provider.

MAYER, Ruth Adams, 89, passed away January 20, 1999. She was a resident of Tucson since 1946, after moving from Milwaukee. Ruth's parents were William and Louise Adams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Mayer who passed away July 13, 1998. She and Pete, college sweethearts married 1932, he was her 'Presh' and they shared a life of love and devotion. In 1932 she graduated from Lake Forest College, she never stopped reading and had many varied interests. Her son, Peter A. (Joanne) Mayer; grandchildren, Peter L. (Anne) Mayer, Pam (Jim) Gates, Patricia (Joseph) Dorgan, Peggy (Rick)Taylor; six great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, Elyse (David) Daoust and Tony Oskins, and three step great-grandchildren will miss her cheerful and sunny smile, her enthusiasm and zest for life. She had been an active and giving member of our community for many years. Ruth and Pete loved to travel and have fun. Her many friends were an important part of her life. Ruth was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church after moving to Tucson. Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be at 4:00 p.m.Saturday, January 30 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 400 E. University. Her family would like to thank the staff at ManorCare and the Carondelet Hospice Staff for the care she received. The family suggests instead of flowers, a donation be made to Carondelet Hospice, 1802 W. St. Mary's Rd., Tucson, AZ 85745. Arrangements by family owned ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.

MORGAN, Effie Abdo, born September 27, 1910, died January 27, 1999.
Formerly of Minneapolis, Minnesota, along time visitor and 18 year resident of Tucson, AZ.
Preceded in death by parents, Paul and Hosne Abdo; husbands, Raymond Dolan and Don E. Morgan; brother, John E. Abdo; sisters, Elizabeth O'Dell and Linda Markham all of Minneapolis, MN.
Survived by daughter, Rae Ann Jacob and husband, Daniel Jacob, Sr. of Tucson, AZ; son, John E. Morgan and wife, Kathleen of San Antonio, TX; sisters, Louise Jacob Larsen and Joann Abdo of Minneapolis, MN; brothers, Joseph Abdo of Los Angeles, CA, Kelly Abdo of Newport Beach, CA and Ronald Abdo of San Francisco, CA.
Her love generated nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren: Daniel Jacob, Jr., wife, Soonalyn and children, Jinnyn, Daniel III, Coury and Raymond of San Antonio, TX, Kimberly Jacob Olson, husband, Paul and son, Morgan of Phoenix, AZ, Elizabeth Jacob Wood, husband, Paul and children, Thomas and Carl of Las Vegas, NV, Jeffery Jacob, wife, Deborah and daughter, Elana Rae of Tucson, AZ, Rodney Jacob, wife, Dina and son, Marco of Tamuning, Guam, Randell Jacob, wife, Tamberly and daughter, Johanna of Tucson, AZ, Patricia Morgan Davidson, husband, James and daughter, Caroline of Mpls, NM, Jennifer Morgan Mundahl and husband, Troy of Edwards, CO, Allison Morgan Fetrow, husband, Michael and son, Jack of Mpls, MN.
A Memorial Mass is scheduled at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 1999 at St. Thomas the Apostle, 5750 N. Valley View Rd.

MORROW, Elizabeth Louise, age 80, of Tucson, passed away January 28, 1999. She is preceded in death by her husband, R. Bruce Morrow and is survived by children, Robert B. (Christine) and Charles (Trudy) Morrow; grandchildren, Linda Michelle, Charles Allen (Jr.) and Lawrence R. Morrow; sister, Eva Duncan of Virginia and many nieces and nephews. Elizabeth taught school in the 1940's and was employed for 27 years with TUSD. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 1, 1999 in the Mortuary Chapel, 5401 S. Park Avenue with Rev. Dr. Martin Abraham officiating. Interment South Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mortuary Sunday, January 31, 1999 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Arrangements by SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, a Certified Aftercare Provider.

PACE, Pearl Elizabeth, 89, died January 27, 1999 in Tucson, AZ. Survived by her daughter, Maxine 'Mickey' (John T.) Gray; grandsons, J. Douglas and Keith Whitman, Jay and Russell Hoffman; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Rulon and Davis Hymas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Max L. Pace and daughter, Beverly Papi. Pearl has been a resident of Tucson for the past 5 1/2 years moving here from CA. Funeral Services and burial will be in Santa Paula, CA. RIEBEL, Richard A., 63, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 28, 1999. Survived by wife, Florence; grandchildren, Joshua, MacKenzie, Sydney and Mason Chavez; half-brother, Rodney Reuter; stepfather, Charles Reuter; numerous nieces and nephews; son-in-law, Joseph Chavez and wife, Michelle. Mr. Riebel was preceded in death by his children, Mark Riebel and Vanessa Riebel-Chavez. He was the owner of Riebel Construction. Visitation will be Friday January 29, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, an Aftercare provider, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Graveside Services follow at 2:30 p.m. at East Lawn Palms Cemetery with Pastor Glen Foster of Pantano Baptist Church officiating.

SPEARMAN, Helen Pauline, 77, died January 27, 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Hare (husband, Mike); son, Bud Spearman (wife, Doreen); grandchildren, Todd Hare (wife, Faith), Trent Hare (fiance, Lori) and Kelsey Spearman; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Kayla Hare; sister, Gwen Cogdell and many friends. Polly was born in El Paso, TX. She married Charles C. Spearman in 1941. A Tucson resident since the mid 1940's she worked at Hughes Aircraft from the early 1960's retiring in 1986. She sang with the Sweet Adelines Old Pueblo Chapter in the 1950's. Polly loved her family and friends and was loved by so many of the people she met. Visitation from 2:30 p.m. until Service time at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, January 30, 1999 at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, an Aftercare Provider, 5801 E. Grant Road. Burial to follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery. Donations may be made to The American Cancer Society or The American Heart Association.

STORY, Anita, 50, of Tucson, died January 25, 1999. Survived by children, Anthony Sandoval, Andria Bunnell; mother, Connie Ramirez. SWISHER, Dolores A. 'Dee' 67, of Tucson, died January 26, 1999. She is survived by her son, David R. Swisher of Tucson and her grandson, Parker Reilly Swisher of OR and many close friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Richard Swisher on August 5, 1998 and her son, James Donald Swisher on November 5, 1983. Mrs. Swisher was a long time employee of Tucson Water Department. Graveside Service Monday, 2:00 p.m. Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile.

WINGATE, Edna Lee Turner, the prettiest girl in Paris, Kentucky, was born March 28, 1922, the daughter of Mason and Ida Turner, passed on to the other side of life on January 23, 1999. She met and married her true love, Harry Wingate, Jr. (now deceased) in 1941. They made their home in Tucson in 1952 with their son, Dennis.
She served smiles and spread joy in the cafeteria's of Alice Vail and Booth-Fickett Middle Schools until her retirement. She was a valued and active member of the Road Runners and Dorado Golf Clubs, the Daughters of the Nile, Oriental Dancers, Elks Widows and Widowers, and Eastern Star.
Beloved mother of Dennis, and loving grandmother of Jana and Evan; devoted sister of Carrie, Frances, Alfrieda, Bobby, Bruce and Elizabeth; she will be missed by her daughter-in-law, Carol; many nieces and nephews and friends by the score.
Edna spread light, love and laughter wherever she went, she never knew a stranger. She lives on in the hearts and memories of those who were blessed to know her.
Memorial Services and interment will be at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY AND CEMETERY, 5801 E. Grant Rd. on Saturday, January 30, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TMC Hospice at 5301 East Grant Road, Tucson, AZ 85712 or your favorite charity.

BRIGHT, Richard Edward, 72, born July 14, 1926, beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather, was called by our Lord on January 26, 1999. He is survived by loving wife, Doris; daughters, Susan (Joseph) Martell, Debby (Gillam) Scogin; brother, Arthur (Eileen) Bright; sister-in-law, Alice A. Bright; aunt, Janette Bahr; grandchildren, Doug and Laurie Speckmann, Harmony Bright, Gillam, Richard and Jeffrey Scogin, Lisa and Paul Martell; great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Kevin Speckmann, and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Richard was a machinist for Tucson Electric Power, retiring after 25 years of service. Where there is love life is too short, we will miss him dearly. Whenever we see a mountain pine we will remember him in our heads and in our hearts. Our family is deeply grateful for the services and understanding given to us by the Carondelet Home Hospice staff during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, our family suggests donations be made to Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 4520 W. Ajo, Tucson, Arizona 85746. Memorial services will be held at Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 4520 W. Ajo, on Friday, January 29, at 11:00 a.m.

GAGNER, James A., 52, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 22, 1999. A Tucson resident for seven years, James' life enriched many. He deeply loved his family and friends, was a compassionate, skilled Voice Dialogue therapist, excelled as a yoga master, and courageously followed his own drummer. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Carol and John Anderson and his two brothers, Tom and Paul Gagner, and their families. An informal memorial gathering of James's friends will be held at 12:00 noon Thursday, February 4th at St. Francis in the Foothills Church.

HARRIS, Laura Thomas, 73 years old, died Friday, January 29, 1999 in Tucson. Born on September 23, 1925 in Crown Point, New York. Survived by a daughter, Corey Miller Harris of Austin, TX; brother, Tyler Thomas of San Antonio, TX; sister, Susie Gibson of Phoenix, AZ and Henry G. Zipf, Henry K. Zipf, Donold Zipf, Lourie Zipf, and two grandchildren, Stephen and Nolan. No services are planned. Arrangements by WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 881-0338.

PARRA, Virginia Regina, passed away at home on January 21, 1999. She is survived by her sister, Sara Parra; brother, Marcus Parra; nieces, Lucy Saraficio, Juanita Garcia, Rosemary Parra and Maxine Darton; nephews, Henry Garcia, Robert Cruz, David Garcia, Johnny Garcia, Francisco Parra, Gabriel Parra, Jr., Bernard Parra, Benny Darton, Michael Darton, Rudy Stewart, Henry Garcia, Jr., Marlin Garcia and Allen Garcia; grandnieces, Salina Tillman, Andrea Tso, Arlene Garcia, Sonia Garcia, Kathleen Garcia and Yolanda Garcia; grandnephews, Byron B. Parra, Bobby Saraficio, Cody Garcia, Brandon Garcia, Michael Darton, Jr., Marcus Darton. Visitation will take place on Sunday, January 31 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Nicholas Church 31st and 10th with Mass being offered at 7:00 p.m. Burial will take place on Monday morning at Rocky Point Cemetery, Rocky Point Village, AZ (ITAK).

SWARNY, Edward R., 73, of Huachuca City, passed away Monday, January 25, 1999 at his residence. He had been an area resident for 26 years. Edward was born October 26, 1925 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to Steve and Margaret (Slavick) Swarny. During World War II he served in the US Navyas a Gunner's Mate who was disabled and honorably discharged in October 1945. In 1992 he retired as a pharmaceutical sales manager for Fleming Laboratories in Tucson. Edward was a former member of Who's Who-Southeast Arizona Chapter, and a member of the Turquoise Valley Golf Course, Bisbee, AZ. He is survived by four children, Keith (Linda) Swarny of Tucson, Kathleen P. (Robert) Rouser of Johnstown, PA, Kelly L. (Steven) Tyminski of Huachuca City, AZ, Kimberly A. (Frank) Mikeusevich of Tucson; five sisters, Donna (Salvador) Jaime of Tombstone, AZ, Vivian Horner, Dorothy Moe, Dolores (Jack) Garcia and Irene (Leon) Cottrill all of Tucson, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Robert and Stephen Swarny and four sisters, Evelyn Cunningham, Katherine Schneck, Bertha Frieben and Margaret Blaschak. There will be no viewing or services in accordance with Edward's wishes; however, a small gathering is planned for family and close friends. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in the name of Edward R. Swarny to the Hospice Family Care, 2260 East Fry Blvd., Sierra Vista, AZ 85635. HOOD, George Charles Jr., 24, died January 28, 1999. He is survived by children, Ashley and George 'Charley' III; father, George Charles (Tarey) Hood, Sr.; mother, Marilyn (Kelly) Boyd; sister, Amber Hood; step-sisters, Treva and Pamela Bolton; paternal grandparents, John and Irene Hood; uncles, John A., Junior and Lynn Hood. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 1, 1999 at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, an aftercare provider, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Followed by interment at East Lawn Palms Cemetery.

Jane Etta Kurn - Jane Etta Kurn of Tucson died January 30, 1999. Survived by her four children, Barbara Katz (Robert) of Boston, MA, Neal Kurn (Bobbi) of Phoenix, Brenda Sterman (Albert) of Tucson and Dr. Sidney Kurn of Santa Rosa, CA; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Born in Dorchester, MA, to Harry and Kate Freeman and married in 1929 to the late Samuel Kurn; a marriage that lasted 63 years until Sam's death in 1992. Jane graduated from Emerson College. She directed and participated in numerous productions at Emerson College, New York City and Springfield, MA., before moving to Tucson with her family in 1948.
She served as director of Hillel Foundation at the University of Arizona in the 1950's, and for about thirty years she worked with her husband Samuel at Temple Emanu-El as program director while he was educational director and/or executive director. Over the years she prepared at least 1500 boys and girls for their Bar and Bat Mitzvah, a loving service she offered until just a few months ago. In addition, she was a marriage consultant for many years and a volunteer at Tucson Medical Center, where she worked in Labor and Delivery.
She and Sam were co-founders of the Senior Congregants at Temple Emanu-El and Jane served as program director for that organization until just a few months ago. The religious school at Temple Emanu-El is named in honor of Jane and Sam Kurn.
Memorial Service will be held in the sanctuary at Temple Emanu-El, 225 North Country Club Road Tuesday, February 2, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. Contributions are suggested to the Jane and Sam Kurn Mitzvah fund or the Jane and Sam Kurn Religious School Fund, both at Temple Emanu-El. Arrangements by VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 327-6341.

LEY, Olga Catherine Walsh (1896-1999) died on January 31, in Tucson, Arizona. Her life was marked by more than 100 years of loving services to family, friends and students. Born in Stockton, CA, and graduated from Holy name High School in Oakland, CA., and western normal school in Stockton. In 35 years as a teacher, she taught in rural schools in Solano, San Joaquin, Fresno and Calaveras counties, often lighting the firein the morning, and always enlightening her beloved students. Her husband Joseph Oliver Ley, her brothers, Harry and Carter Walsh, and her sisters Mary Alice Overholser, Nellie Walsh, Estelle Locke and Anita Corcoran all predeceased her. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Large (Keith) and Jean O'Neil (Raymond), her grandson Joseph O'Neil, and her granddaughter Catherine Webb (Roger). Following a vigil service at Wolfrey Peace Chapel at 6:30 p.m. on February 2, 1999 (Tuesday) Funeral Services and Burial will be at St. Patrick's Church in Murphys, CA. At a later date a Memorial Service will be held at St. Pius X Church in Tucson. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial gifts to the St. Patrick's Church Altar Society, c/o Box 32, Murphys, CA 95247. Local arrangements by WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway 881-0338.
