PETER JAMES ROMANO, 89, passed into a new life on Wednesday, February 3, 1999. Pete was born on May 14, 1909 in the Bronx, New York. He is survived by his loving wife, Wilma; his children, Nicholas (Joan) Romano, Rachel (Joseph) Ingegneri and Marianne (Joseph) Sandbothe. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Mr. Romano was an undertaker in New York for many years, and moved to Tucson in the early 70's. He worked as an Interior Decorator before joining St. Pius X Catholic Church as custodian until his retirement in 1984. He has been an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 10762, St. Pius X Church, after serving the Knights for over 40 years. 'Pope Pete' will be missed by all of us who knew and loved him. ANTONIO M. SANDOVAL - Who was a native of Tucson, born June 4, 1902, passed away February 2, 1999 at the age of 96. Was a truck driver for M.M. Sundt from 1940 to 1972. Preceded in death by wife, Angelita H. Sandoval; daughters, Maria Jesus S. Acedo and Conception S. Greenlee; son, Anthony Sandoval. THOMAS DONOVAN WALSH, age 99, born November 21, 1899 in Newport, KY; died February 3, 1999, Tucson, Arizona. Served in WWI as Chief Gunner's Mate aboard the USS Ammen; retired from the Newport, KY Fire Department. Survived by his wife of 74 years, Anna Beard Walsh of Tucson; son, James Walsh (Pat) of Tucson; daughter, Shirley Mastak (Ned) of Tavares, FL, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. AHLERS, Irene Delores, age 79, died February 3, 1999. Irene was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois and was a resident of Tucson for the past 48 years. Survived by her husband of 50 years, John, Veteran 3rd Infantry Division US Army, Iron Worker Union Local #75; four children, Ken Ahlers (Donna) of Tucson, Andrea Wilson of Tucson, Berta Zimdars (Lan) of Minnesota and Kris Sader (Steve) of Maine; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Survived also by her sisters, Helen Starr of Pennsylvania and Marie Ronalli of Florida, many nieces and nephews and friends. Irene was active for many years in the Tucson Opera League. Russell Milton Childs, 37, of Marana, died February 3, 1999. An Arizona resident of 36 years, he had worked as a Registered Nurse at El Dorado Hospital and subed at other local Tucson hospitals for many years. Agnes Selma Hauenstein, age 91, passed away January 23, 1999at the Handmaker Home for the Aging in Tucson, AZ. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Edward and Eugene Hauenstein and her only niece, Carolyn J. James, Mesa, AZ. Born September 3, 1903 in Gallop, New Mexico, Ms. Hauenstein moved to Tucson in 1934, where she lived since. Ms. Hauenstein worked for the U.S. Justice Department for 42 years and received during her career numerous awards and citations, including a certificate for 35 years of government service presented by then Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. After her retirement from the Tucson U.S. Attorney's office, Ms. Hauenstein traveled extensively throughout the world, including South America, Europe and the Middle East. She is survived byher great-nephews, Howard B. James III of Chicago, IL, Mark E. James of Atlanta, GA; her great-niece, Kimberly S. Lowande, Cape Coral, FL; sister-in-law, Ruth A. Hauenstein, Mesa, AZ, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Dahlquist of Garfield, KS; four great-grandnieces and several cousins. Funeral arrangements by Adair Funeral Home, Tucson, AZ. REGER, Juanita Mae, passed away February 4, 1999 while visiting family in Arizona. Preceded in death by husband, Verl Kent Reger. Mrs. Reger was born April 25th, 1917 in a railroad boxcar in the Cranberry Bogs of West Virginia. married Verl Kent Reger October 4, 1936. Survived by daughters, Verleen Edel (Bill) and Brenda Reger, residing in Tombstone, Arizona; sons, Leonard Reger of Elfrida, Arizona and Lawerence Reger (Suzanne), Tucson, Arizona. Also survived by sister, Loretta Kasten of Buckhannon, WV; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Juanita was Arizona Mother of the Year in 1977. Served on Ecumenical Council of Churches. Founding member and Director of Handi-Camp Inc, a school for handicapped children at Tucson Church of the Brethren. Mrs. Reger also served on the Governor's Commission on mental retardation and was the Audio-Visual Director for Arizona State Council of Churches. Long time resident of Tucson, Arizona and Tombstone, Arizona. In 1991 she returned to Buckhannon, West Virginia where she fulfilled a childhood dream by purchasing the Post Mansion, X Island Ave. After extensive renovations she reopened the home as a Bed and Breakfast. SONKIN, Frances, 77, of Tucson, died February 4, 1999. She is survived by daughter, Linda C. Kunsberg (Andrew); son, Bob Sonkin; and daughter, Judith H. Sonkin, all of Tucson; grandchildren, Rebecca M. Kunsberg, Sara D. Kunsberg; and sister, Rose Rudis (Joseph) of Tucson; one niece, six nephews and many great-nieces and nephews. Frances was devoted to her grandchildren, whom she greatly loved. Predeceased by husband, Isidore S. 'Sid' Sonkin, July 10, 1986. Mrs. Sonkin was an avid volunteer having spent 16 dedicated years volunteering at UMC, Casa De Los Ninos and the Veterans Hospital. She was a 47 year member of Congregation Anshei Israel. ENGEBRETSON, Mary Louise, was born March 16, 1921 to parents Horace C. and Borghild (Lenmark) Jackson in Minneapolis, Minnesota and died February 6, 1999. She was baptized and confirmed on April 2, 1944 in the Lutheran faith at Augusta Lutheran Church, Marietta, Minnesota. She attended grade school at rural Marietta and graduated from Marietta High School with the class of 1939. On January 26, 1941 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Engebretson at Marietta. While living in Minnesota she attended Augusta Lutheran Church and was secretary of the Sunday School and participated in other activities of the church. After farming on the Engebretson homestead in South Dakota until 1959, she moved with her family to Tucson, Arizona. While in Tucson she attended Redeemer Lutheran Church and was active in the Road Runner Senior group of Tucson. She is survived by her husband of 58 years; her son Douglas and wife Kathy; two grandchildren, Leif and Kristin, all of Southampton, Massachusetts; brother, Jerry and wife Mary; and sister-in-law, Judy Jackson; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Donald and Kenneth. Burial will take place in the Spring of 1999 in Marietta, Minnesota at the convenience of the family. LOHER, Ann Rodriguez, 88, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ, on February 5, 1999. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank P. Loher. Born in Globe, AZ. She came to Tucson in a covered wagon. She was very proud of her achievements at Tucson High and had her name engraved on a cup given to THS for a typing competition in 1926. She competed in Math computation at UA and received highest honors. As a Red Cross volunteer she completed nurses aide training and worked at Tucson General Hospital. In later years, she was a Federal Court Interpreter. Ann is survived by one sister, Celia McAlpin of San Diego; her children, Ileana (Joe) Olivas, Alma (Jim) Maish, and Frank (Delia) P. Loher; her grandchildren and their spouses, Joe, Ileana, Linda, Frank, Debbie, and Robert; Jim, Nancy, Doris, Nancy, Elaine, Laura; and Janet, Lorrie, Frank, Richard, and Tony; numerous great-grandchildren and several great- great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. MCQUEEN, John, of Tucson, AZ, formerly of Bloomfield, N.J., beloved husband, father and grandfather went to be with the Lord, February 6, 1999.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he is survived by his devoted wife Alma R. 'Peggy' McQueen; daughters, Sandra Strong of Sea Girt, N.J., Susan Perdomo of Glen Ridge N.J. and Isabella Wahl of Chandler, AZ; and nine grandchildren, Peggy & Tracy Strong, Jared, Douglas, Brett & Emily Deptula, Elena Perdomo, Ashley Wearly & Alec Wahl. He was the brother of William McQueen, Helen Brown and Isabella Carey, all of N.J.
Mr. McQueen, son of Charles & Isabella Denmark McQueen, left Scotland as a young boy. The family moved first to Sault Ste. Marie Canada, later settling in Bloomfield, N.J., where he graduated from Bloomfield High School and Newark College of Engineering.
Mr. McQueen began his career with National Union Radio as a Quality Control Engineer. For the next 10 years he worked for Allen B. Du Mont Laboratories, where he was engaged in the manufacturing of entertainment, military and industrial cathode ray tubes, as well as T.V. receivers. From 1959-1965, he worked for Paramount Pictures Corp. during which time the corporation licensed Sony to build and manufacture the Trinitron tube. In 1975, Mr. McQueen co-founded Southwest Vacuum Tube Devices along with two other executives of what formerly had been Griffith's Electric. From the on-set the company flourished. Mr. McQueen served as president and was responsible for all engineering. Within two years the company was employing over 100 people at its headquarters in Tucson. From 1975, until the company was sold, Mr. McQueen served as president. He took great pride and joy in his roll in building this business.
He took special pleasure in his responsibilities in transferring knowledge to Third World countries, where S.W.V.D. had become well known as a leader in electron gun design for Cathode Ray tubes.
Mr. McQueen traveled extensively fulfilling his roll to such countries as China, where the company established two manufacturing operations – India, where the company established a joint venture in My Sore. Additionally, Mr. McQueen was involved in Engineering Consulting on behalf of S.W.V.D. in many countries throughout the world.
His expertise was sought out by such industry leaders as Zenith Corporation, Chicago – I.T.T., Germany – Samtel, Dehli India – E.G.G. – U.S.A. – Lotus Engineering, Hong Kong and Hughes Missile Systems to name just a few. As a result of his travels, Mr. McQueen developed life long friendships with people all over the globe.
In 1986, the company was sold to Video Display Corp. Mr. McQueen accepted positions as Board Member and V.P. of Engineering. He continued in that capacity until his death.
John will be sorely missed by a grateful industry which he helped establish on a worldwide basis, as well as by his two partners Gerald Tumarkin and Leonard Minutillo.
