JACOME, Augustine E. 'Teen', 86, died February 7, 1999. A native Tucsonan, Teen was born at the original Jacome home on Stone Avenue downtown on July 24, 1912. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margot Turney Jacome, who still resides in the home they built 63 years ago in central Tucson. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Estela Jacome and Alberta Jacome and many, many nieces and nephews. Teen attended the Maris Brothers and Safford schools in Tucson, St. John's Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin, and two years at the University of Arizona. Teen was the youngest of 13 children born to Tucson pioneers Carlos C. Jacome and Dionicia German Jacome. As the last surviving sibling, his death marks the end of anera and closes an important chapter in the history of contributions by Mexican immigrants to Tucson. Teen's entire career was dedicated to the family store that hisfather founded, Jacome's Department Store. Along with his brothers and sisters, Teen learned the merchandising trade from the ground up–from stockboy, shipping & receiving, to inventory control, buying, and selling, selling, selling. Jacome's Department Store was always a family owned and operated business. When it closed, 84 years after its founding in 1896, it was still owned by the families of five of Carlos and Dionicia's children: Augustine, Henry, Alex, Richard and Josephine (Bloom). Teen was Vice President of Jacome's and only retired when the store closed it doors April 4, 1980. Teen spent three years in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was stationed on the island of Tinian in the Marianas. He was affiliated with the Optimists, downtown chapter, a charter member of the Caballeros del Sol, Tucson Chamber of Commerce, and SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at SS. Peter & Paul, 1946 E. Lee Street at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 13, 1999. Interment will be private. JOHNSON, Amelia, 96, passed away February 9, 1999. She was born July 1, 1902 to Eric and Augusta Stone Johnson in Woodland, ME. Survived by nieces, Virginia Christenson of Florence, MA and Rosalie Chamberlain of Saco, ME; nephew, Galen Johnson of Big Lake, AK; and several great nieces and nephews. She came to Tucson about fifty years ago and was a member of VASA and the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will take place in New Sweden, ME at the convenience of the family. ORTIZ, Mercy Aros, born September 08, 1916 died February 07, 1999. Preceded in death by husband, Ernie Ortiz; parents, Antonio L. and Dolores Montijo Aros; sister, Bertha B. Corrella. Survivors include Dolores C. Mora, niece; John David Mora (Valerie), great-nephew; Nicole and Danielle Mora, great-nieces; and Many Aros Montijo and Pellon, cousins. She graduated from Tucson High School in 1934 where she was an honor student and a member of the tennis club. She was a Soloist and Organist at Holy Family Church and Santa Rosa until she entered Villa Maria Health Care Center in 1997. Mrs. Ortiz was a descendant of the Don Antonio Aros family who settled the Aros Ranch in 1882 which is presently the La Osa Ranch in Sasabe, AZ and Manuel Montijo, a pioneer businessman and accomplished musician, her mother, Dolores Montijo Aros was a Soloist at San Augustine Cathedral for 52 years. We wish to thank the loving staff at Villa Maria especially her R.N. whose love and patience was our consolation. All contributions may be made in her memory to the Cathedral Maintenance Fund. HETLE, Dorothy Krentz, 87, passed away at Devon Gables Health Care Center on February 7, 1999. Her husband, Rasmus O. Hetle whom she married in Sitka, Alaska in 1952, preceded her in death on December 30, 1998 and her sister, Eleonor Bodenhamer, in October of 1995. Her parents were Sara and Frank Krentz. She was reared in Douglas, Arizona and attended college at ASTC. Dorothy was a talented musician and graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in music. She taught school in Arizona, California, and Alaska. When she and her husband retired they moved to Arizona and lived in Douglas and Tucson. Mrs. Hetle is survived by brothers, Jules L. (Edna) Krentz in San Bruno, CA., Stuart F. Krentz in Tucson and Robert N. Krentz, Sr. in Douglas; and sisters, Marian Brooks and Ann Prother of San Bueno, CA, Carol Riceof Chandler, AZ and Bertha Ramer of Tucson and numerous nieces and nephews. NARCHO, John Bigtree, 68, of Tucson, passed away at home February 6, 1999. Preceded in death by parents, Pablo and Annie Narcho; sisters, Agnes, Margaret and brother, Harry Narcho. Survived by wife, Mary; sons, Dean and Barney Narcho; stepchildren, Dwayne Salway (Trish), Marvin Salway (Anna), Allen Salway (Tori), Wanda Rosales (Ruben) and Annette Felix. Also survived by 15 grandchildren and many other relatives of the Tohono O'Odham Reservation. John served in the U.S. Navy, (1949-1954), member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural Ornamental and Reinforcing Ironworkers Local #75 (1955-1973), served as the San Xavier District Representative to the Tohono O'Odham Nation Tribal Council (1979-1985), served as San Xavier District Chairman (1982-1985), worked as Tribal Affairs Officer, and Executive Officer for Indian Health Services (1986-1996). John's greatest commitments were to his family, the improvement of life to his Tohono O'Odham People and to His Lord, Jesus Christ. Visitation will be held Friday, 4:30 p.m. at the San Xavier District Community Center with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered Saturday, 7:00 a.m. at San Xavier Mission. Lotus Perez - Passed away unexpectedly on January 7, 1999 in Tucson, Arizona at age 52. She was the precious fiancee and dedicated partner of Dr. Steven Gurgevich. For the past two years, Ms. Perez has split her time between her home in Pacifica, California and her home in Tucson, which she shared with her devoted partner, Dr. Steven Gurgevich. Together they co-founded Tranceformation Works, an internet-based business that provides healing resources and support for individuals and families experiencing chronic illness. This venture came out of their mutual experience of caring for spouses who had been terminally ill and their desire to help others. Ms. Perez and Dr. Gurgevich became engaged this New Year's Day at 12:01 a.m., as their first act of 1999. They hoped to be married soon.
Ms. Perez was a member and volunteer at Unity Church in Tucson, a Summa Cum Laude graduate of San Francisco State University, and a greatly respected copy editor and accomplished journalist for several Bay Area publications.
A Memorial Service and Cactus Dedication will be held Sunday, February 14, 1999, at 1:00 p.m. at Unity Church, 3617 N. Camino Blanco, with a reception afterward at their home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Unity Church.
RICHARD, Jeanne Du Charme, born in Lowell, MA November 8, 1907, daughter of Omer and Laura (Descoteaux) Du Charme, died in Tucson February 2, 1999. Mrs.Richard had a brilliant career of concert pianist over several decades. A career that covered two continents. Preceding her in death, husband, Elie Richard of St. Augustine, Florida; three brothers, Albert, Eugene and Roger Du Charme. She has one brother, Claude and his wife, Helen of Tucson, AZ; two sisters, Irene Du Charme and Rita Deneault of Lowell, MA; one son, Julian Laurier Richard of Pasadena, CA and three grandsons, Maurice, Stefan and Roger in Oregon. Cremains will be interred with her husband in the Cemetery at Pre'd'en Haut, New Brunswick, Canada. Memorial services will be held at St. Joan of Arc Chapel in Lowell, MA in April. MATTHEW DAVID SELLERS, 28, grew up in Tucson and attended St. Gregory College Preparatory School prior to graduating from Whittier College in California, where he completed a double major in biology and history. He taught science classes and coached basketball at Hamilton School in Anza, California, located in the mountains south of Palm Springs. Matt will be missed by his wife Heidi Lake Sellers and her parents Diane Lake and Quintin Lake; his mother JoAnn Sellers; his father James R. Sellers (Susan); his grandparents Ruth and Lyle Sellers; his sisters Jennifer Sellers (Ken Vorndran) and Jacquelyn Sellers (Pat Watrous); his brothers Jeffery Sellers and Joel Sellers (Susan) and his nieces Carlyn Vorndran, Alissa Vorndran and Corissa Sellers; as well as his aunts, uncles, cousins, students, fellow teachers and many friends. THOMSON, Frank Albert, of Benson, passed away February 10, 1999 in Benson. Survived by wife, Velma Thomson of Benson; niece, Angela Docker of Riverside, CA; nephews, Frank Reed of Fallon, NV, Robert Baxter of Orange, CA, and Robert Burris of Redlands, CA; grandnieces, Deirdre Browner of San Diego, CA, Tara Browner of Los Angeles, CA, Christina Baxter of Orange, CA, Karyn and Melinda Baxter of San Bernardino, CA and Melody Reed of Fallon, NV; grandniece, Gail Reed and great-grandnephews, Tom and Guy Reed of Corona, CA; grandnephews, Scott Baxter of Sacramento, CA and Gleen Reed of Fallon, NV and many relatives and friends.
Mr. Thomson was born January 11, 1913 in Santa Ana, CA spending his childhood there and graduating from Santa Ana High School. He served in the Armed Forces, first in the California National Guard, and later in the Army Air Corps, where he was a Gold Medalist in the 1934 Middle Weight Boxing Competition. During WWII, Mr. Thomson worked as an engineer for Douglas Air Craft in the Experimental Engine Development program. He was self employed from the early 1950's until his retirement. In recent years, Mr. Thomson had devoted his energies to the construction of a new senior citizen center in Benson, recently securing major grant funding for his endeavor. Velma and Frank were also accomplished ballroom dancers, active until well into their eighties.
Services are to be held at Richardson's Mortuary Chapel in Benson, AZ on Sunday, February 14, 1999. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to The Best of Friends Animal Sanctuary, Kanab, UT 84741-5001 or the American Cancer Society.
