SCHOU, Hans Helge, 87, died February13, 1999. He was born in Forde, Norway, educated at Michigan College of Mining and Technology and the University of Arizona as a Mining Engineer. Hans built airfields in the Pacific during World War II as a Lt. Colonel in the Corps of Engineers, US Army. He worked in mines in Spitzbergen, Norway, Bisbee, Colombia, Chile, Mexico and the USA. In retirement, Hans worked as a volunteer interpreter at UMC for many years. At the time of his death, Hans was a Director of Simpsons (Potters) Limited of England and Catalina China, Inc. of Tucson. He was also an Arizona Pathfinders Board Member. As a youth, Hans was a Nordic Skier and became an avid Alpine Skier at the age of 68. He skied until he was 85. Hans and his surviving wife of 59 years, Beatrice Tetreau Schou traveled extensively after retirement. In addition to Beatrice, he is survived by his three children, Dirck, Jeanne Lewis, and Rolf, as well as seven grandchildren: Donna, Dirck II, Timothy, Sean, Charlotte, Christian and Chellie, and one great-granddaughter, Chloe. All will greatly miss his incredible zest for living. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, February 17, at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 4th St.& Park. ALBRIGHT, Dorothy Griffith, 82, born June 11, 1916 in St. Louis, MO, died February 13, 1999 in Tucson. Dorothy lived in New Jersey for nine years and in California for 32 years, returning to Arizona in 1987. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Alan 'Bob' Albright. She is survived by two children, Alan and Judy; two grandchildren, Carin and Kirstie; brother, Richard of Arlington Heights, IL; sister, Betty of Indianapolis, IN. She was a resident of The Fountains, and had recently resumed her volunteer work at Northwest Hospital. At her request, no services will be held. BENSON, John Richard, died Wednesday, February 9, 1999. Born March 16, 1948, moved to Tucson in 1983. He was Hospital Administrator for Federal Bureau of Prisons, MCC Tucson, later employed by Coming Home in Tucson. Survived by his long term companion, James Weingart of Tucson. COOPER, Raymond T. G., born in Tucson, AZ on March 7, 1985, passed away on February 13, 1999. Survived by mother, Debra J. McQuiston and father, Raymond E. Kathryn Corke - Went to be with the Lord February 13, 1999, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Preceded in death by husband, Philip M. Corke. Kathryn came to Tucson from Sylacauga, Alabama in 1934 to marry P.M. Community activities include, Catalina Methodist Church, Tucson Academy of Pharmacy Auxiliary and American Field Service. Her gracious good humor was a blessing to all who knew her. She will be remembered for her unselfish caring for friends and family, and her gentle southern drawl. DeLONG, William J. (Bill), beloved and devoted husband of L. 'Sam'; dearly loved father of Robin, Lee, Jim, Bill, Linda and Peter; affectionate grandfather of Jennifer, Katharine, Jordan, Kyle, John and Meredith; adored nephew of Betty Tinkle; respected and caring uncle of Arlene Boyle and Ardith; and wise and loving friend of many hundreds, passed away on Monday, February 15th, after a valiant fight with cancer at the age of 68. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty Farinacci; and his first wife, Kay Riche.
Bill had a remarkable life, touching thousands of people with his warmth, kindness, humor and honesty. Born in Albany, N.Y., he joined the Army and served his country with great honor and distinction for 21 years, retiring at the rank of major. His distinguished career included tours of duty in both Korea and Viet Nam, for which he received the Legion of Merit, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Viet Nam Service Medal. Bill retired as a major in Tucson, where he started a successful career as a small business owner, and held different posts in both the Tucson and Pima County governments. In 1981, he was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives, and went on to serve eight years in the Senate. He was directly responsible for the formulation and passage of several important bills, including the Grandparents Bill of Right and the K-3 Enhancement Funding. He left politics in 1991 to work in the medical professional staffing field.
Bill was a tireless volunteer, giving freely of his time and experience to both civic and professional organizations, including the Optimist Club, the Boys Clubs of Tucson, Little League Baseball, the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council, and the Southern Arizona Mental Health Center.
Bill will be lovingly remembered, and terribly missed. His care and concern for others, his sense of duty and respect for discipline, his strength, wisdom and humor, his humility and his courage, in death as in life, will remain an inspiration for us all.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Davis-Monthan AFB Chapel #1; the burial follows at Ft. NEAL, Saralie (Sally) E., died at home January 21, 1999. She was born in Springfield, MO on May 13, 1922. She retired from teaching in TUSD in 1985.Sally is survived by her son, Gentry; nieces, Melanie and Melissa; grandniece, Sarah; grandnephew, Gabriel and a large number of friends. WALKER, Jean E., 80, died Monday, February 1, 1999 of lung cancer. Preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Frederick (Fritz) Walker. Survived by daughters, Linda Walker of Tucson and Gayle Sheldon (Bob) of DeLeon Springs, Florida; four grandchildren including Adrienne Walker of Tucson and seven great-grandchildren.
Jean was born in Portland, Oregon February 9, 1918, spent many years in California, where she and Fritz and Doug (Sun City) and Barbara Walker owned and operated the Walker Paint Co., a successful paint manufacturing company in Sunnyvale. She and her husband moved to Tucson in 1987.
Jean was an extremely intelligent and humorous person who loved to play cards and particularly enjoyed the friendships of her card-playing buddies. She'll be missed by those who loved her, but she's now released from her pain and is experiencing joy in the presence of God. No memorial service is planned at this time.
ADELAIDA ARTOLA ALLEN
'Yaya' 1900 – 1999
Adelaida Artola Allen was born in Mexico City, Mexico on December 16, 1900. Together with her family, she immigrated to the United States at a young age through Ellis Island and settled in New York. In the tradition of her father, she was an activist for human rights and as a young woman was a suffragette working for the right of women to vote. While working full time, she attended Brooklyn Law School and became a member of the New York Bar. She married Perry Allen a renown international attorney in 1924. Together, they moved the family to Mexico and began an international law practice assisting multi-national corporations. In order to honor her country of birth, Adelaida attended law school for the second time at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico' in Mexico City and became a member of the Mexican Bar. She became the first woman to practice law in Mexico. Many of Mexico's leading social and political thinkers of the time were her professors and friends including Jose Vasconcelos, Antonio and Alfonso Casso, Diego Rivera, Cosme Hinojosa, Ezequiel Padilla, and the Flores Magon brothers.
Together with her husband, they worked side by side until his death in 1958. She became Secretary of the Board of Directors and in-house counsel for the Texas-based, Pan American Sulfur Company until she retired from practicing law at the age of 75. Adelaida was a founding member of the University of the Americas in Mexico City and Puebla, the first bilingual institution of higher learning in the country. She was a founding member of the Pan American Round Table, an international organization dedicated to fostering international relations in the Americas, and a founding member of the Mexico City Garden Club. Further community activities included serving onthe board of the YWCA and the American Society of Mexico.
In her later years, Adelaida was the legal and business administrator for her son, Carlos Allen at Allen Coach Works, in Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. In 1990, Adelaida relocated to Tucson, AZ to reside with her daughter, Dr. Adela Artola Allen, Associate Dean of the Graduate College at the University of Arizona.
Recently, Yaya, as she was affectionately known to family and friends, was honored by the National Law Center for Inter-American Free Trade with a reception that featured her accomplishments together with Mexico's first female Supreme Court Justice, Olga Sanchez de Cordero.
Adelaida was preceded in death by her parents, Jose Artola Fontella and Refugio Arias de Artola; her siblings, Enriqueta Artola, Celia Artola de Fajardo, Susana Artola de Romero, and Jose Artola Arias. She died 41 years later to the date and hour of her beloved husband Perry. Also, preceding her in death were her sons, Perry Allen Jr., Carlos Allen and grandson, Rex Allen Applegate. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Adela Artola Allen; granddaughter, Lisha Adela Garcia and great-grandchildren, Carlos Mariano Garcia and Daniela Cristina Garcia, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Adelaida lived a rich and full life that left a treasury of memories marked by her generosity, passion for justice, integrity and unfailing loyalty. She was the consummate champion of lost causes. There will be a memorial mass in her honor on Saturday, February 20, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the Newman Center at the University of Arizona. Immediately following, there will be a celebration of her life at the home of her daughter. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to St. Luke's Home, a home for elder women, at 615 E. Adams, Tucson, AZ 85705.
