DONALD JOSEPH HOLMES, M.D. - The Michigan and Arizona noted psychiatrist died Friday, February 26 in Tucson, Arizona where he lived with his wife, Paula. Dr. Holmes received both his Bachelors' Degree and Medical Degree from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. He interned at the famed Philadelphia General Hospital where only a handful of residents were selected each year from hundreds of applicants. He did his psychiatric residency at the University of Michigan Neuropsychiatric Institute and received an M.Sc. in Psychiatry from the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
Dr. Holmes began his career as a professor at the University of Michigan Medical School. From 1964-74, he held several posts at the Neuropsychiatric Institute, University Hospital in Ann Arbor including chief of the adult service and executive assistant to the chair, Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Neuropsychiatric Institute.
Dr. Holmes was a consultant to the Arizona State Hospital Residency Program, the Arizona State University Student Health Service in Psychiatry and coordinator ofresidency training in psychiatry for the Maricopa County General Hospital in Phoenix. He was also a consultant to the La Frontera Center in Tucson and the Behavioral Health Agency of Central Arizona in Casa Grande. He served as Medical Director of the Verde Valley Community Guidance Clinic in Cottonwood from 1982-1987 and Medical Director of the combined Camelback and Marcus J. Lawrence Hospital detoxification and treatment program, the Sedona Villa. From 1989-1996, he was a staff psychiatrist with the Foundation of Mental Health, Northern Michigan Community Mental Health Center. From 1996 until his death, he was a psychiatric consultant to La Frontera Center in Tucson.
Dr. Holmes was a guest lecturer throughout the United States and Europe. His honors included Charter Fellow, American College of Psychiatry; Life Fellow, American Psychiatric Association; Alpha Omega Alpha, Medical Honorary Society; NY Academy of Sciences; and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
He was recognized around the country for his work with adolescents; and his ability to garner trust from those wary persons who were skeptical of psychiatrists. He made major contributions to all those whose lives he touched.
Dr. Holmes was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He was the author ofseveral publications and books, including 'Psychotherapy' and 'Adolescents in Psychotherapy'.
He is survived by his wife, Paula, a celebrated architect; son, Robb, a Juris Doctor in Tucson; and son, Todd, doctor of internal medicine in Pennsylvania.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Northwestern Tucson, 3601 W. Cromwell Drive. In lieu of flowers, any donations may be sent to La Frontera Center, 502 West 29th Street, Tucson.

Jenna Lynn Shumaker, age 10, was taken from us on February 27, 1999 as a result of a skiing accident in South Lake Tahoe, CA. She is survived by her parents, Jeff and Charlene Shumaker and her brother, Jeremy.
Jenna was a 5th grade student at Tanque Verde Elementary School. She has been described by her teacher and classmates as the 'heart' of their classroom, for to know Jenna was to experience her love and kindness. Her highest life priority was her family and friends.
