SCHERMERHORN, Ben H., 92, died March 18, 1999. Father of Ann (Craig) Stone; grandfather of Scott (Kristine) Schermerhorn Stone, Andrew Hubert Stone and Suzanne Cherie (Tim) Troutman; great-grandmother of Jacqueline Whitney Stone; uncle of John Willis Stillwell and Neil (Karen) Stillwell. Ben was born in 1907 in Hutchinson, Kansas. He and his family moved to Wichita in 1908 where Ben attended school at Lincoln Elementary, Alexander Hamilton Intermediate and Wichita High School where he was a member of the first class to graduate from Wichita High School East-Class of 1925.After high school, he attended Fairmount College from 1926-27. In 1932, Ben started his career in the lumber business in Amarillo, Texas with Panhandle Lumber Co. which is part of Houston Lumber Co. He married
Eleanor Brown in 1933 in Wichita. After a few years, Ben became the buyer for Houston Lumber Co. in 1942. In 1944 he and his family had moved to Portland, Oregon. Ben liked the looks of Tucson so well that in 1946 he moved his family hereat which time he bought property along the railroad tracks and started Lumber Distribution Inc. which became the largest distributor of lumber in Tucson. Shortly after starting LDI, he started Elgin Farms and in 1967, sold LDI and started Dor-Ways which he sold in 1977 and at that time, retired. A couple of years after his retirement, his wife Eleanor of 46 years passed away. In May of 1980, he married
Helen Beltroan who has preceded him in death. Ben came out of retirement in 1988 to assist with the day to day operations of Steel-Dor of Tucson. Ben was a member of the Southern Arizona Homebuilders Assoc., was appointed to the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Tribunal from 1958-79, member of Elks Lodge #385 and was on the Pima County Planning and Zoning Commission for 14 years. Ben owned many race winning thoroughbreds and quarter horses and was President from 1951-54 of Rillito Racetrack. In his later years, Ben returned to Elgin and oversaw the design and construction of Rancho Costa Plente and served as its foreman until his death. SCULLY, William Rodlend, 77, died March 19, 1999. BLEDSOE, A.E. (Ed), 72, of Tucson, died March 21, 1999. He was born in Plainview, TX, March 27, 1927. NORMAN ELSTEN, 71, passed away March 13, 1999. preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Roland) Estrada, Debbie (Robert) Cain and sons, Bill Robert and Brian Elsten; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. GOODMAN, Laird Collins, 72, the 1943 Minnesota State High School Cross-Country Champion, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at his home in Tucson, Arizona.
He was the first person to win this prestigious state running event, and was trained under the legendary coach, John Swain.
Laird was born August 22, 1926 to A. Laird and Cordelia Goodman, and lived most of his life in Duluth, Minnesota. He graduated from Duluth Central H.S. and received his bachelors and masters degree from the University of Minnesota.
He was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman. Laird was a Duluth city tennis champion and also enjoyed golf, fishing, cross-country skinning, hiking and camping.
Laird was a U.S. Army veteran and later worked for Upjohn Pharmaceuticals in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, CIBA Pharmaceuticals in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the W.P. &R.S. Mars Company in Duluth and as an occupational health and safety engineer for the State of Arizona in Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 47 years, Joan; daughter, Cynthia (Steven) Shaw of Tucson, Arizona; sons, Allen (Karla) Goodman of Palm Harbor, Florida, Laird (Pamela) Goodman of Portland, Oregon, Brian (Mueni) Goodman of Tucson, Arizona, Gregory Goodman of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren, Jennifer, Sarah, Drake and Carter; sisters, Cordelia (David) Johnson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Barbara Vlaming of Edina, Minnesota, Cynthia (Richard) Coolidge of Tucson, Arizona and many nieces and nephews.

George Makowski passed away early Sunday morning. George moved from Chicago, Illinois to Tucson in 1952. George was the loving husband of Joan; father of Joan Marie Makowski, Jerry (Marlaine) Makowski, Debbie (Tom) McNally; grandfather of Gina, Michelle, Clint, Craig, Chelsea, Justin and Lisa; great-grandfather of Amanda Brook and Casie; brother of Ted and Helena. JOHN A. MCLEOD III - John, or Sandy as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin April 13, 1924 to Marie Goodrich McLeod and John Alexander McLeod, Jr. John died Saturday, March 20, 1999 after a brief illness. His family purchased the Bar LY ranch in the Rincon Mountains and relocated to Arizona in 1933. Sandy was a graduate of Tucson High School in 1942. He served in the Air Transport Command during WWII and was a B-24 crew chief. Following the war he married
Loretta Graydon in 1946 and continued his education. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from the University of Arizona in 1950. Following his graduation he was herdsman for the University of Arizona farms.
He left the agricultural field in 1956 joined Hollis Digital Imaging, founded by his brother-in-law Charles Hollis. The McLeod family bought the business in 1973. The firm has been and continues to be a leader in the Southern Arizona pre-press industry. Sandy was active in the Tucson Ad Club, where he served in various capacities including President. He was also affiliated with the Tucson Lithography Association and various other national organizations in the printing and pre-press industries. He is survived by his wife Loretta and two sons, Bruce and John with his wife, Joan, and grandchildren, Scott and Courtney.
A Memorial Service will be held at St Philip's in the Hills, Wednesday, March 24, at 11:00 a.m. Contributions, instead of flowers, may be given to Easter Seals, St Philip's in the Hills in memory of John A. McLeod or a charity of your choice.
PETERSEN, Lila L., a Tucson resident for the past 13 years passed away March 21, 1999. Lila was born in Elk Creek, Nebraska on November 10, 1929. After graduating with a teaching degree from Kearney State, she taught primary school in Wyoming and Nebraska before embarking on a life overseas, for 30 continuous years. She lived in Guatemala City for six years where three of her four children were born and then moved to Brisbane, Australia, for eight years where her fourth child was born. Followed by six years in Dublin, Ireland and 10 years in London, England before retiring with her husband to Tucson in 1986. Lila was very active and served on numerous school committees in the communities that she lived. Locally active with the church school at St. Albans, the Tucson Republican Women Club and especially the Tucson Symphony Treasure Shop.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Wallace A. Petersen; her four children, Sydnee, Steven and Scott of Tucson and John from Denver; two grandchildren and three sisters in Nebraska. She was preceded in death by one brother and sister. Also survived by many, many life long friends. She was a wonderful, caring, fun loving wife, mother, mother-in-law and friend. She will be remembered for her laugh and her giving nature and wonderful sense of humor.

SEBALLOS, Agustina M., 83, of Tucson, passed away March 19, 1999. preceded in death by husband, Jacinto Marquez Seballos. Survived by daughters, Delfina (Edward) Seballos Jackson, Pauline (Rob) Seballos Hilkin; sons, Isabel Jacinto Seballos, Santos Madrid Seballos. Also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. TRETSCHOK, Hilda, born April 23, 1911, and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Hilda came to Tucson with her husband, Carl E. Tretschok, Sr. in 1947. She worked with Carl first in Pittsburgh in their Electrical Contracting business and later in Tucson where they operated as Tretschok Construction for many years. Carl and Hilda were married
68 years before his death in 1997.
After their 'retirement' from the contracting business she worked as a volunteer with the Pima County Senior Volunteers for 10 years working at a nursing home. She also designed and produced jewelry, working with Carl at Lightning Silversmiths. She became a certified Ceramics Instructor and was a member of the Desert Mountain View Ceramics group. She was best known for her version of our desert quail, crating ceramic quail up until just days before her death. In her spare time she bowled on many teams over 40 years and at age 86 she still managed a 143 average.
Hilda was involved in many clubs and organizations. Prior to arriving in Tucson, she was very active in the Eastern Star, and became a Worthy Matron in 1946. In Tucson she joined the Ladies Oriental Shrine and was elected to the office of High Priestess in 1973. She remained active after the completion of her term and continued to be involved in the organization up to a few days prior to her death. Hilda was also active in a group known as True Kindred where she served several years as Treasurer. Both she and Carl were members of the Social Order of the Beauceant for many years.
Hilda's death on March 21, 1999 will impact those she worked with, those she socialized with and played with. She was an energetic, outgoing dynamic 87 year old and her two sons, Carl and Dale along with their wives, Dorris and Diane and her five grandchildren, Tiffany, Cody, Eden, Tully and Trent will miss her advice and unconquerable spirit. Everyone who knew and loved her will keep that spirit alive in their hearts.
Visitation will be at Adair Funeral Home, 1050 N. Dodge from 6:00 p.m. through 8:00 p.m. on March 23, 1999.
