BOYLE, Peter J., 55, passed away suddenly on Monday, March 22, 1999. 'Pete' was born on August 26, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a B.S. degree in History and earned a second B.S. degree in Geology from San Francisco State University. A veteran of the US Air Force, Pete served honorably in the Strategic Air Command from 1962 to 1966. He moved to Tucson with his wife, Caren Deming and joined the staff of the University of Arizona as Mechanical Shop Supervisor, Department of Civil Engineering in 1986.Peter leaves his loving wife of 32 years, Caren; a brother, Cecil F. Boyle of Chicago, IL; sisters, Barbara McLachlan of San Diego, CA and Margaret Roebuck of Melbourne, FL; 12 nieces and nephews and dozens of lifelong friends. The family would appreciate remembrances to the Arizona Media Arts Center or the Arizona International Film Festival, c/o. Dept of Media Arts, University of Arizona. Private services will be held. BYRD, Dian (Attie Bryant Nall), 91, passed March 22, 1999. Beloved mother of Joseph Hunter Byrd (Beni Bennett), Abraham Ruddell Byrd III (Gayle Reay), and her third son, Norman Celaya; grandmother of Clarissa Elizabeth Byrd and Bram Byrd; great-grandmother of Cory and Ryan Schimer; and adoptive grandmother to Amanda McCarley and the whole wonderful Celaya family. She is survived also by her brother, Allen Taylor Nall, 93, of Calhoun, Kentucky, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Her courage, loyalty and grace, and her indomitable and independent spirit will continue to inspire us. She is not gone as she has given the measure of this beautiful spirit to all who knew her, and she will remain with us forever. Private interment will be at South Lawn; memorial service will be held Saturday, March 27at 3:00 p.m. at First Christian Church, 740 E. Speedway.

ERICKSON, Edward 'Red' died March 20, 1999 in a Tucson hospital after an extended illness. Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Betty; son, Ronald Edward Erickson; daughter, Jane Ellen Willers; six grandchildren; brother, Harold and sister, Doris. Ed retired from Northwest Bell in Minnesota and moved to Rio Rico in 1987. While in Santa Cruz County, Ed was active in the Arizona Rangers and St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where he served as Jr. Warden for several years. Ed also served as a volunteer for the St. Andrew's Crippled Children's Clinic.
Services will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 969 W. Country Club Dr., Nogales on Thursday, March 25, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. Ashes will be interred at the St. Andrew's Columbarium.

SHACKELFORD, Scott, 83, of Tucson, died Sunday, March 21, 1999. Born on January 16, 1916. Scott was a professional accountant. A veteran of World War II, he retired from the US Army in 1965. He later retired from the Military Storage and Disposition Center at Davis-Monthan AFB as chief of the cost accounting section. Scott had no immediate relation. SOPER, William E. 'Bill' 80 years old, died March 22, 1999 at home, as he wished. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Laverne; his daughter, Margaret (Robert 'Bob') Brooks; son, Dusty (Kathleen) Davison of Los Angeles, CA; grandson, Bill (Lynn) Brooks; granddaughter, Dana (Keith) Barnes; great-grandchildren, Aidan Barnes; great-granddaughter, Alyssa Brooks; a sister, Florence Dixon of Phoenix, AZ and a nephew, Everette Putney of El Paso, TX. Bill was born in Hastings, Neb., but moved with his family to Phoenix in 1927, a 72 year Arizonan. After graduating from high school he went to work for Bechtel Co. in Los Angeles, CA and from there he worked many years in Saudi Arabia and Africa during World War II. He continued his Construction Engineering after the war with the Corps of Engineers in Virginia, he then transferred to Tucson to work as a project manager on the missile sites. In later years he went to work with the construction section of the Postal Service as Project Manager for certain new post offices in Tucson. Bill led a long and eventful life during his 'construction' years. Besides work he became an avid golfer, before and after retirement. He eventually lost a long and courageous battle with severe emphysema and left us and the desert he so greatly loved. Graveside services will be at East Lawn cemetery, 5801 E. Lawrence W. Cross, 91, of Tucson, passed away March 23, 1999. A long-time educator with Amphitheater District, he came to Tucson with his family in 1949. He was born in Kingfield, Maine, September 4, 1907. Cross began his career in public education in Iowa before WWII. During the war, he served his country with great pride as a U.S. Navy Lieutenant. He became principal of Amphitheater High in 1951. During the next 23 years, Cross served as principal, assistant superintendent and acting superintendent for the district. Amphitheater recognized his years of outstanding service in 1973, naming the L.W. Cross Middle School in his honor. Before and after his retirement in 1974, Cross devoted countless hours to youth activities, education and veterans' affairs in the Tucson area. He was appointed to the Arizona Retirement Systems Board, serving three years as chairman. He was active in the American Legion, Boys State, and was a charter member of the Exchange Club of North Tucson. He was an avid golfer, bridge player and a very accomplished fisherman. A devoted father and husband, his wife of 57 years, Minnie, passed away in 1989. Mr. Cross is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ardith and George Grady; by his grandchildren, Debbie Kontess and Philip Grady; and by his great grandsons, Alex, Danny, Joe, and Chris.
