CHARLES, Herman, 75, of Tucson, passed away Monday, April 5, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Faye; sons, Timothy and Joey; daughters, Teresa, Leslie, Lucinne, Roxane, Della, Pixie, Cindy, Missy and Vicki; 25 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Herman was a WWII veteran and was a member of the DAV Post #28 and the VFW Post #10015 and the Moose Lodge #1964. CHEEVER, Edith Elsie, 92, died April 5, 1999. preceded in death by her husband, R.E. Cheever and two sons, Roland and Kay Don. Survived by sons, Bob (Lyn) and Theo (Dorothy) Cheever; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. JOHN PETER HAGER
'HOMEWARD BOUND'
Born March 31, 1921 in Michigamme, Michigan to George Andrew Hager and Muriel Christenson, then raised by Muriel's parents (Peter and Jesine Christenson) at her untimely death, John Peter Hager passed away at his Tucson, AZ home April 4, 1999; age 78 years. After graduating high school, the Michigamme basketball star enlisted in the U.S. Navy like his father before him. He met his loving wife, Georgianna, at a roadside restaurant where she waitressed. They were married
March 21, 1941. Their honeymoon was cut short by the outbreak of WWII. John served in the Pacific Arena attached as a Corpsman the 1st Marine Division, 5th Marine Regiment at Guadalcanal and other combat areas at Battalion Aid Stations. In 1943 he became Submariner following graduation from submarine school at New London, Connecticut, where he finished 2nd out of a class of 86. John served on the U.S.S. Icefish which completed five war patrols. He also served on the U.S.S. Redfish (1949-1952) and the U.S.S. Blackfire. The navy transferred John and his growing family all over the country in his 20 years of service, including Hancock, MI; Denver, CO; San Diego, CA; Pearl City, HI; and finally Port Townsend, WA. He retired from the Navy in 1959, but after a short stint as a Real Estate and Insurance Salesman, John returned to the the seas once again; this time as a Purser for the Merchant Marines for the U.S. Mail Lines and the American President Line. Staying mainly in the Pacific over the next 20 years, he also served as the ship's doctor. He retired for good in 1983, splitting his time between homes in Tucson, Arizona and summer in Bellingham, Washington. He leaves behind his wife, Georgianna Marie Wermke Hager of Tucson, Arizona; his brother, George Wallace Hager of Marquette, Michigan; half sister, Helen Jean Hager Harrison of Grand Rapids, Michigan; four sons, Guy Wallace Hager and wife, Anne Bayless of Ellicott City, Maryland, John Peter Hager II and wife, Donna Ferngren of Mill Creek, Washington, Steven Randolph Hager and wife, Jacqueline McGraw of Bellingham, Washington and William Ernest Hager and wife, Jeanne LaClair also of Bellingham, Washington; and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts. ILIFF, Walter R., 71, of Tucson, died April 2, 1999. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl, Robert, Elmer; and sisters, Ruby and Edith. He is survived by wife, Marilyn and brothers, Bernard Iliff of Hebron, IL, Clyde Iliff of Lowell, IN; and many friends. Robert Henry Jones, 68, born July 22, 1930 in Hamilton, Ohio, passed away Easter Sunday, April 4, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Glenna Stephens Jones; oldest son, Stephen, son, Gregory; and daughter, Valerie; seven grandchildren as well as seven brothers and sisters. Prior to his retirement four years ago, he was Vice President of Marketing for Tucsonix here in Tucson. (Bob) was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He was a US Navy veteran. MACON, Charles Ray 'Chuck' 78, died March 31, 1999. Father of Mike Macon; grandfather of Lucas and Darby; brother of Lois Ford; uncle of Susan Graham; great uncle of Stephanie. MILLER, Robert G. L., 85, of Sonoita and Tucson, died Saturday, April 3, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Christine; four children; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Miller graduated from Mercersburg Academy and attended Lehigh University, both in Pennsylvania. Services and burial will be in Hamburg, Pennsylvania. ORTIZ, Barbara 'Chaguita' age 87, went to be with our Lord April 3rd, 1999. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona on December 4th, 1911. Survived by daughters, Amelia (Roy) Ortiz, Margaret (Gilbert) Robles, Elidia (Gerardo) Alcaraz and Angie Espinoza; sons, Frank, Ruben, Reginaldo (Carmen), Abelardo (Genevieve) Ortiz; 11 grandchildren and17 great-grandchildren; brother, Lamberto Garcia of Mexico; and many nieces and nephews. POLING, SR., Orris London, 90, of Tucson, passed away Monday, April 5, 1999. His wife preceded him in death December 4, 1993. He was born in Montrose, West Virginia, December 25, 1908. He is survived by his children, Almeta (John) Sheley, Setina Spencer, Ronald (Susan) Poling and Orris L. (Darlene) Poling, Jr. There are nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Step grandchildren are Cynthia Thompson, Diane Prussner and Mark Sheley. Mr. Poling's initial work was as a carpenter. But most importantly was his many, many years as a gospel singer with his family, in West Virginia, Indiana, California and Arizona. Interment was at South Lawn. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 8 at Tanque Verde Baptist Church, 2200 N. Tanque Verde Loop Road at 7:00 p.m., Rev. John G. Sheley, Sr.officiating. ALFREDO A. RIVERA passed peacefully at his home on Friday, April 2, surrounded by his family.
Through the creativity of his art and the creativity of his concern for others, his departure left a big hole in the lives of many, many members of his family and among his many friends. Alfredo was a gifted artist who did not promote himself; he was constantly creating; creating designs in glass and sculpture assemblages of found objects. Louise Nevelson was his heroine and her works were a point of departure for him.His works are in private homes from Tucson to Mexico City to Washington, D.C. His major public works are at the Heart Hospital Chapel in Tucson and the clock tower of the city hall of Nogales, Sonora.
He is survived by his parents, Merced and Maria Rivera; four sisters, Jane, Rita, Marianne and Toni; and numerous nieces, nephews, a large extended family, and Carlos Nagel, his companion since 1978.
He was a key element in the Tucson Botanical Garden's art exhibit auctions, he was a member and two term president of Dignity Tucson, a member of TAP, a contributor to Friends of PRONATURA, a coordinator of many exhibits, a co-sponsor of several students from Mexico and a constant and good friend.
The Alfredo Rivera Art Scholarship fund is established for art students in the medium of glass who focus on environmental and conservation art. His family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, deductible contributions for this scholarship be made to Friends of PRONATURA, 240 East Limberlost, Tucson, AZ 85705.

SMITH, Raymond, 77, of Tucson, died April 4, 1999. He was born and raised in New Jersey, and served with the Flying Tigers, USAF. ILSE ELLEN SPIRA
Born February 10, 1911. She lived in Denmark, France, Austria, Italy and the United States. She grew up in Denmark and moved to Paris at an early age. She came to the United States in 1951 and became a citizen in 1957. After living in Florida and New Hampshire, she moved to Phoenix and then to Tucson in 1965. She retired as an appliance manager from K-Mart.
She will be greatly missed.
AROS, Alice nee Robles, 86, loving mother and grandmother and native of Tucson, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene J. Aros; parents, Frank and Pauline Robles; and sister, Delia Huckins. She will be greatly missed by her entire family, including her brother, George K. Robles; sister, Elma Conrad; children, Gloria Aros Rodriguez, William 'Billy' Aros, Robert 'Bobby' Aros; granddaughters, Tricia (Ernesto) Quiroz, Margaret (Robert) Taylor; great-grandsons, Lorenzo and Esteban Quiroz; and numerous nieces and nephews including Gilbert Aguirre, Gilda (Louis) Pellon, Barbara Aguilera and Frances Huckins. Her life was dedicated to giving to others unconditionally. CLIFFORD, Richard C., 71, died April 2, 1999. Father of Stephen (Jill) Clifford of Mesa, AZ and Michael Clifford of Texas; grandfather of Edward, Dennis (Misti) and Wyatt; great-grandfather of Kendrah Denae; cousin of Gene Cranston Anderson; uncle of Ron Hogan and Edi Blunck. Mr. Clifford was in WWII serving with the Army Occupational Services in Japan and later was a Military Police Officer in the Air Force. He was also an alumni of the U of A graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in psychology. He was a member of the D.A.V., V.F.W. and American Legion. FRIEND, Peggy, passed away on March 30, 1999. Born in Junction City, Kansas on May 24, 1928, she is survived by her loving twin sister, Betty Friend; devoted companion, Celeste Hopkins, both of Tucson; brother, John (June) Friend of Nortonville, Kansas; nephews, Pat (Pia) Friend, Jim (Susan) Friend, John (Diana) Friend and Bill Friend; four great nieces and three great nephews; half-sister and brother Maureen and Gerald Friend of Canada. Peggy had a lengthy career in the life insurance field, including companies in Denver, Colorado; Anchorage, Alaska; and Cerritos, California. She was a past Director of ZONTA International and had served on the Executive Board of the W.I.B.C. (Women's International Bowling Congress). She also was on the Board of Directors at Water of Life MCC until her health made further service impossible. After retiring as Vice-President of the National American Life Insurance Co. in Cerritos, Peggy moved to Tucson in 1992, as she loved Arizona and wanted to be near Betty. She was an avid sports fan as well as an all-around athlete; we were so proud when she was named All-American First Baseman at the ASA National Softball Tournament in Orange, California. As a senior citizen she participated in golf and bowling, and received medals in Senior Olympics bowling competition as well as city and state awards for bowling. Peggy was loved and admired by all who knew her, and will be forever remembered for living up to the name of Friend.
