EDWIN F. HUDGEL, 83, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at 8:05 p.m. at Tucson Medical Center following complications from heart surgery and surrounded by his loving family. Born in Anthon, Iowa on September 8, 1915 and graduated from the Hohenschuh-Carpenter College of Embalming in 1936, he followed his father's footsteps in the funeral profession by joining the family business, Hudgel's Funeral Home, Anthon, Iowa, in conjunction with a furniture store, a common practice during that era. Wishing for a change in life for himself and his family, he left Iowa in August 1959 to begin a new challenge in Arizona. After two years in the furniture business here in Tucson, he realized that the funeral business was his true life's work and bought the Willcox Funeral Home, Willcox, AZ in 1962. In May 1964 he built and opened Hudgel's Swan Funeral Home. In his struggle to survive with the long established funeral homes in Tucson, he became known as a rebel in the business by advertising price and offering free ambulance service. His beliefs, that emotional overspending is not a symbol of devotion, and finer funerals need not be costly, became his slogans. He was scorned yet respected by his competitors, Art, Chris, Howard, and Leo, all who preceded him in death. Today the business he started from scratch in 1964 now provides service to 500 families a year, as his sons, Warren and Brian, proudly carry on his work. Although he became semi-retired, he still came to his funeral home every day, 365 days a year up until the very end. His main hobby, besides gardening and delighting in his grandchildren, was playing the stock market, knowledgeably and successfully. He leaves behind his wife and companion of sixty years, Esther; his children, Sheila (Bob) Riach, Cynthia Johnoff, Regina (Richard) Nast, Warren (Donna) Hudgel, Rhonda Hudgel, Brian (Linda) Hudgel, Melinda (Bob) Lebsack; his grandchildren, Kevin and Ryan Riach, Christopher and Andrew Nast, Brandon and Tyson Hudgel, Breanna and Wesley Lebsack; his sisters, Susan Mack, Edith Moore, Herma Cummings, and Marjorie Lloyd. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Church, 215 S. Craycroft. Interment will follow at East Lawn cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Salvation Army.

KLUNE, Kenneth James, 65, died May 5, 1999. Loving brother of Donald Klune of Patchogue, NY. He was a retired Air Force Sergeant and also retired as Department Manager at K-Mart. Memorial Service 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 7th at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.
